I love that you still wear make-up, fix your hair, and dress cute! Living in such a small space has so many limits, but the fact that you still do these things fir yourself, shows us that you really care about yourself. You always put on a happy face! We love you! God bless!
PS, those people who tell you to clean your car need to get a life! It's your space, do as you please! 😊

This is exactly why I was attracted to this video. It’s nice to see someone look “ normal” while in a cramped space. It’s easy to let oneself go! 🤗 I think she’s awesome!

It's not that people try to be rude or hateful about the cleanliness about the car, it's the fact that the more clean it is, the less likely she will get bugs, pests, etc. and keep her more healthy. Little bit of common sense

Katie, I love how open you are about your living situation. I've been traveling for the past two years with my brother, living out of my 2007 Eclipse GT. Nothing wrong with the small cars. I call mine Pepe', the little mule. The hatch is fantastic for wrapping straps around to hold things to the top of the car. I travel with my brother so there is no sleeping in the car. We carry tents, water, food, solar panels and sleep in both national forests and on BLM land... and love this life style. Usually we travel and find places to camp near enough to a town to get a job for a little while before saving up money and moving on. Our main routes are between washington state and Quartzsite, AZ and I've never been so free in my life. Oddly, we ran into a snag this year and ended up in, of all places, The Grand Canyon! Living here is cheap as an employee... about $130 a month with everything included... almost as good as living on the road. We plan to stay another 9 months, but I can already feel the road calling me back! I do get told Im crazy for living this way, then I see the mass of bills THEY live under and just shake my head. I have no bills other than keeping up the car, insurance and keeping up my phone. Keep up the good work.

You are a real doll, a gem of a woman. I love your videos they are informative and useable. I to live in my Jetta, it's a little bit larger than your car but I'm a big guy so it works. It's a bit harder for me you see I'm in a wheelchair. I had both knees replaced a few months back. I played football in high school and college (San Jose State U.) and now am paying for those glory days. I became homeless a few months ago after I was discharged from a nursing facility and physical therapy had abruptly stopped when my insurance ran out. I found myself living in my car and not able to this day even walk to my trunk to use my wheelchair. I must ask help from passing men to help me with this. Quite a humbling experience for one who was an alpha male(but I still am)who was a damn good defensive linebacker at S.J State and avid hiker to this. It tough but I'm rolling with the punches and DO consider myself lucky and blessed compared to all the homeless people out there with no car to shelter them especially the young children. I pray for myself and them. I will carry on, I know and have hope that I will walk again soon and things will change for the better, for they must just as I know the Sun will rise every morning. I shall and will not lose faith. Please carry on with your fine videos, you are so positive and pretty as well. V.

I have 46 years long haul trucking ,living in a truck. I know about living in close quarters .The good part is that most of the time ,I had a sleeper that I could stretch out in. Always ,every day ,I could get a hot shower in a truck stop. I chose this job because I like to travel , and I got paid VERY good money for seeing a different stretch of road every day. That was my choice.. It would be a different story if it was forced on me. I do not know your reason ,but if you are happy ,that is the main thing. Try sleeping in the car parking area of Truck Stops. It is much safer ,people around 24/7 ,and help is just a scream away. one more thing-- I NEVER had as much stuff in my truck, as you have in that car. Next time you might consider a VAN. Good luck.

That's not good that you can't stretch your legs when you sleep, that's like driving and even worsens blood circulation and you need that when your body is trying to recuperate when you sleep... you should trade it in for another car... like a used Prius... you can put the seats down and lay out fully.... and you can even set up a bed or mattress in there and sleep better than those who sleep in doors if done right. I got a 2015 used Prius with 31,000 miles on it and for only $15,000... put 3,000 down and traded in the cr-v i had with another 3,000... it had wear and tear on body and 135,000 miles on that..... it works wonders. try something like this.... and you being 5'2... the back of the prius would be huge for you, at least the size of a full size bed... (I'm 5'8 and i can fit nicely but if i was taller i'd feel a little too big, but for you it'd be AWESOME!)... and I know you'd love it, it's also a hatchback like what you have already just 10x better.... heck put a casper mattress back there and enjoy the rest of 1/3 of your life spent sleeping. you only live once.... just do it.... if you do... you're welcome in advance lol. :)

Gosh Katie, you could improve your comfort and safety by investing in a used Prius or Prius V. The bed in the back with the rear seats folded forward. Your camping mat and a foam mattress can stay in place while driving suitcases in the passenger seat and misc camping gear on floor. This vehicle has so much room and the hybrid mpg is wonderful. For added security tint on the rear windows very dark. I take mine to Mexico and have never had any problems, but I park in safe places! The beauty of Baja is really worth the drive. Happy trails, JT

I have just recently retired and rigged my minivan into a camper, with a cot, bedding, storage under the cot, camp kit which is my tent, stove, cooler, etc. The cot is nice for us elders. I'm preparing for extended camping trips. Maybe you could take the seats out, and get a cot, too. If you have someone to store the seats for you. Best wishes. Happy trails.

