- It stopped raining for a few seconds so I was forced to make a helpful informative video for a change instead of making fun of astronomy dorks.

Since I discovered your channel, I’ve been binge-watching a ton of past episodes. Much of the content on TH-cam feels overly contrived but you’re a genuinely funny dude. I’m also very high right now. 😐 Great job with the channel - keep it up. 👍🏼 You’re one of the select few channels I hit the 🔔 for. ✨🔭
Thanks for the tips, Dylan! Now, all I need is a video tutorial on affording narrowband filters :)
The struggle is real :)
The ZWO filter set is not to bad to learn with at all and not to expensive, especially used... I am still learning narrowband but I can say with a fair degree of confidence that there is a learning curve with narrowband and post-processing those images that it is worth getting a decent starter set like the ZWO and mastering them as it will take awhile to get it down where it would be worth the more expensive ones... I find many things in Astrophotography are like that - build your confidence and skill set with decent used or starter equipment and once your ready and understand what it does so you can actually "squeeze more out of it", upgrade - one great thing about the hobby is the stuff holds it's value pretty good and there is always a demand for used.
I heard the opt triad ultra filter is pretty good. I checked it out and the good thing is that opt does financing so like 25 dollars a month or something like that.
Thanks Dylan, the Raid Shadow bit cracked me up. I need to get some filters back in my life.....and an ED refractor back in my life too!
I wanted to say I just saw you on a TV program called My way and looked you up on you tube. Your pictures are amazing, I took my kids to a star gazing night and we got to enjoy using other peoples hi tech telescopes. It was a magical night. We saw the Moon and Saturn so close up it was amazing. I'm definitely going to subscribe to your channel as my kids are obsessed with planets. Thank you.
Hey good to meet you :) I’m glad you saw the broadcast ! Welcome to the club :)
Great trick about nuking the magenta stars, thats a new one on me. I enjoy the rainbow look too, though I'm pretty awful w/ PS and have been doing those tweaks in PI via the mask generation under utilities. Theres RGB/CMY presets, but you can adjust the strength/range of them to mask out and boost certain parts of the image in curves. Note: dont SCNR your image or you lose some of that range (though absolute invert and fix stars). Can be super tedious, but it works. Your method is a lot more straightforward though, I'll have to give it a try. Thanks for the vid!
Yes thanks for the tips. On another note, my work asked for my favorite quote for our webpage, I was like "Always remember life is meaningless and we are all going to die" I don't think it was what they were looking for. :)
Thanks Dylan for the tips especially that image invert for star color. Cool idea!
No worries Ray mate!
No matter when or where i'm at, I see Dylan posts new video, I watch it straight away. Great one as always, Dylan!
High praise ! :)
I like to take my SHO data and add it back in photoshop as separate layers. You can change them to screen mode and colorize them. With each one independent you can tweak the colors as much as you want and not lose data. It tends to throw off the star color though, so masking it out or hitting it with the Camera Raw filter helps a lot.
Yeh I tweak the levels per channel too which is destructive but helps pull things into line also.
Nice one Dylan! Really enjoyed the troubleshooting part at the end with list of what is wrong with the image and why it is there :)) rare to see that!
Thanks! I think I’ll do it more often because most of the time we spend time hiding the problems instead of highlighting them to learn.
@@DylanODonnell exactly! Newcomers get frustrated as they think that hey are the only ones with issues in their photos. Looking forward to new videos!
Hmmm, 3am, still jumped on the notification ! Great video dylan !
You’re a true friend of the show.
Interesting video. I have to watch this again after i drink my cofee. I am glad to see i am not the only one with a bad hair day!
Hehe what’s a brush?
@@DylanODonnell it is a tool that you can use it to paint. I manage to paint with out brushes also. Check my paintings on instagram. I do have much more art on my facebook profile. instagram.com/ioan_nemes/
Love your videos Dylan! Very entertaining AND educational! I recently discovered your channel as I make the jump into astrophotography...thanks again!
Hey mate thanks !
