Conquering Clear Glass

- After a very long journey and over 20 attempts, I finally find success in something that's continuously eluded me: making optically clear glass. Starting from resources I've collected from their natural source, I add one more ingredient to finally make this long-sought goal achievable.

Today, getting what you need is as easy as a trip to the store. From food to clothing, energy, medicine, and so much more, Andy George will discover what it takes to make everything from scratch. His mission is to understand the complex processes of manufacturing that is often taken for granted and do it all himself. Each week he’s traveling the world to bypass the modern supply chain in order to harvest raw materials straight from the source. Along the way, he’s answering the questions you never thought to ask.

Many years ago i was in a "Glashütte". Baically a German Glass producer. they explained us there that to get rid of of the greenish tone from the Iron impurities they add "braunstein" which is, if my School chemistry doesnt fail me, Mangandioxid. While Iron is the yellowish green tone Mangandioxid will make it violett. Both are complementary colours so you end up with gray clear glass. Thats what they at least explained to us.
But seeing as you mentioned making soap you propably knew that the Mangandioxid is know as "Glasmacherseife", Glas maker soap.
Mangandioxid? i thought it was weabootonium
@@thatsmadness1865 Germans use a slightly different chemical nomenclature than us; we'd call it "Manganese Dioxide". Still a real thing.

The green color is some by-product of the iron in the glass. Low iron glass reads closer to blue and has a slightly clearer appearance. Nice work, took a lot of glass blowers years to figure out what you covered
that explains why glass can look a little green.
Years? You mean centuries. Or rather, a couple millennia even!

I think a more appropriate wording would be "standing on the shoulders of a pile of dwarfs". There's probably many more small contributions from random people that collectively added up to get where humanity got, than large contributions from a few significant people.

The greenish color is due to iron impurities, which might be contained in your starting material. Or it is is just due to the multiple purings on steel plates.

What I like about this series is how it shows that much of what we take for granted today takes more then what the average person could ever be able to do them selfs. It also shows how much modern items are reliant on others to make.

100 years ago, the Entente conquered the Central Power.
Today, Andy conquered clear glass.
Glass floats on molten tin... that how they use to make flat glass panes
The float method might help wit his annealing issues.
You also want to vaccum bell it to remove the bubbles
Watching this is like watching the entire evolution of glass making, from early experiments to opaque globs to translucent plates, to the final clear form. Great stuff.

Hi Andy,
I really enjoyed the video. It's amazing to see how far you've come. Have you considered washing your sand with hot HCl to remove any trace iron impurities? When you dissolved your roasted sand/NaOH mixture and filtered out the insolubles, the color was reddish brown. To me, that suggests there were Fe(III) ions in solution. If you were to wash your sand in HCL with your sep funnel (followed by washing steps with distilled water) a few times before the roasting step, I bet you could greatly reduce the iron impurities. Anyways good luck.
But how would he make HCL acid?
That's amazing - I'm impressed by your perseverence and even more impressed at how much of an achievement humanity made making optically clear glass
