  • A blow to the back of the head can be serious enough that it isn't even allowed in MMA. After Mo Wagner was knocked out from this blow to the back of his head, let's discuss why this can be such a serious thing.

People who think Mo is weak for getting knocked out by that are beyond me. Any hit to the head can knock you out if it hits you in the right spot, same way your leg can give out when you get hit on the perennial nerve. Hope this doesn’t leave lasting effects, great video

Beyond you? It’s actually quite easy to understand: people who think he’s weak for getting knocked out literally have no clue about anything. No clue about the human body, no clue about fighting, no clue about contact sports.

People who say this have most likely never been punched, never mind been hit in the back of the head. A punch to the back of the head, that you have no idea is coming is terrifying.

No disrespect, but as a person who has played a LOT of basketball, what MO Wagner did was not a basketball play AT ALL. It is very dangerous to redirect someone into solid objects when they are in a sprint. Luckily for Killian, he didn't impact anything at full speed or hit the wrong objects. It could've caused him to miss the season, or worst case, be career ending. I don't agree with the melee, but I understand the reaction to a very dirty play. Players know the consequences of those types of plays, so when you CHOOSE to engage in that, be ready for the response.

Tell the man stop with his CONSTANT DIRTY PLAYS. It’s only a matter of time before someone acts irresponsibly because of Wagners actions. I mean the man has A LOT of dirty plays. Same thing with Smart, Allen and a lot others. He could’ve injured Hayes with that dumb move because he lost the ball. Idk. I barely see Moes younger brother even remotely getting involved in Moes stunts. Idk though.

As a person who has had concussions from both front and rear impact injuries to my skull, I recovered easily from the front impacts, while the single time I was knocked unconscious by a rear impact I was unable to do anything but lay on the couch for two weeks with the worst piercing migraines I’ve ever experienced

    • Ryan Trudell
      Ryan Trudell 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

Dude, same. Almost exactly the same. Front impact concussion in 2013, was right as rain within a few days. Took an accidental rear-impact kick to my head during MMA training in 2021, and it was about a 3-4 months recovery process, with a lingering effects.

    • Brqxton
      Brqxton 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Ryan Trudell mine wasn't as bad as that, likely due to severity of injury. But yeah there's just something about rear skull impact injuries that our bodies just cannot handle as well

    • Morales Corner
      Morales Corner 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Brqxton if you touch the back of your head you can see there's a softer spot where your brain and top of your spine are not really very protected by bones and muscle tissue. It's scary to think how easy it is to cause damage in that area. I'm happy both of you are okay because the recovery process from those blows sounds scary too.

    • Big Papi
      Big Papi 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

@Morales Corner it’s also incredibly dangerous because of the brain stem. It wasn’t uncommon, when rabbit punches were still legal in boxing, to see boxers brain stems get split, or even detached altogether, which would kill the boxers before they had time to be taken out of the ring

    • Ty
      Ty 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Both players are cowards imo. That was hella dirty by Wagner. IMO someone throwing a 6’5 215 pound dude into a fan that’s like 5’8 is just as bad.

    • Bill Somebody
      Bill Somebody 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +4

@Ty the push Wagner did is definitely what instigated the rabbit punch, but players need to be informed about the serious danger of a punch to the back of someone's head. Wagner got the suspension/fee as well, and rightfully so. But again players need to be aware of the full outcome of a rabbit punch. More than their career can be ended. Unfortunately quite a large amount still have trouble handling impulse and emotions, especially at a young age when those hormones are still flying everywhere.

Three of my four concussions were hits to the back of my head, and let me tell you they are very, very serious. my last one was a seriously close call as I hit that bump on the back of the head with the full force of my body weight onto the edge of a solid wood chair (a woman moved my chair to go to the bathroom), so when I went to sit, chair wasn't where my butt was, but rather the back of my head. It was a delayed concussion and I remember about 5-10 minutes after, then being completely lifeless but hearing myself throwing up and my sister and her boyfriend carrying my limp body. I'm very lucky and thankful to still be alive after that last one.

I was watching this game live. Looked like Moe was out for 20-30 seconds and was surrounded by Detroit players. Was a bit scary for a bit. However, even most Detroit teammates were covering him up as the pile around him was chaotic.
I have no idea what Hayes was thinking. He'll likely be suspended for at least a few games you'd think. I get Moe's foul was unnecessary, but Hayes and Diallo just lost their mind. I guess that's what Moe's antics do to people.
As a Magic fan, that was one of the worst games in general I've seen in a while. Detroit did to Orlando what Orlando just did to Boston. They took over the game early, and Orlando was just frustratingly trying to get back in the game with no success. After that incident, the game was called super tight, and basically it just drug on forever.
Glad it's over. Orlando's got a lot of development and team management to do. They'll live to fight another day.

“I have no idea what Hayes was thinking.”
My initial impression was that he was obviously upset after the push, but he stumbles into the bench and so he didn’t see Diallo push Wagner into Stewart. To me, it looks like Hayes thinks Wagner’s getting into it with Stewart, so Hayes goes after Mo, too, even though Stewart’s just holding Mo up at that point.

