    The ideal configuration is to put some U12Ts in your ears, connected to the music, and put your ANC headphones over top of them with ANC turned on. Very quiet, great music.

    If you intend to use the plane's entertainment system (to watch movies etc.), you can't use high sensitivity iem's (basically all of them). You might be ok for movies, but as soon as the cabin crew or captain make announcements (all the time), the volume is super boosted and will be ear piercingly (and damaging) loud. I bring a set of cheap, foldable and comfortable on ears and use them for plane entertainment (Koss Porta Pros). I use my iem's for everything else not plugged into the plane.

    For some reason, one of my favorite sounding devices are the Galaxy Buds Plus (with a lot of EQ going on using wavelet). I have much more expensive gear of all shapes and sizes but seems like I've found the sound that hits home with those in that specific configuration. Next time I am flying I will be using these and on top of those my Sony XM4s for the ANC.

    Eytmotic IEMS have incredible isolation from outside sound. The flange tips beat pretty much all noise cancellation headphones. If you can stand the tips that is. I found the best isolation comes from getting the foam tips deep in your ear. Get the best sound quality from the flange tips.

    • @metal571
      @metal571 2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      This doesn't cancel noise at lower frequencies however which ANC is superior for

    • @marksafe5463
      @marksafe5463 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@metal571 agreed! This is because lower frequencies are stronger and The best way to combat that is a cancellation of those sound waves. Only certain ANC headphones seem to do this well. Bose over ears are great for this I think because they are built for flights. Ear plugs from Eytmotic soften those Engine sounds (from machinery and vehicles)better probably because those ANC headphones aren’t quick enough to produce those opposing higher frequencies.

    • @marksafe5463
      @marksafe5463 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I guess lower frequencies don’t bother me as much has the mid range and higher frequencies.

    • @metal571
      @metal571 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      For planes etc you will want the active cancellation for lower frequency rumble but I will never argue with the amazing effectiveness of Etys and their passive higher frequency cancelation since it is of course excellent

  • @hartyewh1
    @hartyewh1 2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    I'd like to see you guys go head to head on a headphone/IEM you disagree on and try to hash it out with song tests etc. Seeing that interraction might reveal some of your approaches and thought in a way that's hard to get at without contrasting with someone.

  • @fishinthejar

    A simple yet very enjoyable collab. I'd love to grab the QC45 for my office/commute but the fact I can buy Sundaras at this price point scares me...

  • @hartyewh1
    @hartyewh1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    There's another ultra niche topic: what headphones/IEMs are best on a plane. Isolation is one thing, but the pressure changes really can change the sound. One of my best listening sessions in a long time was listening to Toehider with Sennheiser Momentum TWS 2's, which I don't really like in general. There it was just fantastic for some reason.

  • @jeffscalfano3100
    @jeffscalfano3100 ปีที่แล้ว

    Sennheiser momentum 3rd generation earbuds are a must add to the travel pack. Out of about 13 pair of earbuds they are my favorite sounding with great features.

    I've been flying with CIEM for almost a decade all around the world. While they don't block 100% of the sound, they block more than enough to sleep comfortably.
    U12t is great, but prefer the UM MEST Mk2 as the are a better all arounder.

    "Potential Engine Failure" - yes that happened to me when I was wearing my Bose QuietComfort 20. An engine on my flight caught fire and caused a loud whine but I didn't know about it until I started smelling a burnt smell in the cabin.

    DMS and Andrew chatting like old time buddies talking about their hobbies, doesn't get any better than that! I can respect Bose as a brand to eliminate outside engine noise to hear your gear. So cool you own the Nintendo Switch, is it the regular model or the OLED model? DMS are you aware that they are selling the steam deck? It looks like the Switch, but it can play PC games as long as you have a steam account.

      It's not for me at the moment as I think the treble is a bit sharp, but it's something they may improve with firmware. They're very intentional about target compliance, so I imagine they'll want to curb that a bit.

    Best way to listen to music on a plane or train. NC over ears - Bose, Sony whatever really - then use IE600 underneath. I do this when travelling on the noisy parts of the London Underground where background noise can sometimes go up to 100dB!!!

    I DIYed myself some custom in ears and they sound great and block out noise better than the air pod pros. Didn’t try the Bose, so cannot compare. It’s not for everyone, you’ll easily spend a thousand for the tools you need and it took me over a year until I got something that was good.

From my experience NC headphones pretty much always have better ANC than the iems. Might be worth trying the sennheisers if you’re looking to get better sound quality.
