Were you shooting in Warner Valley yesterday?
@@tylerfreeman6952 Sure was! I'm out there every day almost.
When do we get the review on that Bergara PRS rig? I am looking for validation on my purchase
I've thought about going out there a few times but it seems there I always tins of people camping.
@backfire please send me the link
I love that you are getting your wife into the sport. Some of my favorite memories are my wife and kids going out to her parents property to shot. Quality family time keeps the family together and we need this today. I’m 65 and I still try to get every one together to do some kind of family sport be it shooting fishing camping just anything. Love what you are doing!
I’m almost at 20 years and still can’t get her to the range or touch a rifle. I’m like “you’re a Texan and you hate guns?!?”
Hack No. 1 - Find a wife that will let you spend $2,500 on a rifle.
Most guys I know who own a lot of guns just avoid telling their wives how much they cost.
Your wife isn't supposed to LET you do anything. If I want something I'm gonna buy it because I worked for that money. That being said, I make sure all the bills are paid and I never put gun stuff before the financial well being of my family.
She's obviously thrifty. They even wash and reuse the old dishes, instead of buying fresh ones every day!
@@lyfandeth The real life hack here is to build a successful TH-cam channel for the sole purpose of funding your firearm purchasing addiction.
@@Barnes-ml9wg This is a great point. Personally I don't have a wife so it's a non issue, but any woman I may be involved with in the future will have to accept that I will be making my own decisions. I will take her opinion on board, but it will remain my decision when it comes to my money, or anything else. I know men who got the clot shot because their wife made them do it, even though they didn't want to. For me that would be grounds for divorce. My money my choice, and certainly my body my choice.
One of things i love about long range shooting is it doesn't matter if you are Male, female, young ,old or disabled everyone is on a level playing field. We have benchrests at Waikerie Rifle Club here in South Australia so anyone can come and try.
Congrats on MARRYING UP!!!! You found a keeper!!!
No such thing, and even if there was you wouldn't want it
@@jay_motocombatsounds like we found the beta!
Pretty good informative and instructional video when you can get a relatively non shooter, in this case your wife Emily, to achieve the group size shown, with virtually her first ever group attempt and to then go on to a very near miss at 1000 yards is a tribute to the inherent accuracy of that particular rifle, ammo combination, allied to her obvious natural ability. I think we can look forward to more of these duo events
Always good to see new beginners enjoy the sport. Looking forward to the next series.
Bring her out more often - so much postive energy!
Not a hunter, which much of your content is targeted to, but really enjoy your channel. Good info for anyone that enjoys firearms!!
Same. I don't think I'll ever get into long range shooting but I enjoy learning about it.
Awesome content! I love how you took a beginner and showed how the basic fundamentals make a huge difference. I remember my first trail and error setting up my .308 with no experience and I wasted so much ammo trying to figure out my scope. Now that I know some of the fundamentals it is so much easier setting up a new gun
In my experience, women tend to be very good shooters. They're patient, thoughtful, don't have an ego to overcome, and are good listeners/learners. I bet if you did that same challenge with a man who's never (or very rarely) shot before, you might eventually end up with similar results, but it would be more difficult to get there. Great video!
I thought about your comment and I was like ehh but then I thought back to my last few examples in my own experience, you’re spot on. Both people were the same age, main difference was the guy had shot more on his own accord in the past and established a few habits that weren’t very effective
@@SilverbackSasquatch19xx Even throughout history, some of the worlds deadliest snipers have been women. Long range shooting may be one "sport" where women actually have an advantage over men. It's difficult to judge though, because there just aren't that many women shooters that are into it the way men are.
@@m73m95 I agree, as a generalization they have a lack of desire for it, drive is likely to push achievement
This is dumb. Are you trying to get over (some) women's insecurities about shooting for them or your own misogyny/misandry? What is the exact right amount of patience required to shoot well? Exactly how much ego is too much? If I'd said "Leftie shooters are more patient, thoughtful, and less ego driven and that makes them good shooters. I bet if you did that same challenge with a rightie, you might eventually end up with similar results, but it would be more difficult." Would you be thinking I'm crazy, trying to figure out why I'm defending lefties and putting down righties or both?
@@adamlucas4753 Everything ok?
She is absolutely precious how excited she's getting over shooting!
The newly released Garmin Doppler "Cronno" device is amazing. I could easily see it helping the serious hunter a ton. Especially in changing weather conditions.
Hmm... I haven't seen that. I'll check it out.
You can build a highly accurate chrono with 2 coils and your audio jack on a laptop. The archery community has developed free software that automatically analyzes the input, you just need to let it know the distance between coils. Any conductive projectile will work.
Lots of good information here.
Very cool that you had your wife showing how much fun shooting can be for a newbie.
Thank you for all the tips and hacks.
