- Can one sew a Victorian blouse from the 1890s, full of insertion lace, as a One Day Make? Yes (barely)! During the 1890s shirtwaists became fashionable casual wear for Victorian ladies and working women alike. Cut initially like menswear shirts, these blouses were part of a change in fashion and in history, as the New Woman of the Belle Epoque won greater access to education, professional achievement, and life on her own terms. They were practical but could be beautiful as well, and around the turn of the century were decorated with all manner of frills and lace.

In one day? You're so good. I can barely do a basic take in of clothes in one day without wanting to stop for that future day when I'm magically better without practising
Aww, please don't be down on yourself thinking people can do this without practice! No one can. I had already cut, assembled, and made up the pattern once in different fabric, as well as doing a sampler of 5 different methods for the insertion lace. Even with all that prep it was a super intense and tiring day.
Oooh! Set it aside for when I get better without practicing! I know that one!
Thank you Snappy Dragon for readily admitting to the practice and planning behind pulling this off. I’m still impressed with whole “doing it” aspect of having done the planning and practice, and then the actual thing, and it being done. While I have no doubt I can learn most things if I practice, I have big and realistic doubts about my patience and frustration tolerance while learning the things.
It looks so good! I want to try something like that too, but it's so intimidating. I really want to make an entire 1890's outfit, and videos like this are very inspiring. Although I doubt my insertion lace will turn out that nice on the first try. And in only one day, I'm not even gonna think about trying that!
You can do it! It takes time and practice, and there's nothing wrong with that :) I've made wearable mockups of almost every piece in the 1890s ensemble I'm working on, which has the side benefit of bonus clothes as well as trial runs.

SnappyDragon Do you “pay for it” the next day? I am also a person with chronic pain and I find the longer I try to push through the pain, the more I “pay for it”. One of our daughters is getting married in two weeks and I’m taking an inflatable bed to tuck away in a room so I can make it through the whole event! Lol
Congratulations! Yes, I do sometimes pay for things the next day/week, but it's usually events like CoCoVid or stuff I have to leave my house for. With this, I just rested the next day and was okay. The inflatable bed is such a clever idea!

Thank you so much! It was a pretty intense day, normally I'd do something like this over 3 or 4 afternoons.
You know I wouldn't wish pain on anybody, but it did something to me deep down inside to see someone else who constantly knocks up against the same pain limitation I have to live with. To hear those words I say so often come out of someone else's mouth. Got one minute into this video and had to break off and have a weep. Not even sure why. I guess I'm just grateful I'm not alone.

Thank you! After this, I would say it takes a lot of time and labor but it doesn't feel *complicated* . I am very glad I did a sampler for practice and technique testing before charging ahead, though.
I'm not much of a garment sewer. I CAN and do sew, just not clothing and usually small things as I don't have a machine, like my little mini bears, fully jointed and about 8 cms tall when standing. I also crochet, and I enjoy crocheting lace. This means I have hand worked cotton tape lace all over the show and nothing to use it on. Lol I'm thinking I might just have to sew an Edwardian shirtwaist style shirt......looks lovely and cool too. You did a hell of a job there....it looks lovely.

im finishing my second childs bathrobe, this one is for a child who has grown faster than my getting to doing their robe so a lot of adjusting. did most last night finishing it now. (hemming)
DAYBROK3 my wife made a beautiful winter jacket for out daughter. Between the original measurements and completion of the jacket, our daughter did a growth spurt, and was able to wear the jacket once ☹️.

Take or leave anything I've said, it won't bother me at all.
I made one similar in the 80's but in beige and I did a hidden button placket front. Time for me to make another one as I no longer have a blouse in good repair. I got 17 years of wear out of the old one before it could no longer be mended. It helps a lot if you iron each seam as you go. Just pressing the seam without opening it, melds the stitches. I also press the fabric away from the insertion, then do a narrow zig zag stitch before trimming of the excess.
These days, I sew mostly black.

@@webwarren That's certainly true! I don't have a serger, and I found this quicker than having to do another pass with my machine.
You did great! It looks so nice, elegant and comfy. May I respectfully ask what was the level of pain after you finished this particular project? Lately is becoming harder and harder for me to sew. A small project could take days. And the recovery afterwards is longer. But I don't want to completely give it up.
Honestly, my shoulders got pretty angry around 4pm. I decided it was worth it for me to keep going because I knew I'd be fine after some rest the next day, but no one should ever feel like they *have* to push that hard. All bodies (especially bodies with chronic pain) are different and it's okay to go at your own pace, whatever that is.
I just thought I would tell you that I think you are really pretty.
I’ have a white sheet that I plan to make a nightgown out of I think the bodice is going to resemble a Victorian blouse and a connected skirt that I want to be kinda slim but stil flowy

Beautiful blouse would enjoy making one for myself though it's about 1000 years later than my preferred time eriod. Wouldn't make it with insertion lace though, use the lace but leave the fabric backing in place. The idea of all those see through spaces would mean I couldn't wear it as is. Not keen on leg-o-mutton sleeves either, not since childhood.looks lovely on you though.
I found you through cocovid and it was amazing seeing other chronic pain sufferers talk about crafting with these disabilities. I know this isn't a Fibro channel, but I was wondering what kinds of things you do outside of crafting to help manage day to day. I've been officially diagnosed for 2 years but suffering longer than that myself. I always love getting knew tips and ideas from different people. Glad I found your channel. Your videos have been so fun to watch.
Thank you! Uhh, to be honest it's a lot of overthinking, topical pain relievers (drugstore and herbal/homemade), exercising lots without overdoing it, and doctors that take me seriously. Mostly overthinking, because I've managed to structure my life in quarantine to avoid nearly everything that pushes my limits 😅
Very beautiful! Is there a pattern that doesn’t have the really high tight collar? I have a real problem with clothing that sits too close to the front of my throat! I love how you did the insertion lace and I’m really impressed that you finished the whole garment in one day! Your skirt is very lovely as well and the bun on top of your head was cute! Are you thinking of making a jacket or vest of some sort to go with the rest of the outfit?
Awww, thanks! I believe most shirtwaists did have collars like this, but TV494 has as stand-and-fall collar that might be more comfortable?

Thank you! I definitely was pushing myself and was quite exhausted at the end of the day, but I'm familiar enough with my limits and how well I'm likely to bounce back that I felt safe doing it. After some rest and foam rolling the next day I was back to normal 😊

I couldn't help thinking the full bodice of the shirt looked like it needed more puff behind it, though. Maybe some fluffier ruffles all down the front of the corset cover? Not that it isn't pretty as-is, but for that full pigeon-breasted Edwardian look, I'm just saying.
Thank you! I'm targeting the late 1890s with this blouse, so the pigeon-breasted look was not my goal. You are absolutely right that it would work well into the Edwardian era though! I have plans for a fluffy corset cover so I can wear it both ways.

oh hi.. it looks like have a standing desk to sew on? and that you stand to sew? i am asking cause i have been curious about doing this but can not figure out how to work the foot part .. if you do stand to sew how do you work it? please and thank you :)
I have an adjustable-height worktable, and my back hurts less if I have it up pretty high. When I stand the pedal is on the floor and I have most of my weight on the other foot. I also sometimes sit in a tall chair and have the pedal on a low shelf built into the table.

These are small ceramic tiles from a large hardware store, with stick-on craft felt on the bottom. @Enchanted Rose Costumes has a tutorial, I think!