Good video Dylan, awesome tip on inverting the image and applying SCNR to get rid of the magenta stars, so simple yet so effective!
for an awesome rainbow image, try the crab nebula without hue shift in sho
yobb89 so true
Thanks Dylan, for saying out loud what I have always felt privately. I don't care for Hubble Palette !!! There - I said it :)
Hi Dylan, for those of us who dont use photo shop would it be possible to do the same just in Pixinsight?
Dylan , just wondering if the meridian flip was necessary with the rasa.,?
Awesome video and image! Congrats on the tv appearance & highpoint!
Thx!
Very nice Dylan! I’ll watch you on tv Saturday... as always nice tutorial and love the rain ☔️ at the end... have a good one
Thanks!
6:10 that laugh..🤣😂 love it!!
Damn. Laugh reveal.
Great video as always. Anyone has a link to the TV interview?
Nice job Dylan, congrats on the tv interview, that's pretty cool!
Great video once again. I saw one of my SHO images in your google search results around 2:43 in!
Dylan! Your “weirdness” is your signature quality! Keep it up, and keep the vids coming. Excellent knowledge xfer.
The guys at Highpoint are fantastic! I've asked questions and always gotten a good answer. I now do all my purchasing from them.
Thanks for the video
Clear Skies,
God Bless
Lovely shot! And congrats on the TV appearance.
Nice video, just wondered if you could do a video like this with just photoshop? Or do you need pixinsight really?👍
Interesting Dylan 👌 the last servicing mission was in 2009...the pallet never got upgraded. It's just a narrow wavelength collector which needs various colour filters to identify really faint invisible light. You won't see true or great images from the Hubble because of this 🔭
I thought Hubble had dozens of filters? I’m sure it does ... there are loads of wavelengths to choose from in the Hubble data :) I think the palette really got popular because of pillars of creation image.
@@DylanODonnell yeah that's correct Dylan...Pillars of Creation 👍
Is there a way to do that process completely in Pixinsight? I’m still a novice at it but I don’t know if I could handle learning photoshop on top of it right now
Cool processing tips! Don't have to worry because I'm a Osc wienie! What national TV program? Will you attach a link in the future?
Hey thanks! I like a bit of OSC myself :) www.9now.com.au/my-way/2020/clip-ck75oftz9000i0hp2xdnlgufc
@@DylanODonnell thanks for the link Dylan. It does not work outside of Australia apparently. Oh well. C
Clear skies Mate!
Elmiko L damn. I shoulda been sponsored by a VPN company 😆
@@DylanODonnell lol! It's okay. I'm watching your NEAF video from last year. Getting my Hyperstar ready for tonight! Supposed to be clear for the rest of the week!
Just curious Dylan, what would this image look like if you took your RASA to a super dark location and use no filters? (One short color camera) I know that you have a video about how one shot color cameras are much less efficient, just referring to globe would the colours look like
I have lots of shots taken with the rasas in one shot colour :) I’m at a bortle 2 site.
Thanks Dylan that’s an interesting way of doing it. I’ve been battling with the flatness of the result of the double SCNR. My only concern with that is when I’ll do it in the process. I usually do my color correction at the end of my process after SHO combine denoise sharpening star reduction etc..
Shouldn't Ha be red and OIII be green? What would that do?
Saw the title, wondered "how will he find a way to make a funny video on this 🤔", clicked, laughed like hell before the intro music even started
Hehehe thanks mate. I think making processing videos entertaining is a huge challenge! That’s why I try to go as quickly as possible 😂
I would have assumed for narrowband the pallet would not be pure R/G/B as that is not how the eye sees those frequencies. e.g. HA is 92% red, 8% green, sulphur is 99.4% red, 0.6% green, O3 is 20% Blue, 45% Green, 35% Red, HB is 40% Blue, 40% Green, 20% Red, meaning there is more of that vibrance by not being a single colour per chemical but rather normalizing it to how the eye would see that light.
Haha love this! Happy Mardi Gras! Definitely going to try this out on some of my data :)
Thanks Stacey! Got lots of good feedback on your last cameo by the way :)
Ah that’s always nice to hear! :) thank you for asking me again :)
Although I understand the scientific reasoning behind the Hubble pallette, I have never been a big fan of the look.
