Hi Phil, thanks for your kind feedback - really appreciate that😀. My mission, as always, is to keep you informed and safe. Please let me know if you go. If you have the chance to pick a great weather window you'll have a stellar day out. Ciao, happy and safe hiking.
My soul aches to be back here during COVID - we took so much for granted. Stay safe, be patient, hope we can see our spirits soar in nature again soon, Ciao, xx
Lived in Auckland 56-62 and used to climb and ski on Ruapehu.National Downhill run was run by a joker Scruffy Turner. We used to swim in Crater Lake as they had a small area roped off.Picked up lots of obsidian(volcanic glass) Also did a three day hike over Mt Tarawera.Great times with Auckland Tramping Club at Salt Hut.
Thanks. New Zealand is well worth a visit. It's compact & full of stunning scenery. I hope you make it there one day. Ciao. Keep safe and enjoy your time in the great outdoors:)
Did this couple of days ago. Bit of a scramble to get there but not too hard or long (we took the lifts up and down from the Cafe) and absolutely worth it for the views near the top. Your video was very helpful as not experienced with off track hiking - thanks!
Great video. I did the Tongariro Crossing two weeks ago on a gorgeous day. It was a great experience and the views there are magnificent. Don't think I have the experience and fitness to do the Mt Ruapehu Crater Climb though. I guess this is as far as I can go to enjoy it. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks. I agree that The Tongariro Crossing is a great experience - stellar views. The Crater climb is possible if you increase fitness and get a little more experience. The TC takes fittness too so never say never. Well done. Happy & safe hiking:)
Thanks for encouragement. I will do my best to get in better shape. I have broken my left tibia near the knee joint. Although it's been a while, it still gives me a big headache when hiking or walking long distances. Please do upload any new videos of your adventures. Would be great to see them. All the best :)
You're doing really well. Have you considered using dual hiking poles? - they take the pressure off joints, especially downhill:) Invest in lightweight poles so you don't get tired. My favourites are the aluminium Black Diamond Distance Z-poles. Their even lighter carbon poles are more expensive and less robust (they can break by tripping over them!). All the best.
Probably the best video I have seen of Mt Ruapehu , with great text info . Thanks for posting.
