      Robin's Cup of Tea :Could you please let me know; does it soak in well? I've been wanting to try a new one and I've heard good things about this except for "soak-in" factor. Thank you!

      Mel Swenson yes it does! Not too fast that it does anything but fast enough. It has a super faint smell. Kind of like really clean soap.

      It soaks in well for me, but I do have very dry skin. I think it's definitely worth a try!

    Can you do a retinol 101 video?! All about how they work, how to use them? I'm 26 and just started using then in the summer but am not sure that I'm seeing the results because I have a hard time with the peeling. Thank you! You're a star! ;)

      I use retinols on and off (normally for about 2-3 months and then have a break for about a month) I have used them for a couple of years. The best way to start off is to start with a low % (.2%)and for the first couple of weeks just use it once or twice a week and gradually build up over a few months (or when you have used the first tube/container up). Then go up to the next % (normally 0.5%) and build up again and then go up to 1% if you go in with a high % straight off you and your skin isn't use to it you could get adverse reactions. Also you can use a moisturiser after using the retinol but you need to wait 20-30 mins after using the retinol. One of the best retinols I have used is Skinceuticals (I have used some others which were good also) I have just bought the Pestle & Mortar Superstar so am looking forward to seeing what that is like and am also using the Alpha H overnight peel which has 0.5% retinol in it (you only use that twice a week at most so will use my other retinol items other days) TBH I only use retinol at most 5 days a week. TBH the worst retinol product I used was the Paulas Choice 1% of which I saw no improvement and thought it was a waste of money (although quite a few people say they like it BUT like most things some things one person like another doesn't Lol) I am 48 years young and am forever being told that I look nowhere near my age, have a glow and asked why I don't have any wrinkles Lol. I put it down to good skincare, family genes and retinol Lol. I hope what I wrote has helped (even though you wrote this question a couple of months ago) and you and everyone else has a good result from retinol (even tho I am not the goddess Caroline Lol) x

    • @liverpool2sex
      @liverpool2sex 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      One thing I forgot to add is ALWAYS use an SPF when using retinol (even when cloudy and/or in the winter etc) I use an SPF 30 or 50 every day (on top of my moisturiser) x

    Caroline, I've been studying the science behind skincare and my skincare routine includes a full arsenal of ingredients: retinol (prescription Tretinoin), vitamin c, citric acid, AHAs, and BHAs. There's such a craze these days to layer multiple products, so I've researched layering ingredients and read not to mix most of them because one ingredient can cancel out another.
    So, I use like-ingredients together and alternate them, mornings and evenings. For example, I use products with vitamin c (serums and creams) on Monday mornings and then in the evening, I'll use my prescription retinol, and on Tuesday mornings I'll use products with AHAs and then in the evening I'll use either Sunday Riley's Luna oil or Paula's Choice Clinical 1% Retinol Treatment...etc. (I'm still working up to seven nights a week on the prescription-strength retinol, so I use my prescription retinol Monday, Wednesday, and Friday, and then alternate Luna and Paula's Choice on the other days.)
    In all my research, I'm most confused about the serums and moisturizers I can use with retinol. So far, the only moisturizer I have found that is just a pure, no-frills moisturizer is CeraVe Moisturizing Cream. In the evening, I'll wash my face and then apply the retinol product, then follow it up with CeraVe.
    So...here are my questions:
    1) How can I effectively layer the ingredients on my list and/or alternate them? In other words, is what I'm doing making sense, or am I being a crazy person? :)
    2) What are the best serums and moisturizers to use with my retinols?

  • @patsywaxy

    Hi Caroline, can you make a video on skincare routine especially how you would incorporate vitamin c, all the different acids and retinols for morning/night/day/week please? I get confused what can/can't be used together.

    Would love to see a post or video about retinol. The ways to use it in routines and when to start using it etc. I am kind of toying with the idea of starting using it (I'm 20 with bad hormonal break outs and scars) but am unsure. Thank you so much for your fabulous content! I am a big fan of your blog and cannot wait to see what you produce over the next few months x

    I am not a commenter usually - but... have been watching you for almost two years! Don't get me started on the admiration level, not just on the professional, but on a human level! With TH-cam turning into a bit of a circus act, having strong, yet KIND & honest women like you, Ruth, Stephanie and a few others is intellectual oxygen! Can't express how wonderful it is to have you back - just binged on both favorites and empties videos :)!!! Can't wait for more... I have a gazillion questions always, and most get answered eventually. If they don't, I will try to get the nerve to ask and do my best to comment more because you deserve all the love and praise ... and then some! Of course my skin thanks you but even more so, my soul does! I am not in the beauty industry and can barely afford most products to be honest (who am I kidding - I am a concert pianist living in NYC, I cannot afford it, but I use the "you live once" excuse to pretend I can)... but you make everyone feel like they can be a part of your world, with knowledge, approachability, dignity, humor and a generous spirit! I am sorry for the gushing, but I had to!
    Oh - just picked up the Double Cleanse finally - really enjoying it!!! And now that both you and Stephanie like the Belif cream, I will have to invest in the big size when it's time to get a moisturizer. Have used up two mini sizes, which were Sephora perks and really enjoyed it :). Ok, I will shut up! Have a great day :)

Also trying to fit Differin or azelaic acid in to the regime. Are the above alternated a complete over kill? Which ones should I ditch? Thanks and much love x

    Neostrata is a drugstore derm brand here n Canada. They have the highest % of retinol among derm brands. I got extremely dry under eye area because of their retinol serum. It emphasised the wrinkles which I never had before. Caroline, is there a way back from mistake with retinol?

