New to 7DTD, If you plant trees directly in the ground in the desert the trees will grow stunted but if you plant them in a farm plot the trees think they are in there natural biome and will grow to normal height.

For anyone wondering its a 50% chance on player planted crop harvest to get a seed back. If you want to be a farmer its a 7 point dip to be maxed out in living off the land and jts a viable strat early on. Good food has its benefits. This test was ran with 10 crop plots, but for expansion purposes i did the math when this change was first implemented and you only need 8 crop plots to always have a surplus of crops and enough seeds for replanting/expansion. I find 8 is the magic number for 1 person and even with that you end up with more crops than you. The boots are actually the largest benefit as you'll receive on average 1 extra seed when doing a 10 crop run with the quality 6 boots ultimately saving you 5 crops.
That being said, I find that farming is only good and late stage games or in multiplayer environments. And a late stage solo run you cut out the requirement to search for food and if you actually use super corn to create glue, you no longer have to search for glue and the same can be said for cloth if you grow cotton. For a group game it means that your minors are less likely to starve and your people going out can just eat the food they collect without actually having to use any supply from the home base. But itll take about a week to get a good sized farm growing depending on you luck with getting crops/seeds and the books for crafting seeds.

Totally right, the randomized seed drop varies wildly on small plots, so NO25 really needed to do a hundred coin flips per crop to get a sense for the effects of perks and armor. Although I love that he did a video on farming, most players and TH-camrs don't care about it, and I've always been a farmer in my playthroughs, I love it.

    • @jamestaylor9887

I typically tech into farming on any late game playthrough. No point in buying food or hopping you find it when you can sustain off vegetable soup. Meat stew is good and so is hobo stew which is typically more sustainable. Sham chowder is also nice if you get the recipe.

im a fortitude player love running tank and fist builds through t4+ pois running in with every useful consumable buff i can manage to put together a lightning speed with the super crush and punching zombies in the face is so fun plus you are so damn tanky that most zombies will hit you for 1 or 2 damage if you are using fort bites which you just auto heal back it's such an underrated tree in the game even i neglected it for a while thinking it was the worst skill in the game which now goes to perception for me. Everyone loves you in multiplayer games as you basically just conjure infinite food, drink materials, bandages and glue and can do it relatively early only needing a few farming magazines to max it out. Need a chef? no problem 90% of players take strength anyway and you are supplying the most annoying ingredients for them to actually collect so they will gladly make everything. I've had games go from we have 3 people but only have 2 bacon and eggs between us to ingredients for 60 meat stews basically overnight.

Super corn sells for 7500 dukes per stack (veggies stack to 125). Which is the main reason you grow it!
That's without any barter perks! So far super corn is the highest profit thing I've found since 1.0 dropped. Nothing stacks the cash like 50 farm plots of super corn!

Bob's Boars basement has sacks and sacks of corn seed and 3 pigs you can kill for meat, the whole POI has 8 or 9 pigs, plus a little extra (I won't plot spoil for new players, but vets will know what I mean). If you can handle the pigs very early game, then raiding just the cellar can resolve starvation issues. And are there also farming plots on the same POI? (I know there are trees in raised borders but can't remember if those are plots). If there are, all that seed plus plots to grow them in with the lotl level 1 perk is gonna give you a LOT of corncobs, probably enough to get you through that very early game subsistence battle. Now you just need a cooking pot so you can boil scavenged murky water... and yes, there's also a cooking pot in Bob's kitchen (I think it's there irrespective of your loot stage). Good ol Bob, he really did take care of his fellow man!

@brianburke808 exactly.. like he shows at the end of this video with just max lotl you get shot 63 crops and 4-8 seed on average for 10 plots at most you'd need 6 seed or 30 crops so you end up with over 30 to use per harvest.. with a good seed yield you might end up with 50 usable.
The farming outfit is sadly 100% based on the base rate so an additional 1 or 2 per harvest.. it'd be better if it was cumulative.
Either way, at level 3 living off the land you get 6 or better per harvest which is a seed +1 additional crop even without the seeds harvested. It's not as hard as it seems to have a good garden as long as you max living off the land. It's not necessary to garden and many guys I know don't... but it makes food a non issue and if you play darkness falls (if you're on pc) good food means better health and stamina