I was watching a retired Navy SEAL sniper instructor who explained why it is better to breath through the shot than hold your breath. I have zero experience at shooting at these ranges, but I thought I'd toss that out there. I think his name was Chris Sajnog? I'm assuming he's legit. Your wife's joy and excitement really made the video more entertaining.
Extremely helpful video! And a trophy wife for not only being willing to, but being excited for all the stuff we get wound up for.
Backfire is a Lucky Man. I have been wanting to say it for a long time
He is a cool dude. Happy to see his wife is hot. Good for him.
Before you adjust parallax you need to adjust the focus for your eye. So many shooters I help learn to shoot long range do not know that step or forget it. If your focus on the magnification lense where you are looking into is not adjusted correctly for your eye sight specially your parallax will not truly be correct. Also after focus is adjusted, before tuning your parallax knob you should turn the parallax knob to max and bring it from max right to where your reticle stops for you careful not to go past that point or you need to max out again and bring it back. This is done to take the lash out of parallax of cheaper scopes like Arken
In all my years at the range punching 300 yard groups, which is as far as I can go, no one has ever mentioned the thumb should lay on the same side as the index finger as opposed to wrapping around the grip. Thank you for this, and I'm going to try this the next time out
Nice to see someone paying attention to accuracy and detail, and NOT doing mag dumps.
Stumbled upon this video/channel when it came up in my feed. Excellent video/advice! As a self taught shooter & reloader, it has taken me several years and thousands of rounds down range to figure out what you presented on here. And you gave me some information/tips that I need to put in my playbook. Thanks for sharing!
Self taught reloader? Here in my old country you have to visit a state certified course "how to handle explosives 101" or you can go to jail if you just start reloading. Good old clownworld.
You two are a cute couple, -but yes a informative/well made video. Thanks
Jim, you've good taste. Looooove the Bergara Comp!
It's not the range of the shot, it's the size of the target.
You have to do the dishes because she missed? Hmm could she have purposely missed ??? 😂
It's a dark conspiracy. I never should have trusted that lady.
No woman would ever fake it 🤣
I have a gen 3 ruger precision 6.5 Creedmoor and with 147 grain hornady match ammo it shoots 1/2" all day my first 5 shot group at 1000 was 10.5 " and my second group was 8.5 " the first shot was 2' low and about 10 to 12" right made my adjustments and Holy crap I love the Ruger with just a bit over $2000 into it .
It is a great experience having a partner that you can rely on. You have a pretty good team for this kind of activity.
Meanwhile, _Mark & Sam After Work_ steps up with a .30-30 Uberti, a duct taped on ladder rear sight, and walks a free-hand shot into 1000 yards in like 4 shots. hahahaha
That team is amazing.
One thing I have noticed with respect to body alignment is that in keeping your shooting side in a straight line with your rifle, helps keep the muzzle flip in a straight vertical. I agree with the others; congrats on keeping your family involved!
I like your videos and when you involve your wife and kids and make it a family thing. Tell Emily congrats for, in my opinion a successful go at it. I know grown men who are afraid to try this. I am sure you are proud of her as I certainly am! Keep up the good work and keep the family safe. Kudo's from South Louisiana!
Can we all agree he outkicked his coverage with that wife?
Agreed.
@@backfire Glad you have a sense of humor!

@@hUnTnlolz24 100%! I respect a man with a sense of humor.
Depends on how he gets down. A lot of folks would say the same about my girl, but she isn't going anywhere. We been through that, she decided men in general aren't capable.
I'd say it's a humble brag, but it's not. She came back two years later and told me I ruined sex for her, and we got back together.
Maybe he's got the skills to pay the bills. Who knows?
I’ve told multiple people that 1000 yard shot is wayyy easier than you would think. It’s intimidating at first, but once that first shot hits the target you just want to go further 😂
Yeah it's not that much of a challenge in todays world. Unless you listen to a bunch of the people on this channel that think 400 is almost impossible and never shot past
Just admit it. This video was basically 60% foreplay...... 40% firearms knowledge.
Dream Job, Lots of great guns, and Dream Wife = Lucky Man. Really fun video.
I like the fact that you are rocking a Bergara. For a reasonably priced rifle, they are great for long range. My next bolt action will be a Bergara chambered in .300 WinMag. Personally, I think it is the definitive "bang for your buck" bolt gun. I'm stuck on the scope though. Experimentally(and not well tested) cheap optic V trial proven(and very expensive, probably more than the rifle) scope. I'm sure that I will end up spending $1200 on the rifle and $3000 on the glass. Because the scope makes the difference at 1000 meters.
Spend as much as you can on the optic, optics last forever, rifles only last until you get bored and move onto the next one.
Tikka>bergara
@@StuninRub true story haha
Jim, thank you for a great instructional video, as always, for inexperienced and experienced shooters alike. Congratulations, Emily, on some fine shooting!