I am shocked that so many people didn't know this was a thing and were making jokes and being very light about it. I live in Australia and grew up hearing horror stories from my family and friends and on the news about people who go out, get drunk, get into an altercation and get hit in the back of the head and never go home. Fairly certain we even have laws about it, I didn't realize so many people were so ignorant about how dangerous it is.

Dr. Sutterer, something that stood out to me and I was hoping you mentioned it and would love to hear your analysis. It seems to me like Wagner was already compromised before the hit. He seems dazed or sort of 'out of it's before the blow. He just seemed... odd with the way he was standing there and being held up which if true, seems to me to make him more susceptible to the hit Hayes delivered.
Just a thought! Wish there was another video angle that showed his face before the blow.

Didn't realize the importance of that area, thanks for sharing! Guess it kind of helps explain the death of Dale Earhart in what seemed like a simple collision with the wall, it was the whiplash effect and what it caused to happen.

It was not a simple collision into the wall. At those speeds, even what seem like impact the wall at “benign” angles still delivers the a tremendous amount of violent force to the car. And without today’s safety devices for drivers, Ernhardt didn’t have a chance

    • Tommy Chew
      Tommy Chew 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

@Ryan Trudell I should have said seemed like a sliding slow speed impact with the wall, admittedly. In my years of watching racing since the 70's I've seen much harder impacts not have the same outcome. Dale was my dad's favorite driver, he would argue with anyone over Dale's way of driving that many didn't like. I have nothing but fond memories of him arguing with my aunts and uncles over who the best driver was.

In 1984, my brother was killd by a blow to the back of the head when his motorcycle helmet rocked back after a face first collision with a pickup truck abruptly turning into his path. Second only to the side of the head, I think the back of the head is the most vulnerable part of the head. I think even boxing has rules against hitting somebody in the back of the head: "no rabbit punches".

If you really look at it when Diallo hit him initially it looked like he hit his spine. Wagner was already limp when Hayes followed it up by pressing on the same spot before he clubbed him with his forearm to the back of the head. I won't be surprised if he's out for a back issue as well, maybe compress nerve or bruised bone or ribs. Any thoughts or am I tripping?

Back in 2004, I was assaulted in college and hit in the back of my head with a fire extinguisher in nearly the very same place spot. I was sitting down at my desk, typing on my computer and never seen the attack coming. Everything this doctor stated in this video is factual.

@underground unlimited sure. My roommate at the time assumed I didn't like her. I was mostly into my schooling and not into the in-crowd. And this was during a weird time here in TX when there was this whole Dallas vs Fort Worth madness. Well, they found out I was from Fort Worth and it was pure hell, daily. To be fair, my roommate did tell me she was going to beat my tail yo the point she would kill me but me just being someone who stayed to themselves, I payed it no mind. The way our apartment was set up, my back faced the front door so I never seen the assault coming. I can only recall her telling me moments before, "B, you will die today" but the front door never closed. I was on the phone with my Grandmother the entire time leading to the assault. All I can recall is that I woke up in the hospital. The team of doctors said I had a fracture to my spine as a result of being hit with a fire extinguisher. I had two black eyes. A concussion. It was a total mess to say the least.

Doc I think another reason why this scenario is so dangerous is that Wagner can't see the punch coming. Therefore his neck muscles are not contracted and his brain is shaken around more. This increases the risk for a concussion or even cerebral hemorrhage

  • Jake Stine

I took a punch like that in high school. Twice. Both times my vision went black except for little dots in the center. The first time, I had a stiff neck for 6 months. The second time I was disoriented and tired for the rest of the day, couldn't focus. Both times, I turned around and held my hands up and said "What'd you do that for?" as plain as possible, pretending like I could see. Figured that was the best way to avoid being kicked to death on the cold floor. Never saw my assailant in either case, they both ran away when I didn't react like it even hurt me. And then I proceeded to find a wall and stumble my way to my next classroom and hoped I wouldn't die like the guy at the end of Thunderbolt & Lightfoot. And people wonder why I'm pro home-schooling today.

That always made me nervous at the ruck, wide stance, go to secure ball when someone flies in with a shoulder without binding to the ruck or even coming thru the gate. A good amateur official has to police that part of the game. I never understood why they took stamping on the hands and forearms seriously but didn’t always gaf about dangerous clean outs

Wagner looked a little off after the hit from behind from Diallo, before Hayes even hit him. When he collides with the other Piston player he's standing still with his head in a weird position, and then Hayes hits the back of his head. Ugly situation. Diallo should catch a few games, Hayes should catch a LOT of games. Wagner maybe one for the push.
Watch more overhead view in slower speed, and focus on Wagner's head whiplash and hit the Piston player before Hayes hits him.
Edit to add: Baseline angle looking at Detroit bench. I'd say Wagner is out before Hayes hits him. Doesn't lessen or condone Hayes hit by any means.

In this slow motion video it looks a bit like that but it's just that his head went back from being pushed in the back. It looks odd because it's 0.05 seconds slowed way down so every little bobble looks like he's unconscious. If he was already unconscious from the push (seriously, a mediocre push in the back knocking a guy out, really, you think that?) he would have crumpled.