Hunt animals for meat and farm Chrysanthemums early for Grilled Meat and Red Tea (Food 6). Crafting seeds for Corn will require Seeds 18 despite how much it's used in crafting recipes.
You can then farm Yucca for Yucca Juice (Food/Seeds 8) and Blueberries for the Yucca Juice Smoothie (Food 27, Seeds 12). Remember to grab a few stacks of snow from the first layer of the Winter biome so you never have to go again.
Once you get Seeds 20 you don't need to worry about seed recipes, just the Food Crafting level and harvest gain.
Farm Mushrooms and Potatoes for the Steak and Potatoes Meal.
Live off Steak and Potatoes until you can reliably craft Hobo Stew, where you will be farming Corn, Potatoes, Yucca, and Blueberries for the food and drinks.
Until you get the ability to craft Shepard's Pie at 70, Spaghetti at 90, and Gumbo Stew at 100, that's everything you'll be living off of for the rest of the game.
You won't need the high level foods until level 100 anyway. Enjoy selling the excess crops, because you're gonna need the brass.
The crops you won't need entirely are Cotton, Goldenrod, Pumpkin, Coffee, and Hops - unless you're a Miner you'll need Coffee, and Hops if you're a fists only build.
Because a lot of the good foods require meat, you might need the animal hunting perk in the Perception tree to keep up on meat. If you're feeling brave, go to the Wasteland or Winter biomes to farm meat. Zombie Dogs and Vultures will give rotten flesh for your Hobo Stew and crop plots. You can also harvest Rotten Flesh off the corpses in POIs or randomly generated on the ground. You can't harvest zombie for flesh, I tried.
A majority of the foods can be outright skipped if you know what you're doing. Farm enough of one thing to live forever, and you never have to farm another day in your life. Take the Master Chef and LOTL perks for increased magazine chances. Higher level, better chance of getting that book. You won't get more books overall, just the ones you want.

Nicely done, thank you. Fwiw I never bother making farm plots or planting crops until I've got my 3 points in "Living off the Land", it's just not worth it until then. When they added the farmer armor I was at first afraid they had maybe also nerfed the yields without the armor so that you had to have the armor to make farming profitable. It's already hard enough to get to hobo stew. You have to find the cooking magazines to unlock the stew, you have to find the farming magazines to unlock corn/potato seed crafting, and you have to get your 3 points into living off the land to make harvesting worth while. Last thing we would need is yet another requirement to have mid-tier farmer armor ;) Can't say I'm to happy about the specialty armors. It's just like a Bethesda game where you have to haul around a bunch of wigs, glasses, necklaces, coveralls, etc. to get all the perk bufs for the different scenarios. Too much fuss for me. More power to the folk that like that level of min/max optimization.

Yeah the (No)Fun Pimps have done farming dirty. The low seed return just makes it absolutely depressing. Sure it's viable once you're fully specced out. But it's not *fun* at all. I wish the farming armor set bonus affected seed chances. Having it give you a little bump to food and drink is a weird choice. I get it, because Fortitude is the Health skill tree, and food efficiency is in there. So it makes sense if you squint at it. But like. That's not what would make the game fun, guys T-T *sigh*

What you're left with after harvesting and replanting:
    LotL 0 = -0.5 crops/plot
    LotL 1 = 1.5 crops/plot
    LotL 2 = 2 crops/plot
    LotL 3 = 4 crops/plot
    Q1 Farmer outfit+boots = +0.2 crops/plot
    Q2 Farmer outfit+boots = +0.4 crops/plot
    Q3 Farmer outfit+boots = +0.6 crops/plot
    Q4 Farmer outfit+boots = +0.8 crops/plot
    Q5 Farmer outfit+boots = +1 crops/plot
    Q6 Farmer outfit+boots = +2 crops/plot
For example you have LotL Lv.1 and no gear, you go and plant 10 seeds and 2 days later you harvest and replant them and ON AVERAGE you are left with 15 crops from that.
In the same example, having max skill and max gear, you would be left with 60 crops per harvest ON AVERAGE.

Because of that I've been planting 20 of the crops I need. It definitely becomes viable at that number. Albeit sometimes it's hard to get that many seeds to start! By the time you get to this point, you probably have a hunting system in place or something. Farming should probably be buffed. Maybe make crops cheaper for selling but grow more? Or 1-1 seed harvest. Realistically the number of seeds needs to outnumber the number of fruit though.

The armour does not seem worth while to a maxed out living off the land, at least to the point of crafting the full set.
However something I think needs to be looked at is how does a max level set of armour do with 0,1 and 2 levels of living off the land.
Funpinps do suffer from balancing things, but this is so bad I can't help but wonder if it's designed for people to be able to get into farming without much investment skill wise.
I mean with the new stuff you can get living off the land lvl 2 with only 3 points spent. 2 points on living off the land, 1 point on fortitude and the use of a fortitude mod.
I could see it being the case with the armour you can be certain to be self sustaining without needing to go fully into it which was a complaint I've heard with earlier versions.

    • @froststar11
      @froststar11 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

I was also curious about this. If you take the farming gear, throw a fortitude mod into the hat, and save yourself a few skill points that you don't have to dump directly into fortitude, but still level up living off the land to 2, does it make a difference? Would that make farming viable for someone NOT specced into Fortitude? If I'm doing an Int build, for example, could I just make myself a tier 6 set of farming gear with the aforementioned fort mod to save on spending the extra Fortitude skill points, and just put it on when I farm to activate the level two of Living Off the Land? THIS is the data I need to see, on top of the great work done in this video.

I made a reddit post on it " Farming Sustainability in V1" Where I posted a spreadsheet with my results. Lv6 gear and 1 point in LotL gives you the most bang for your buck and is only truly outdone by lv 3 LotL. You will see an improvement in lv 2 but I can't say the return for investment is worth it as you will still need to invest 2 more points and have a fortitude mod.