      @Aristailfly I just read your comment and I think this has happened to me? What exactly happened to your skin as a result of using rentinol that is concerning you? I hope you don't mind me asking you... I'm using Paula's Choice 1 % retinol and some wrinkles just under my eye look worse? Also, I'm from Canada too... Montreal.

    • @Aristaifly
      @Aristaifly 7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Marisa Reese thank you for asking of course I don't mind! I feel mad at myself because I actually never needed retinol in the first place. I just turned 30 and dryness, parchment-like skin and real wrinkles all of these was my gift to myself for my birthday (stupid me!). I swear, retinol showed me how I will look like when I turn 55. I take really good care of my skin and there are ups and downs but this is just awful. I stopped using it after 5-7 times and it has been a month and I still cannot recover. This is why I asked about a way back from it. I talked to the Neostrata trainer and she said that I'm too see-thru and retinol products are not for me (I'm not originally from Canada and saw many people more pale than me) but there were not suggestions how to get back. I didn't have a habbit to look at myself in the mirror too often but now I meet myself in the mirror only for skincare routines, I don't look closely while brushing teeth or drying hair I get upset everytime. I guess it shows that product actually works but it is definitely not for everyone.

    • @lavendardreams5960
      @lavendardreams5960 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for your response. I understand it must be difficult to see issues that were not there suddenly be there, especially in your attempt to help your skin. I'm not an expert... Caroline is so she can definitely address how to reverse. However, it's my understanding that when you stop using retinol eventually it goes out of the skin. Keep your skin moisturized as much as possible... it will get back to the way it was before. You're so right some ingredients, even good ones, are not for everyone. We must listen to our bodies/skin. Thanks again for your answer.

    Caroline can you do a video for the ladys in their 20s.. like the necessities? I'm 24 and would really like some direction in what products and kinds of products I should be using at my age because I know it gets more extensive with age or is it pretty much the same ?

    So helpful. I'm new to retinol so I think Differin is a good place to start. I don't have acne issues but I'm trying to build up my tolerance for anti aging products. I can get it really easily in the States.

    I have to agree about that Neostrata retinol. I've been using Retinol reform retinol serum for years. Had one night with the neostrata and my cheeks dried up and broke out. Thankfully my biologique recherché creme dermopurifiante heeled them up in 2 days, but boy is that stuff strong.

      Caroline Hirons hi Caroline. The Neostrata you linked is the 0.5% Retinol. Is this not the same one you used? Are you using a 2% one? I can't find it anywhere. Thanks x

    I would LOVE to see a longer video on building up retinoids usage. I didn't realise I should be using it daily already! I use it only occasionally (except DDG Retinol+ferulic under eye cream, which is about 5 days a week)

    I've been using the nip & fab extreme pads for a few months now and LOVE them but feel I need something with a bit more oooomph. What would be the next best thing to try that is reasonably priced? X

    • @ladyflimflam
      @ladyflimflam 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Claire Simonds Pixi has some peel pads that are 20%. $22, maybe $25 at Target for 60 pads.

    • @jenjayne4450
      @jenjayne4450 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I know you weren't asking me but the Pixi Glow Peel Pads are very good if you want to stick to an acid in a pad form and keep the cost down.
      If you want the same sort of product but in a different form then go with the Ordinary's Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2% or the 10% option which both cost less than $7.00 US.
      Or you can try the BR Lotion P50 like Caroline has posted about in her face acid video on TH-cam. The P50 is more expensive, however it will last longer than the pads.
      All my other suggestions are more expensive. Dennis Gross Alpha Beta peel pads are pricey but excellent.
      Sunday Riley Good Genes is my personal favorite and people are selling their sample packets on ebay for around $20. Its a great deal....trust me....
      I own all of these acids I have mentioned because I have a problem with purchasing and trying everything Caroline suggests...lol

    • @Future-zx9ts
      @Future-zx9ts 7 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Claire Simonds ok, not so reasonably priced, but the Dr Dennis Gross Alpha Beta peels are out of this world. Also, Pixi makes some awesome 20% pads that are fabulous and wonderfully priced (those you wipe on and then rinse off, the Dr Gross you don't. It's 2-steps).

    Guess who's back? Back again! YASSS! Quick question if you get chance to get around to it (at my wits end) just been prescribed 5% benzoyl peroxide for moderate chin acne (delightful) skin is already very dry and have rosacea. Do I use until skin is clearer and then re hydrate?! GP wasn't overly clear on usage etc X

      Rachel Bridgewater Hi, an SPF is a must with products like BP! You need something very emollient/moisturising to keep your skin comfortable. If you don't moisturise at all your skin will freak out and produce more oil. Check Carolines blog. Wayne Goss has a video on it too.

    HI Caroline!
    I have recently started watching your channel, and I have to say it is one of my favourites since the content is so interesting. I watched the video you did on fractional, and I wondered if you would be able to do a video on the laser, or a comparisson between both of them. I have had a very agressive acne and for sure I now have lots of scars and I would really enjoy watching which are my options so that I can do the best choice based on what is better for each case.
    thank you lots!!

    Hey Caroline, it is so good to see you back. Looking forwards to lots more informative Skincare videos (would love some vlogs too!) - I have a question, how does Differen (Adapalene) compare to Retinol 1% ? I have been using Paulas Choice 1% Retinol Booster which is perfect for my oily skin and my concerns are acne and aging (I'm 35) I have ordered Differn through Boots Online clinic (I'm in the UK) and wanting to fit it into my routine. Any advice on using Differen in a Skincare routine with Salicylic Acid, Niacinamide, Hyaluronic Acid and Vitamin C would be much appreciated. Xxx
