Hey there Jon, I’m a big fan of small stream Brookie fishing. Here’s some tips. Gear wise, especially in small streams with a lot of overhang, a 7.5 foot 3 or 2 wt is the way to go with 5x line. You definitely would benefit from a net as these fish tend to come off pretty easy (also helps to keep the fish in the net while you get pics) the prince nymph that you used seems appropriate but I wouldn’t be discouraged to throw things even a little smaller. Working up the stream is the best way to find and stay hidden from the fish, it’s hard work crawling up the boulders but it’s definitely worth.
@@JonBrollinyo Jon can we do a video together I’m 13 and trying to make my channel a bit bigger I’m in Australia right now and making a series called one last bite but it would be so sick if when I come to Texas in two months we could make a video together it’s a big ask but it would be awesome
@@JonBrollin Sounds like I've been missing out, one day I'll have to give in and get a fly setup. I can imagine it being frustrating learning to cast and retrieve a fly lure, anyway thanks for the reply and keep fishing never stop!
Jon I just realized ive been watching your videos for about 8 years now. Before the googan squad was formed and you were just a kid dropping out of school to chase his dream. Im glad you did it man. Keep Fishing Never Stop!🎣
Literally no better feeling than casting a dry fly at rocks where your surprised there are even fish.. and then they happen to be the most beautiful fish to ever live lol. Havent been bass fishing much the past year because id rather catch 10-16 inch wilds on the fly!!!!!! Always a learning experience, and it will test you hard! Jon b x Wild Fly would be a dope collab.
My buddies and I love doing this kind of fishing in the smokies scrambling over boulders for little native brookies. can’t beat it! a dry fly and nymph rig slays them💪🏼
I love it! Next door neighbor, here in NH, where in the white mountains, we have a whole bunch of these streams, some teeming with native brookies! So much fun with a 2-3wt fly combo or an ultra light rod! Happy you found a healthy population of natives up there!🎉
One of my favorite youtubers doing the thing I love most. Just exploring a little trout stream in the middle of the woods. Easily some of the best fishing videos out there on youtube
Jon, gotta say bud. I've followed u on this channel for yrs now. Love seeing ya grow as a fisherman and also as a normal human being. Kudos buddy... keep up the great work..
The video I've been waiting for since the Maine adventures began. I wanted to jump into the screen, firstly, to fish those spots, & secondly, to help you out with your fly fishing! 😂
Really digged this one. Grew up on inshore salt, moved towards the mountains ~3 yrs ago and taught myself how to fly fish. Fell in love with fishing all over again. Also, hard to beat a little popper on the fly for smallies! Give it a try next time on the big water.
Cool to see how well your fishing skills translate to completely different fishing practices. From smallies to gt to fly fishing. Very nice! Seemed like a great job fishing such a small stream.
Ive been waiting for you to make this video . Im so happy you got to enjoy fishijg for the natives. Ive taken many friends with me that get very frustrated in the small creeks. You made it happen though and the nymph you tide on right after the streamer is an all year slammer . Next time you go out give a dry dropper rig a try . Its a dry fly and a nymph below it, you wont have to rely on the feel as much .
Jon, I've been enjoying your video's for a while now, you always have great content. Love fishing brook trout & some rivers, Usually because you tend to get the bigger fish in the rivers, but not always. I've caught up to 15" trout out of brooks. Keep up the great work.
Jon if you ever find yourself down in North Carolina let us know we would love to take you up to the parkway to chase the native brookies! Great minds think alike, we were out catching them yesterday when you uploaded this!
Love fishing like this, my favorite part about having a cabin in the UP of Michigan is small creek fishing brookies in the middle of nowhere. Love the video Jon
Can’t go wrong with a dry dropper rig in these tiny creeks! Sometimes a big foam hopper and bead head nymph will do it, other times a more natural dry with a tiny midge pattern will get more eats. Great video!
Love seeing this fly fishing content. Best way to stay connected with those lil brookies on the fly in my experience is to strip set and lift, always keep your stripping hand on the line when possible. Also keep your hook stupid sharp
Great video Jon! I’ve gotten into fly fishing these smaller streams here in NJ for wild trout and its my new favorite style of fishing. A recommendation that I have is running what’s called a dry dropper set up. It’s using a dry fly up top which the trout will eat but I also use as an indicator and then from that running a 16-18 inch leader (5.5-6x tippet) from the dry fly hook down to a nymph. It’s by far the most effective way I’ve found to catch these wild trout. Hope this helps!
More of this please💯 try throwing some small terrestrials representing what’s in you area( micro hoppers, beetles, ants) brooks are super agressive and my favorite way to catch them is on top water.
You should of picked up and grabbed one of those tenkara rods while in Japan. It’s a perfect fishing style for those little steams. Love the fly fishing videos!
I think this style is fishing is so cool because you get to have an obstacle course and small adventure while at it. I can see how fly fishing is an extremely challenging process in this environment and I've had my fair share of frustration getting caught in bushes and trees. I was almost going to cave and go with a BFS baitcaster system for stuff like this, easier casting, accurate but I just can't bring myself to step away from my fly fishing gear.
Sling some dry flies out there! You’ll get some nice trout topwater action Btw love the fly fishing videos, id love to see you try and catch a giant grass carp on the fly if you are up to the challenge.
Hey jon it looked like you didn't have a dry fly on your rig. Doing a dry-dropper is nice in those pools as you can get rising fish and the ones sitting at the bottom. The dry fly can also act as a bobber to help you get a quicker hookset.
@@JonBrollinnope brook trout are really aggressive and most of the year if you throw a stimulator dry fly where they are they will absolutely hammer it
Fish small dry flies in those small creeks. The fish generally are not picky and tend to be very optimistic. Hit every little pocket. It's hard to go wrong with an elk hair caddis.
Is it me or is the DJI camera not as smooth and crispy as the GoPro? These back woods streams always surprise me with the fish that actually live there. Tight lines Jon
In New Mexico fly fishing the san Juan river I was using 2x line tied to 4x and then 6x then leader. using size 20 midges catching 15-21 inch browns and rainbows. one of my most challenging fly trip but what blast it was.
I'll be in Baxter State Park this coming Friday. Thanks for inspiring us amateur fly fishers. PS) Beautiful video of the joys of catching tiny brookies on a fly rod, when nobody is watching except maybe Bigfoot. :)

As a N.Y. fly guy I agree with your tips. Although 5x seems a bit overkill
@@blueaggie64 I lose a lot of flies in trees when I use 6x. I think 5x is fine visibility wise and I tend to be able to get more flies back
good tips, i think 5x is perfect
@Aaron-rq4cs makes sense. He was fishing in tight quarters, but did well for a novice. I loved his appreciation for those wild brookies
