Just did this last night, no need to remove the intake. I used a spark plug socket with a swivel, made the install go much better. By the way did not drop the plugs down the hole. Load each one in the socket and slowly lower them down and screw them in hand tight to start. Outside of that this video is pretty good.
You’re full of shit. Just did my plugs. The back right side (passenger side) plug can’t be accessed unless the intake manifold is removed. In fact, you can’t even see the plug unless the intake is moved aside.
@@vstar7196 3” extension with a magnetic plug socket for the back plugs. I had to connect/disconnect the socket from the extension for the last two during the removal/install which was a tiny bit tricky to finesse for clearance, but it was still quick and easier than removing the plenum. You don’t need to see the spark plugs as long as you’re careful placing them in and threading.
Awesome explanation. I remember on previous years vehicles with a v-6 engine you had to loosen the motor mount and tilt the engine forward to get access to the back spar plugs
I appreciate the video and information on the rear spark plugs. I was searching for a while on the internet but couldn't really find no good video at all you are the best thank you, man
I watched this video several times just to be sure I had everything I needed before I started the job. Somehow I missed the detail of a 6" extension, so I did need to run to the store for that in order to get the back 3 plugs out. I had a 10" and a 3" on hand, but the 6" was necessary for the back. Great video and you saved me a lot of time and cash.
Thanks man. I couldn’t find any help for this model at all. This is the only video that helped, I appreciate it. Straight to the point, step by step thanks man
Thanks man, ppl were saying you had to do a valve cover gadget job to access the rears. Also nother guy said you have to loosen the motor mount to tilt the engine forward then ratchet strap it in place. BS. Thanks for the video man. Hate trolls.
Very nice video, no bs, straight forward with no fluff. The trolls with dropping your plug in, I didn't see you do it. Putting the plugs in with rubber tubing is the best way though.
I'm on my 3rd impala, more that 230K miles on the first, 80K on the second before it was totaled. It was really easy to change plugs on the pre 2016's 3.5L by pulling the engine forward, only had to remove one bolt. These are really really reliable cars, Good video as I'm changing the plugs at 125K miles on the 3.6L.
I was thinking I was ready to do this after work but after watching your video I'm in so much need of a magnetic tool grabber. thank you so much you saved me hours of what to do's if i couldn't get the plugs out.
Super easy luckily I work in a body shop so I was able to borrow everything you used the back left one under that wire was tight but I got it. Thanks a lot saved me $300 bucks
Thanks for taking the time to help others by creating and posting this video, I can't see why others are criticizing carefully dropping the plugs in place, I really don't think that will change the gap that easily. I myself would probably use a spark plug socket with the rubber boot inside but that's me working on my own car and taking my time while not doing a video. Thanks again.
Thanks for this vid, for the first time ever I did my own spark plugs, this POV style camerawork was a big help to visualize how to get the back 3 plugs out.
Great video. Ignore the "don't drop a plug" critics, while they may be right, I think you just kind of settled it gently in there, lol. The main thing is - you showed the method, and that saved a ton of time and money. Nice job!
Only an idiot without any training drops plugs . Been a mechanic for 28 years and never drop a plug in but have had customers drop them and they wonder why its misfiring. Even shade tree mechanics wont drop plugs in the hole .
Gotta say I'm very impressed with how you did this. I just purchased a 2007 G6 GTP with the 3.6 engine. Although I'm not gone be doing plugs myself. Paying someone $50 dollars to do them. But I do know if ever want to save that $50 now I can do it myself.
Y're the man, thanks buddy. U R so professional! I did the same for my honda pilot [no intake removal]. When I took it to the shop, tech. insisted that no way except to remove the intake and will cost $350 cuz "alot of works"... LOL!! It costed me $33 plugs and tools within 1.5hr to finish (first time)...
Excellent video and clear understanding of what you were doing in changing the spark plugs....I have an old body style 2014 Impala limited LTZ 3.6 and I looked at the back side of the engine near the firewall and it looks like enough clearance to remove the coil packs and plugs just as you did without removing the intake manifold, I have not done this yet but have 94,000 miles on it and may even wait until 99-100,000 miles before I change them....Thanks for the video.
I'd say this is the BEST video I've seen on removing the coil packs and the plugs - great job. You think the gap is going to change when the plug is dropped into the recess? NEVER in hell! "Auto Rex," best damn video I've seen - keep it up! Thanks.