    @quickflip65 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi Katie,
I saw your video after watching a video of a woman in her 60s who modified her Pontiac to be her home. She is more of a camper, camping on public lands, like "boondocking," than a traveler. If I were to guess (without watching your other videos), what inspired you to live in your vehicle was your initial desire to explore, and to go on unplanned road trips, which turned into something you do full time. I had lived a transitory lifestyle from October of 2008 until July of 2011. During that relatively short period, I have traveled with my pack on a train, bus, and a few times, been lucky enough to get a ride hitchhiking. I worked seasonal jobs for National Park concession employers at Bryce Canyon, Grand Teton, Yellowstone, and Big Bend, all of which provided housing. I also experienced countless numbers of days camping out. There were also times where I slept in hostels, which were considerably more comfortable than primitive camping, like what I did in Northern AZ. I have traveled all over the western United States all the way to AK.
Following that period of a few years where I have indelibly fond travel memories, that include walking the grounds of majestically stunning natural wonders, and meeting extraordinarily nice people, I moved to Reno, NV and lived there until March of 2016. Then I relocated to Seattle, a beautiful city but has a socially weird vibe. where I live now. I live comfortably in my small but modern studio that has all the amenities including contemporary full sized appliances (that include a washer and dryer and a dishwasher). Even with all the comforts living in a relatively new apartment in a nice area that overlooks Lake Union from the building's rooftop lounge and deck area, I still have not abandoned the idea of traveling for an extended period of time again. The thought of living a minimalist lifestyle, like making a vehicle my home, had slowly escaped my mind over the last few years. After watching your video however, it pressingly reignited my desire to experience that lifestyle again. Only this time, I would want to experience that relentless desire to travel.
I live a simple and boring lifestyle now, a total departure from how I lived my life in Reno. I don't do much here; that makes saving money less difficult. It is obligatorily deemed a challenge to save money here in Seattle as it is not cheap to live here. In just almost two and a half years. I have managed to save over $31K. Perhaps subconsciously, I was prepping to opt out on conventional lifestyle altogether. I go to school (using my veteran's benefits) and I am planning on applying for an internship at Boeing next summer. But as you might have already guessed, my mind is already getting increasingly bombarded with alternative ideas since watching your video.
This video has made me rethink what life really is. It made me realize that comforts of modern living are not necessities to satisfaction.
    Thanks.
    John F.

I live in the UK and I own a Toyota Yaris, too. I bought it new in 2001 and I'm still driving it! I say the same thing as you: "I'm going to drive this car til it dies." I love my Yaris. I have NEVER had one mechanical problem with it. I've had wear and tear issues, as with any car (brakes, tires, etc), but the damn thing keeps on going and drives as well as it did the day I bought it. I have been driving Toyotas since 1992 and will never drive anything else.

My friend and I just road tripped in my Yaris for the past month. We actually were able to make a really comfy bed in the back seat. We folded them down and then pushed the front seats all the way forward and leaned forward. Then shoved our clothes and stuff between the seats (to fill the gap) and put matts down. If you're still too tall (like me), put your head in the trunk and shove your feet between the two seats.

Good on you Katie :-) I've seen vids where people just get a roll of Reflectex & cut panels to for their windows. I've just bought 2 windscreen sun shades and am gonna cut them up to fit my side and rear windows ; just pop them in when camping or sleeping. On Ebay I saw black pleated pull down/up blinds; suction caps; about $7. I'm a 63 year old Aussie and just got what we call a 'panel van'- same size an an older station wagon but only a front seat, big cargo area, higher roof, .. I guess like a delivery van. These are used by trades people like painters, carpenters, plumbers so they can load their equipment, tools etc yet have a comfortable front seat; bench or bucket seats. Looking forward to testing it out next weekend and just stealth camp for the first time; maybe at a servo/ fuel station where there is food, drinks, restrooms yet near a nice beach. Take care, thanks for sharing your vids All the best

I enjoyed your video, have you considered getting a car top carrier to expand your storage, this would allow more living space in your car. Also if you add a rear hitch carrier you can create even more available space by have two points of external storage.
Anyway I often wondered by adding a platform that stretches across the dashboard and rear seat backrest you can create a full length bed to sleep on. Thanks for sharing a bit of your life.