I find it refreshing that Lear Capitol is embracing shooting sports; in today's unpredictable political climate that is a bold stance.
well your videos have officially gotten 5x better just with the new addition to scenery.
I love my Bergara .17 HMR. You just took me to another level with the 6.5 Creed.
Granted, that is a heavy oversize barrel, but the general rule is to let the barrel cool after 3 shots on most larger caliber rifles. Smaller calibers like the AR, free float stocks, and so on can handle a LOT more. The free float stock is especially important in this case. You don't want the stock grip to affect the barrel. A free float totally eliminates that problem.
You are both awesome. Keep her on the show!!
Bro. So awesome that you did this with your wife. My wife was like "hmmmm, maybe I CAN do that.". Thanks!
Before you do anything, check to make sure the action screws are torqued correctly.
I have a basic 223 rifle...... use 75 grain bullets.....loaded with Reloader 15 24.7 grains. Case is almost full ! At 1000 yards Im able to hit a target the size of a volleyball with ease. ( no wind.....smoke going straight up ) No need for a special rifle to do this !
My man you found an angel on earth! And yes long range is actually pretty easy. Ive hit 1000 yards the first time i brought my savage axis out to the range. American eagle 140 grain open tip match. Only had to use holds for it too, wasnt hardly any wind that day.
Great description of the mechanics, this is a great video for people new to firearms as well as seasoned shooters.
Awesome range-scape.
I like to see the diversity of ranges people use. 👍
These are some really great instructions. Thanks for making these videos.
Regarding shooting positions, what I've noticed is LOP importance. In the proper prone position, lined up as you both were, the LOP/eye relief is substantially longer vs when you would be shooting off hand. Eye relief changes dramatically. If you hold your hunting, while standing, as though you were stalking and just jumped a deer at 50 yards, your body is NOT square with the direction you aim. Your rifle is nearly parallel to your shoulder to shoulder position as though you are just about aiming to your right or left. Change that back to the prone position and now you've just increased LOP and thus, extended your eye relief. Every time I get a rifle built and request a 12.5" LOP I'm told, "that's short." Well it is. But that is the only way I can see out of the scope at full magnification when I'm lined up straight behind the rifle. I've never found or tested any ring mounts that can shorten eye relief while maintaining a stock with a standard LOP of 13 to 13.5 inches. And most all of my shots are while prone
Good point. I should have adjusted that for her, as well as the cheek piece.
@@backfire Well I was just making a comment since you had indicated proper prone position. Was she able to visualize the entire scope window at full magnification while prone? I know I can't out of any of my scopes regardless of make mag model. I can see about half the eye piece diameter, well, until I started getting shorter stocks. Both of my MDT chassis buttstocks are 12.5"
@@backfire Have you reviewed the Garmin XERO C1 Pro chronograph?
Just listened to Work Energy your book on a road trip with my kids.. They really enjoyed it. You and your wife need to do a video with Jon and his wife with WPSN.
I love your sponsors, good solid sponsers. - greetings from South Africa
Jim, what is the best way to measure the "height above bore" that ballistic apps require? How about a short video showing how to measure, please? Thanks.
Great video, especially for someone just getting started in long-range shooting; as well as getting the wife into it as well. Thank you, Sir, really enjoyed the information.
Her closing statement was awesome.
How the hell are you two not on commercials on TV? Perfect couple! Hope you guys the best. Great video also
This is what they mean when they say it's easier to train a green shooter. She has no flinch, no bad habits and takes direction well. She could become an incredible shooter if she wants.
I need to upgrade to nicer bags. I've been using a sock filled with beans for the last few years, not sure if it matters on the type of bean but I think they are pinto. Served me well.
"I won't touch the rifle" then can't stop touching the rifle
Wow I started watching your TH-cam and your voice sounded so familiar. I used to listen to your photography pod cast. You’re shooting rifles instead of cameras. I like you video. Just like your podcast you’re interesting and informative.
That’s awesome, I am going to use this video to convince my wife to start shooting with me!
Please don's use rings on a longrange rifle, llways use a block mounting. It's more expensive, but it's worth the extra money,
One thing I've run across over and over is to NOT have any support on the rifle barrel itself. You say the flexible forearm causes problems itself, so you need to address both problems.
It Will throw off your grouping. You can group, but not as tight and you will get (close) flyers. See your groups and the flyer.
Support it on the stock forearm.
See other TH-cam Vids on the subject.
I use Talley rings on my 6.5 PRC Browning X-Bolt Pro. The rear ring has a built in bubble level and, because I'm "fashion forward" I got the rings in a matching bronze Cerakote. I can get cold barrel 3 shot groups that average 3/4 MOA all the time. After the barrel warms up it's often 1 1/4 MOA groups.