Thank you so much just did my 2012 Malibu I appreciate all your help. check engine light came on went to AutoZone misfire on number four.six new plugs and the car hasn’t run this smooth in a long time was lucky enough to have the old spark plug socket with the rubber boot inside held the plugs fine
I am incredibly grateful for all of the requests asking me to create a Patreon page. It is very humbling to me that so many of you want to support this channel and help it grow. So, I've finally created one! www.patreon.com/AutoRex
Very helpful video, just add a magnetic 5/8 spark plug socket (autozone $6.99) for the old plugs out and new in, and pull the red clip and push the white part and remove the brake booster line which snaps right back on after
I have 09 Saturn Aura XR with the same engine. I paid a local shop $600 to replace the plugs and coil packs at 120K miles because I was told that the intake had to come off. Fast forward a few years and another 100K miles. Car started misfiring under load. Watched your video and even though the Aura is a bit more cramped and I had to pull a couple evap lines had them all changed (plugs and coils) in about an hour. Looks like the shop that did it last time didn't change the packs (it still had the originals even though they charged me for new) and screwed up the plug gaps as well. No two were alike, with a variance of over .015 from the least to most. Never going back there again.
so I changed the spark plugs already!!! the most challenging one was the one from back that is in the driver's side, but got to it, and In barely posting cause I also changed the oil, once again thank you for the video, and keep coming with those videos of the impala please
Thanks for the video. Saved me some time & extra work. I put my anti seize on mine cause when I had my 2003 chevy malibu. I couldn't get them out but I guess your only suppose to put anti seize on when you got aluminum heads. Oh well,it's done & has more power. Hopefully she last another year or so
Fantastic Video! Really appreciate your tutorial and efforts!! Was quoted approximately the same $500 and was reluctant to try this repair due to having to remove the intake. Believe i will now give it a shot wven with my limited mechanical skills🤙
Good video. But a few things to remember. Never drop a plug in. Changes the gap by hitting the head. Also, if someone were to buy iridium plugs -these types of plugs are pregapped (Common choice). So by dropping the plugs in like that ruins them and they will need replaced.
Great video!!.step by step awsome.I've seen other videos where they loosen the motor mount and tilt the engine to get better access to the rear spark plugs. Its good to know that wont be necessary.Thank's
thanks for the video buddy!!! I've been searching a video for my 2013 impala never found one, great video man and any fixes you do to the impala, try to put the video, maybe it'll help me down the road, great video and subscribed!!
Great Video. Currently have the car (2011 Lacrosse CXS) at the mechanic and it's going to cost $636 to change all 6 plugs. I hope they are are replacing the air filter too??? I'm 72 and not mechanically inclined and don't have any of the tools.
Thank you for the tips. Do not forget to put dielectric grease on the boots and I use anti seize, always on the plugs threads.Just old school here.Done in less then an hour.
That's a good thing to do, but I always wonder if the factory during installation of the spark plugs uses anti seize on the plug threads, if not 90,000 to 100,000 miles before replacing the plugs.
Wonderful video, it saved me a lot of time. Would you happen to have a video or know how to test the coils? I noticed that there are 4 pins and I have only ever seen 2. Any advice would be appreciated.
I had to remove intake because of the coil on #2 cyl wouldnt come out ( 2014 impala new body style) because the throttle was in the way. Still.. i went into this with alot more confidence. Thanks
I would add: Grease the threads on the new plugs before inserting. You can get a $1 packet at your parts store and it will last several changeouts. Very helpful vid.Thanks.
You should NEVER put grease on spark plug threads. Per NGK doing so will "reduce the frictional forces that the threads face." In will cause the torque readings to be inaccurate resulting in over tightening by up to 20% causing distortion of the plug and possible breakage or cracking. You can verify my statement by Googling if you should put grease on the spark plug threads.
Just changed the plugs, and thanks for the tips. Went easily, but i used a 3/8 dia rubber hose to drop the plugs in 3, 5 cyclinder. My 6" extension and 5/8 sparkplug socket with spark plug didnt have enough room with the firewall and vacuum lines. But thanks again for sharing this technique.
2017 Impala... I had to loosen the intake, remove the throttle body, air filter, and ERG valve. The #1 spark plug is stuck under the intake and not removable with it there😢
air filter is easy and so is cabin air filter; go to 1A on youtube it shows you, and Autozone can help find right part needed for cabin air filter and engine air filter too.
I had my spark plugs changed for my 2013 impala by a local mechanic and he loosened the intake to get to the back spark plugs. After changing them and torqueing the intake bolts in, the car started fine but the next day when i started driving again everytime i give it light class when accelerating from a complete stop it makes a mild ticking noise. Could this be a sign of poor spark plug installation? The ticking sound only comes when I accelerate on local roads, not when i’m idling or driving on the freeway
Thank you so much for this for this video ! For the very last spark plug you did (back plugs) did you disconnect the cable that was sort of blocking it?
Trying to help out my gf's grandma and change the plugs on her 14 impala with a 3.6. Has a different intake and can't even see the far passenger side coilpack. Hoping i don't have to take off the intake but currently not sure yet.
Thanks for the vid. However, I tend to use the magnet want to reinsert the new plugs and start a slight turn. Wouldn’t recommend dropping them in the chambers.
Will this procedure also work for a 2007 Saturn Aura with the same 3.6 V6? Will there be different or additional interference for the back plugs on Aura? I appreciate any feedback!
Saturn Aura same car, so should be the same. Shouldn't have to tilt the motor. Easier to get to plugs? Maybe, but 10 times the effort of just fishing the plugs out from the area.
Best mechanic tutorial ive seen. straight forward, not alot of bs. Well done!

If you don't use a swivel there probably wouldn't be enough clearance to remove and replace with plugs in socket.
