    Very helpful explanation. My AC died in the middle of Texas summer and couldn't get someone to take a look for 3 days. Ordered a capacitor on Amazon same day, went out to lunch, and replaced it that afternoon. Works better than ever! Thank you for the walkthrough!

    EVERYONE that owns a HVAC unit just go ahead pull the cover off the side of the unit, take note of the size capacitor and just order one and keep it on hand. Its not if it will fail but when and it always fails at the worse time like on a weekend or super hot time of month where it could be a day or two before a tech can come out. Just order one... or two

      Also....take note of the contactor. Keep a spare of this too. A spare contactor and capacitor will likely be the main 2 items that will go bad after some years.

    Excellent video sir, not only do you do a really great job of camera placement as you test, but your explanations as you go through the video are clear and concise. I have watched many, many A/C videos and you are the first one, at least that I have seen, to explain what "Herm" means on top of the capacitor. While I know that it stands for "Hermetically Sealed Compressor", I'm sure there are many viewers that had no idea what it stands for. You are an asset to the A/C community. Great job.

    Everything you said was my scenerio. I replaced the capacitor. Then the contactor but the compessor never turned over. Contacted a so called pro and they came out. Hooked up testers and told me they chowed infinity and that my compressor was shot. He said let me see if I have a hard start kit. Went to his truck but didnt have one. Gave me 3 quotes for different set ups and left with my 90 dollar. trip charge fee. I was disgusted so they had the business owner come out and he also machine tested the xc and says theres no smoke and mirrors here and restated I needed a new compressor or unit. I saw your video and got a hard start kit. Hooked it up but nothing. I took a rubber mallet to the top and sides and the hard start kit did the trick. It started quicker then ever. It has been running better then when we bought the house 8 years ago if that is possible. Doesnt short cycle and starts very quickly. Hell the lights in my house dont dim either. My question is, should I seek my 90 dollars back? I mean I know nothing about HVAC but I feel screwed.

    • @electronicsNmore

      It's usually not advised. The capacitor works by having a fluid in it.....if it leaks "upright"......it may work a bit longer until you fix it. If it leaks cap-side down, it may fail very quickly once it leaks....no time to order a spare from Amazon !!😄

    AWESOME VIDEO! Our unit is behaving EXACTLY like this. Its a brand new unit, but, we just went through a deep freeze here in Texas last week and lost power for 4 days, and now today we are in the high 70s and wanted to kick the AC on the house to only get hot air out the vents. Went outside to inspect the unit and heard the same hum/buzz sound for a second and nothing out of the compressor. I've put in a ticket with our property managers but may just try checking the capacitor myself.

If you change out the original cap with a quality part and test it im guessing you will not need a hard start kit. When you found the red wire was restricting the height of the capacitor meaning you had to have cardboard as an insulator between the can and contactor you should as a diligent repair man have replaced the red wire with a longer one. After all you had both ends disconnected at some point. That also would have meant you could raise the capacitor up away from the contactor AND not have to reuse the burned contactor blade as there was a second blade but that was too close to the then very low capacitor.

    Dang good video! My heat pump just started acting up in heat mode. It actually started yesterday and blew the breaker. I reset it and could hear a slight hum and a weird flutter noise so I thought maybe the compressor went bad. I put it in AC mode and the compressor kicked in right away. I put it back in heat mode and the compressor did start up but the next AM it was humming again. I did replace the dual capacitor last spring but it made a loud POP when the unit came on and found out it was the contactor was bad also. I replaced the contactor and all last summer the AC ran great. So now I have to go get a real meter and check the capacitor and hope that is it. I did not replace the capacitor when it made that pop because the AC worked.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Does the reversing valve click when switched to heat? It's not the capacitor if it works fine for cooling. Tap into the heat pump wires with a DMM and check the AC input voltage. Normally 24-27VAC. Try tapping on the solenoid with the power off to the outside unit, and the thermostat set to heat. After doing that, turn on the outside unit.

    • @actechformallyyomama746
      @actechformallyyomama746 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Their were 3 other male connections on that circuit of the contactor. Instead of cleaning the one and reusing it. Also the points of a contactor are made of silver. The silver is soldered to either brass or copper. If the points become pitted or burned the silver is getting thin. The thickness of the silver is based on the amp rating of the contactor. When the silver gets thin you could have contact with the brass or copper. This will arch and probably weld shut. The compressor would not shut off or voltage would be affected both of which could damage the compressor.

