As a retired dental technician of 42 years and mixing plaster of Paris every day may I offer a couple of tips. Firstly add plaster to a bowl of water rather than water to plaster. Slowly sprinkle in so the water soakes up the powder.. you get a smoother mix. Secondly after you have mixed your plaster pour it into a container with an airtight lid and give it a good shake. This gets rid of a lot of air bubbles. We used this method when our vacuum mixing machine was not working. Lastly if you could use dental stone rather than plaster of Paris you will find your castings much improved. My choise would be a good quality die stone used in crown and bridge work but it could be a little expensive for a small project. One last thing. When we used to cast into silicon moulds we always had a container of diluted washing up liquid on hand which we dunked the mould into and then washed away under the cold water tap. This helped the plaster mix get into all the mould detail and as you pour into the mould, gently tap the mould on the table as you do it. Hope this helps.
I played this back in the 80s with my best friend! It was his Dad's from back in the day. Good times!!! This is some deep nerdery right here boys and girls. This game is pretty obscure. Awesome video by the way dude! 12:26
Man, I used to play this all the time as a little kid. I think despite my dozens of games, I may have played one or two with the actual rules of the game. ...to be a kid again.
Your reimagining here really gives this game the visual fidelity it deserves. I picked up a copy of the bookshelf game box version a couple weeks ago and played it the other day, in a 2v2 match. It was honestly refreshing with its chess-like simplicity--pieces don't have powers, there are no dice or cards, etc. that a more modern board game might have. Not that I dislike modern games, but it's really refreshing to have something that is quite simple to play while having a lot of strategic depth. For a game I'd never heard of before seeing it on the local game store's used games shelf, it holds up really well!
It really is a great game. Something you can teach in less than 5 minutes but the games could last longer than an hour while you stress over every move your opponent could make. I still need to make 2 more factions so I can play a 3v3 or 6 person Free for All.
OMG! Had just told my friend at work about this game today and dug out my original copy of it that I have had since probably 1971 to show him. So of course I had to go looking to see who had videos on it, but what you have done for it is AMAZING! Truly a great work of craftsmanship! Would love to see this board in action.. and yes... you could get a LOT of people playing this game again with a board and custom miniatures like that! It was, and I am sure still is, a TON of FUN to play. Thanks for doing this and showcasing an absolute gem of a game and giving it a fantastic makeover!
That's awesome. I am the only person in my personal life that has this game or knows anything about it. I've only gotten friends to play it once in my life. I was just doing a general search online to see if a company had released an updated version at any point, and I found your video. The characters are really amazing. The board was a little sketch with the staining (you should have test stained a random piece of wood first) , but I was massively impressed that you got all those cuts just right! That is award worthy in my book! I think that after I saw the intense effort and detail that you put into the troops that the board and castles would have been done up with just as much intricate detail in sculpting and painting. In the end though it was a heck of an undertaking and it is a Huge update from the original pegboard. You definitely have a lot of talent with character building. Thanks for sharing this.
I was considering it but thought it would be weird or confusing to make a how to play video with my board looking so different from the original game. I may do a gameplay or battle report in the future.
take all of my money, I want to spend my entire paycheck on this! These look amazing you should be so proud of what you made! Keep up the fantastic work man
Oh my!!! I still have this game in the game room, somewhere...
Great Call!!!

Very nice! How about modernizing the Royal Game of Ur? That one is REALLY an oldie! 😋
Hah yes it is. I will have to go down to my Friendly Local Egyptian Tomb and pick up a copy first.
