Comparing a VA to a regular taxable MF account is like saying a car costs more than a bike. Both will get you where you need to be and, if that's all you care about, the bike is the better choice. However, if protection from the weather, no physical exertion, safety features, smooth ride, etc. are important to you, as well; then you're going to have to pay-up for a car.
My grandpa invested in annuities and they were a smart move.