When you say 1 1/4 moa after warm up how many shots does it take to "warm up" and are those still 3 shot groups?
After 3 shots it begins to open groups
By 5 or 6 shots i get 1 1/4 MOA.@@Rickjames127
By the 5th shot I'm getting 1 1/4" groups at least. Often 1 1/2 MOA..@@Rickjames127
By the 5th shot I get 1 1/4 MOA using HORNADY Precision Hunter.@@Rickjames127
It’s nice to see some one being honest about the ranges that are shooting at , I’ve seen guys claiming to shoot out to a mile with a 6.5 cm with a super sniper, lol. Good job
tapered scope mounts helps with long range. It is really easy to shoot long range if you can find one of those underground ranges! That is a place where the wind is removed from the equation. But if you want wind, try Camp Perry!
Awesome stuff! The chemistry between you and your wife is great!
Family it's always the best 🎉🎉🎉best regards from Brazil🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷
As a hunter, if I'm making a really long shot, I'll take a couple of complete breaths, and then take a third, and release it until I get to halfway - and that gives me time with oxygen left in my lungs to hold at that position for much longer than if I was to almost empty the lungs. I also pay attention to my heartbeat and shoot between the beats.
OMG she wasn’t ever trying but managed to pump him up. “I don’t come out and shoot I just stare at your Guns.” That was funny.
Great video, thanks 🤗
I just happened across this video, I started watching and was like, “hey that looks like my cousin!” Ha great video, I had no idea you had a channel.
Thank you for the video. I don't currently have a range where I can shoot 1000 yds, but I am hoping someday. I knew many of the things you discussed, but it really helped to remind me of some things I need to, such as building profiles in my Kestrel app. I am fortunate to have a MagentoSpeed Chronograph. You mentioned in your video that the velocities listed on the box are usually faster than "actual" velocity from an individual gun. Personally, I have found if my gun has a barrel equal to or longer than the barrel used by the manufacturer then my velocities have all been faster. Usually not more than just a few feet, but still faster. If the barrel is shorter my velocities have been slower. In some cases as much as 200 fps slower with a barrel just 2 inches shorter. Again, thank you for the video. Excellent information.
What I hate is when they use a 24" test barrel to generate published velocities on a cartridge that will likely be fired in a 16-20" barrel like a 30/30 win or a 5.56
@@InWithBothFeet I completely agree with you. Personally, if they are going to go with a single generic barrel length I think it should be 20 inches. Most hunting rifles are not 24”, let alone the AR style or lever guns.
If you're making videos, suggest you demonstrate range safety and use a chamber flag with the mag out until ready to shoot even if it's not chambered.
As far as the initial group I think they both win in the sense that he taught her well but due to her total lack of experience shooting firearms that's a great group for a beginning shooter respectfully
Curious if he would encourage her to pursue getting into amateur shooting competitions who knows she might want her own PRS rifle for Christmas
Love seeing how happy she is

or if your shooting 6.5CM and shooting mills with a 2.5 inch offset just take the first number off the distance your shooting and subtract 2 so at @1000. 10-2=8Mil @700. 7-2=5Mil ect..

Nice lady, And you explained all that very well, Very easy to understand.
With regards to the Hornady app, you provide great info. I made the opposite mistake, I was trying to use 4dof for some low grain .224 bullets that they didn't have 4dof calcs for. Eventually when I tried the bc calculator, I found the bullets I was looking for.
If 1000 yards is that simple sign up for 1000 yard challenge by texas plinking
I can't be the only one watching the screen grab from swat screaming it's a BBgun.
Haha. Yeah. That scene had me rolling on the floor laughing.
This is my first time viewing one of your videos. I'm curious have you shot the "milk jug challenge" ?
If i lived in Utah I would for sure be doing that.
I'd do the dishes if that lady spent the day doing what I liked doing too! She might turn into the "Next Sara Conner" especially since you're already in the desert.
That picture that you added from the SWAT TV show, I'm like 95% sure the guy with the massive height over bore has a break barrel air rifle!😂
If you have an accurate rifle with compatible ammo it will entertain and amaze your friends to shoot 600-1,000 yards...until they fire 1/2 dozen shots and figure out how easy it is. Then they'll just know how much fun it is. mid/long range is overcoming mental impression - "that's so far".
I have that exact scope and its fantastic.
The style of shooting bag is one thing, the filling in it is what really makes or breaks it. What do you use as shooting bag filler?
Having nerve issues with my neck and back the slow squeeze of the trigger doesn't always work for me. Nerve twitches cause related movement in the reticle, one of the ways I have compensated for this is a much quicker yet smooth trigger pull. This way the rifle goes off at the moment I want it to instead of a surprise, almost eliminating nerve damage related reticle movement.
this is great!