I think its ugly, but yup.... its utility is false color imaging
I so need to get PHD / guiding setup for my mount "ZEQ25 Ioptron" I can get a solid 3 min with no star shift. I am mostly shooting with fast canon L glass / DSLR, but I am at the limit of what I can get with DSLR. Have you tried any of the raspberry pi / PHD setups? I so want something easy "no laptop" guider, as I have not jumped into laptop / CCD / yet...
Sry I’m a laptop guy all the way! So much cool stuff to try.
@@DylanODonnell So, true, and some day I will take that plunge... Thx for the amazing work...
Something else to try, Dylan. Couldn't you just turn down the amount slider on the SCNR tool when reducing the green on the main (not the inverted) image? I've done that in the past with good results. 65 - 85% depending on the object seems to do it. I would appreciate your thoughts.
Yes that’s a good way too! It’s destructive so using layers gives you more control to tweak as you like later though.
Great ideas, thanks, but your hairstyle changes from a late night of capture to the channel 9 segment, lol. Excellent stuff 👍
I shall fire my continuity coordinator immediately.
I've been pondering how I feel about the sometimes liberal colour application some people use for their images. Is there such thing as documenting what is actually out there and is it art in applying your own flavour to what you capture and with how much post processing one does? Or is applying colour in this way something the should be done because the light captured just isn't as interesting? Purest V Artist? I'm yet to be able to start capturing the good nebulae so am yet to decide what direction to take.
It’s a good concern. With narrowband I feel the best result is one that highlights the different channels because that is a truth (chemistry) which is why the overuse of SCNR makes the images flat to me. It’s flat enough in true colour RGB where Ha dominates. I have a colour primer video if it helps.
Isn't an OSC camera taking "what I see is what you get"? But even with OSC, can't one split the colors into channels and basically mod them out of reality? There was a recent YT vid on what wives know, and one item that caught my eye was the pink-sorta shirt the comic was wearing. He told the audience he bought it because it was pink, but the wife said it's hibiscus. Another example of SHO gone awry.
What a wonderful advertisement for one-shot colour 😊
Try that with OSC for 63 minutes under a half phase moon and see how you go ;)
tried high point scientific a few weeks ago and they don't ship over here
Now I get you, O'Donnell!
That Carl Orff "Carmina Burana - O Fortuna" medieval poem-set-to-music thing you like to spin for the reveal, almost exactly means: "Everything is meaningless. And we're all going to die"
Check it out (yeah, loose translation):
"Yo, fortune, like the moon you're undependable; always waxing and waning.
(Your) shitty little life first weighs you down then comforts (you.)
Fantasize all you want, (but) poverty and power will melt you like thin ice.
Fate (you) monstrous, vacuous, orbiting circle (galaxy), you are evil.
Health is vanity and always fades to nothing, shadowed and eclipsed."
Word.
Love to see you do a tut on how to do hub palette on a quad filter with osc. Please?
Loved the video Dylan not a big fan of pixinsight however but what you can do with it makes it look simple.
I don't know Dylan, national television, it could change you... I mean look what that small exposure has done to your hair! 🤯
only kidding, good luck Dylan especially with the TV, another great vid, hope to see more. give Brain Cox a run for his money!
cheers 👍
Haha yeh all the drugs and fame have put my hair out.
If I ever make the move to pixinsight for narrowband this video will come In handy. Nice effect Dylan!
Was that chanting/singing clip from 300?
Thx! O Fortuna .. it’s in a lotta stuff :)
Well done. Really creative processing tips Dylan - I like that. - Cheers.
In Astrophotography stacking images and using filters is kind of necessary however if you start adding false colour to your image or start reducing stars or start removing objects, that is the time you are no longer Astrophotographer.
You lose your status there... The moment your image enters Photoshop, you become a Photoshoper and not Astrophotographer.
Keep things simple and natural.
I can't get enough of your humor 🤣
I’ll tell my wife :)
what brand filters are you using dylan?
Baader high speed :)
I actually like the Hubble palette. It tends to show a lot of detail . Even if it is a little greeny.
