I own a 1980 R65. Original owner. Managed unfortunately to put in only 13k as Portland Oregon does not give one much opportunity to ride motorcycle. Just a lame excuse actually. At 76 years old, I am now debating whether to part ways with this old and faithful friend. It has windjammer fairings and BMW saddlebags.
Don't do it! I bought my 78 R100/7 when I was 76 (now I'm 78) after going through a multitude of other bikes. I wish I had bought one years ago. Keep it and ride it!
Let me join the circle: Do not sell the R 65! I myself am driving a 1980 R45 (1st 248 series) which I could purchase in 2010 with 9300 kms only. The bike still gives me pleasure and will accompany me at least until I'm 80 years old. Keep on rolling!
78 here and loved the R65 I had. Still actively ride. Everyone is different but I'd remove the Windjammer. Easier to see, lighter weight, looks better, and after riding multiple bare bikes, it's more fun unless doing a lot of freeway riding at 65mph plus.
Enjoyed your video. I have a 1983 R65 I plan on riding again soon. Recently retired so I have more time. Always enjoyed the way these bikes handled and plenty enough power for me. A real classic. By the way, where did you get the luggage rack/backrest? Was this a factory item?
Thank you! That’s awesome. The BMW airheads are very nice and reliable and I agree, they handle very nicely. As for the backrest it was already installed on the bike by the guy I bought it from. I’m not sure where to buy them. Sorry about that.

My dad is almost 70 and he still rides his 83. Please don't sell it.
I agree, definitely worth keeping.