    I have same symptom. Compressor tries to kick on with a hum for few sec but won't. Cooling fan runs. New condenser about 8 years old. When I hook up manifold gauges both read almost same temp without system running. Which I believe means only vapor is in the system signaling very low refrigerant. So I am thinking my prob is low refrigerant but how can I charge it if I can't get the compressor to kick on? How do I bypass the low pressure switch? If that isn't recommended do I just need to draw down and pull vacuum on system and recharge as if new? Thank you. I am in Texas and now not good time for a to go down.

    When the wires are short like that you can mount the cap upside down and that solves the short wire problem and keeps the cap away from the contactor.

      It's usually not advised. The capacitor works by having a fluid in it.....if it leaks "upright"......it may work a bit longer until you fix it. If it leaks cap-side down, it may fail very quickly once it leaks....no time to order a spare from Amazon !!😄

None of the others in the neighborhood make this sound. I am not sure what the issue is and I've been told by a local "builder warranty" co its a compressor, which they don't recommend replacement. Do you have any advice for me - replace/don't compressor or possibly something else. the unit runs great, but when it stops it makes a loud knock on turn down. I'd rather replace small, lesser expensive parts now, then wait till later. And FYI... the waranty co does not want to do work. Please help.

    This is exactly what my a/c unit is doing. When I measure across the output of the contractor to the wire on the cap coming from the compressor I get 240 Vac. Then when I hear the hum, which occurs every minute and a half, the 240 Vac drops to 0 Vac and returns back to 240 Vac. Thought I had a bad compressor.

    • @electronicsNmore

      I don't think you're measuring correctly. Just make sure the switched side of the contactor has 240V across the terminals when activated. You either have a faulty capacity or stuck compressor.

    Great video. A few days ago I decided to test my RV's AC (unit is like new). Like a fool I started it twice without waiting for the system to equalize (maybe only 2 minutes). First two attempts were successful. The third attempt something bad happened. Fan comes on normally compressor kicks on sounding about 50% slow and quiet (pulling a ton of amps) then after about 4 seconds the systems quits the attempt. About 12 seconds later the systems tries to start the compressor again with the same results. I don't have a meter to test the run capacitors level. It's a ton of money just to have a RV tech to come out and diagnose. Does this sound like I sort of killed the cap? Or did I damage the compressor?

      No I went on the roof of the trailer and it's starting up (it's vibrating) but it's just running like at half speed. Couldn't it be that the capacitor just isn't giving it of enough of a kick start fully to get it up and running? I'm praying I didn't damage the compressor otherwise as you know I'm looking at having to replace the entire unit.

  • @JanicekTrnecka
    @JanicekTrnecka 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Unfortunately when the capacitor fails it can affect the compressor too. Some shitty compressors dont include thermal and overload protection and prolonged seized state can damage the winding.
    Of course well engineered unit should just end up tripping thermal or current breakers over and over with no further damage.

    2:15 you said you were going to install a hard start kit. That was never referenced I assume you punted on adding that? I do have a question on this Hard Start thing however which I am sure you can answer...In your opinion does adding one of these degrade your existing capacitor? I installed one on my system and all is well except the unit is very noisy when coming on. You can clearly hear the click, 2-3 times louder than before. The lights in the house as well flicker. This was not the case pre-hard start. I was told these HS capacitors eliminate flicker not increase it. I am confused. What's your opinion on this, thanks.

    • @electronicsNmore
      @electronicsNmore  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I found the problem with the A/C, so there was no need for the hard start kit. The kit when installed properly, will not cause any problems. Make sure the main lugs in your breaker panel are tight, if they are, then call up the power company. You have a bad connection between the house and utility pole. Lights should not flicker.

    • @electronicsNmore

      The start capacitor(if used) gives a fan motor the torque it needs to start spinning then stops; while the run capacitor remains in-circuit giving the motor extra torque when needed. If a run capacitor becomes faulty, then a motor may still be able to turn on, but the running amperage will be higher than normal causing the motor to run hot and have a short life expectancy.
