But I think it's slowly disappearing from German usage, I think? 🤔 Now my question to the English-speaking people here: Is "a number" also used by you when it comes to a song, or do you not even know what we're talking about? 😅
We use the word number, (nummer in Dutch) also when we refer to a particular song. For example : In English: I realy like this song. We can say the same: Ik vind dit echt een leuk liedje. Or we can say: Ik vind dit echt een leuk nummer. Nummer just refering to the song, not to the place in a chart or any thing like that any more. It might started out that way though. But we Dutch use the word nummer in many more situations. Strange come to think about it... I know 3 instances I could and would use it. Or have used it in regular chatting. I've used it like getting back at somebody, Op z'n nummer zetten. Putting him\her on her place. For having sex, Een nummertje maken. (Mostly imo) Having a quicky. But do not say that to just anybody ofcourse. Alway's stay respectfull! More like talking to friends and you see somebody walking by, you could say that to your friends about the other person. But not loudly and younger people might not use it anymore. They have their own slang I do not understand... 😂