You may have answered this but I haven't seen all of your vlogs. Why do you sleep in the front seat? It seems cramped to me. Does your front seat fold down? I'm 5'9 and that will never work for me. Also, you are so right that the older you get the more you notice ache and pains. My family thinks I'm crazy but 1 of my dreams is to travel to California in my VW Tiguan. I turned 40 this year and my baby is 9 so, I have some time before I can car live. In the mean time I would like to do a Van conversion and take the family. Because who wants to wait 9 years to do this. Okay enough rambling. Thanks

One idea that has come to me (in a similar boat, ie. might have to begin car camping/again). This new idea is I have finally taught myself how to sleep sitting up. This new idea is to sit in the front seat (which ever one works best) with pillows stacked high next to me. Then, like I do now where I live (due to sinus condition making it hard to lie flat currently) I just lean forward and to either left or right with my head lying on these stacked pillows/high enough to be comfortable. Find as long as can stretch legs out and have comfortable butt sitting space this works well. Been doing for month now. Works well for 4-5 nights before get real tired and have to lie flat for full out sleeping.
    hope helpful.

I've been doing this in my Scion Tc for over a year in the desert. I did the same with pillows in the bucket seats.
Side windows I made my own shades buying reflectix from home depot and some chalkboard fabric with adhesive. Kept light out and it looked like I had tinted windows.
I just bought a new car and looking for some tips on sleeping. 6'2" makes it difficult. My Scion I just folded the front seat and placed two skateboards between the front and back seat so I could stretch.

When I lived in my car I drove an Oldsmobile Alero, which had back seats that fold forward, so I was able to sleep with most of my body in the trunk. I had men's shoes that I used to hold a blanket stretched from the front window to over the front seat headrests to the back window. Anyone walking by would never know it was a female in the car! I also had a huge stuffed bear that stood in the front seat with a cowboy hat on his head when I drove at night. The bear looked like a big man sitting in the passenger seat and I always used the seatbelt to hold him up.

I have spent a couple of years living in my car after splitting with my partner, I can relate to everything you are saying. I had a Toyota Estima with curtains that was ok but it got wrecked and I ended up in a Civic. I actually found the winter easier than the summer. I found a fleece lined sleeping bag is better because it doesn't suffer from condensation.

I'm pretty sure that's a comment that you could afford to have kept to yourself. If you don't like how her car looks the don't watch the video. All of that criticism and negativity is 100% unnecessary, and how she decides to keep her car is none of your business

    • @mostly_normal_man
      @mostly_normal_man 5 ปีที่แล้ว +9

Actually, if she wants to showcase a dirty car publicly, then us users can ask about what we see. After all, it is a polite question, not an an unreasonable accusation. And frankly, she keeps herself in beautiful shape, so it is surprising. Also, my guess is she couldn't care where she sleeps, or how, it seems to be low on her priorities so maybe it doesn't matter if it's disorganized to her, and that's fine.

It's probably just difficult to keep clean. The Yaris is much smaller than you might think. I lived in a sedan once with my girlfriend and we didnt have that much stuff but having to move things around all the time messes formed very quickly and looked much worse than they actually were.

I couldn't sleep like that. I got claustrophobic just seeing the shots of your leg space (or lack thereof). I mostly sleep just like you in the fetal position, but just the thought that I couldn't stretch my legs out is too much! Luckily, if I chose your lifestyle I have a Fit which is a hatchback. With everything down I sleep quite well - but the quirk is I can stretch out fully like that. I was really impressed with the Fit. It looks so small but somehow it's very spacious inside. When I go camping I opt to sleep in my car versus a tent. I am terrified of insects and spiders (or and bears and crap too lol) so I don't have to worry about them as much in there. Also, I am light sleeper and it allows me to block out snorers (ear plugs also make me claustrophobic oddly) and people getting up etc. In the end it's just more comfortable and safe. I love camping - right until the fire goes out and everyone goes to bed until the next day so it's perfect for me. I sound like a random endorsement for the Honda Fit if you want a tiny car like hers with great mileage as well. Haha, I sound like I work for Honda.