Just seen you on TV haha. Waiting for my new Scope
Haha great !
Is there going to be another event at Byron?

The video is not downloadable, first time, why?
You download em? Cool :) I have no idea why. Try changing the domain to TH-campp.com and follow the prompts
@@DylanODonnell It has always worked before, once downloaded they work for a couple of days if one is offline, you must have clicked something when posting this vid on TH-cam. I don't have internet at home so I download what I want to see that evening
was that sleet??.. sorry that wasn't the only thing i took from the video :)
Congrats on the TV exposure!

Again no download possibility :-(
I was looking for this only sho editing
Hahaha, the mardi gras comment half way through 🤣🤣 so good. Love your humor.
😂 What the hell was that Kermit the frog clip from?
....you are a SCT-plate rubber person....me too....but still I get OCD about destroying the plate coating....you not?
Everything will degrade over time but you gotta clean gently !
2 things:
1. Can't you make the narrowband colors any color you want it to be even though it won't be true?
2. I get what you mean by people in nsw(at least where I used to be) to be more open minded, lol.
1. If you consider that what you perceive as "colour" is just an arbitrary distinction in your brain, no colour is "true" .. they are just frequencies we perceive or not. So what's important is noticing the differentiation between frequencies. The colour is an illusion. :)
Dylan O'Donnell just like everything else. Lol
Just don't run scnr on 100% and stretch red and blue channels separately after that.
You did this vid a few months back, so of course you can no longer remember it (wait, that would be my problem). I am not good enough to do NB, and mostly I cannot process well enough to deserve to do it. However, I'm going to start trying to do it, just like I am now starting to "try" to learn Pixinsight without having majored in it in college. Why? Because it bugs me to keep seeing photos from people with same scope as me (RASA 8) get photos with better resolution. If I couldn't be born wealthy, I should have, as compensation, been born with the ability to get PixInsight. But little luck there either.
Dylan, can you make a Video about (Fake)HST Palette with RGB Data? Pleaaaaaaaaase
cool intro but subbed for that outro
Glad you liked it !
That's really cool Dylan. Love the image. My problem is that I only learned Pixinsight and don't know dick about photoshop. I use the color mask script to get mine that way. That Rosette you did is great. Sean
PS Issac at Highpoint is the Greatest
yes
Great one Dylan
I hate the horrible space telescope palette :). Don't understand why people just don't try to reproduce the original colors of the objects, subtle as they are. If you want ugly colors, try HSO, or whatever other order. Very often a bichromy OIII Ha gives a much more natural looking image...
I got really scared when you mentioned raid shadow legends xD
00:01 Is a Davie504 reference?
I’ve been trying to think of a collective noun for my audience for ages but star stuffers just sounds a bit sexual heh
Good stuff
Mate, how on earth can you own an IT company, and still have time to make these videos? Also, brownie points for getting yourself on channel 9!
I’ve bought gear from HighPoint; expensive gear, and they have NOT been helpful w/ small or big problems. Will not buy from them anymore.
Looking for vomiting Kermit on TH-cam now...

Just ask Chuck, he'll teach you! :p
Gotta love the gay rainbow effect. Great video!
Love your vids, your intro is kick but.
Thx mate :) sitting down years ago and spending a whole day editing that 19.7 seconds really changed the whole vibe and level of the channel !
Dylan O'Donnell Once you’re done rambling on and your intro starts, I always crank the volume and totally head bang for a bit LOL!
Happy Madigras Dylan! Lmaoo
Nice. Oh I see, you comb your hair for National TV, but go with the wacky Scientist looks on here.
Don’t judge me 😂
Very nice 👍
So you're just showing how to photoshop fake pictures of space here in this video?
Yeh nasa pays me to keep you in the dark.
@@DylanODonnell So you're knowingly and willingly taking part In deception so that you can get paid from NASA... Well I guess a lot of people are getting rich around the world that way these days... . But you should know your selling your soul to the devil. You're gonna have to stand before a judge. It's gonna be terrifying and you will fall and you will tremble in fear. You better rethink your life and your eternity before it's too late.