I just got a used Toyota Sienna with 190k mi that I got off Craigslist for $3100. One owner, regular maintenance. Very nice. I can sleep almost completely laid out on floor on a couple foam pads with a sleeping bag and extra blanket (and throw blankets). We took out the back bench and one of the middle seats. Will probably take out the other middle seat soon for more space. And I have a dog and a cat (and a litterbox) in my car with me. Can make a huge difference! I WAS in a 96 Ford Explorer, which wasn't bad, I slept reclined in the drivers seat, but the seats are wider and recline more, so it wasn't too bad. I am almost 5 ft 9in and plus sized. A smaller person and/or a person with no pets would have an even easier time of it. I am in WA state and I have been in my car since May of this year (2018) and Oct-Dec back in 2016. An electric blanket that is body heat activated is a MUST for winter! Summer is just miserable though.

Are you considering a tiny house, or where do you plan to go from this vehicle? Are you saving money or are you spending lavishly and just enjoying the moment?
I don’t know if you seen these back seat inserts....I cannot sleep in a front seat, I don’t know if it’s ny sleep apnea or what but I wake up wrecked. Like a hangover without the drinking.
I’ve seen these inserts for the backseats of cars, that literally fill the feet area of the backseat to make a supportive bed out of the entire backseat area. Have you heard of or seen these? Would you consider one? It looked really neat, like that footspace gets filled in with cushioning so you have this comfortable flat service... I need to look it up. I grew up sleeping in vans and school buses as a kid and the freedom of it always fascinated me, but I’m 42 now, and even while camping recently ( maybe my weight gain hasn’t helped, but we slept on the floor of our soccer mom style vehicle, I don’t know what it’s called, but the back you can take the seats out and sleep in it like a van. Anyways my back was killing me and I woke up super early even though I wanted to sleep in , just because my back couldn’t take it. So I give you major props!

I took a month long road trip a while back. I also have sub compact. (Hyundai accent 2012 hatchback). I had a bed in there where i was able to completely stretch out. Here is how i did it. 1- Moved the front passenger seat all the way forward & tilted it forward. 2.-Took out the back seat backrests 3- Got a piece of plywood aproxx. 2 feet wide by 3.5 feet long. 4- Placed one end on the back passenger seat the other end was butted up against the back of the front pass seat. 5. I placed tote underneath the plywood where the back passengers feet would go to keep the plywood proped up. 6- i added two large couch coushions on top of the plywood and into the trunk area. I meet a guy that was traveling the country in a yaris and he took out his front passenger seat completly. Anyway. If you are ever in the ann arbor michigan area i invite you to stop by. i would be happy to help you make the yaris sleeping situation more comfortable. Ive got the tools and the experience. To make pretty much anything you want. And i think there is a better way than to just lay sideways on the seats that just sounds like torture

My Gosh, I love you... I mean wow, what a great video. I don't live in my car, but I am getting into stealth camping in my car (which I didn't know was even a thing, but I guess it is for some). I have a Prius, which many like to use because it's essentially a generator on wheels (it's a hybrid) and is great for keeping the climate in the car just the way you want it all night long. Really great video.. Thanks 4 sharing!

Wow you should really take a minute to clean your car. I know you live there. But no matter where you live it should be cleaned. And what we were seeing was not her stuff.....it was just trash ! Thanks for sharing your story.

Dearest Katie, I have been living in my vehicle off on since the mid 90s, I'm 5ft11in, here's a few questions for you and ideas for you, one question, do your back seats have access to the hatchback, if so you could sleep that way, second idea, shop around for coolers that are the right height from floorboard to top of back seat, do this for left and right floorboard, that way you can use coolers to store food, then use your yoga mat for bedding, in that way you can stretch out all you want, after you do all that, go to Walmart and get yourself a couple of items, one an entertainment thing to strap to the backside of passenger seat, that's all you do is attach it to the back of the seat, next get car charger organizer, on charger for the lighter included plus 4 USB ports and a caddy for your phone or sunglasses, all this will run you about 22 bucks, the cooler prices vary, but one cooler I reserve for ice cold drinks, the other food, also when I stayed in hotel/motels I would take the small ice bucket and use it for cold sandwiches such as tuna salad, chicken salad, and put ice around it or on top of the ice, anything else I can help with or if more come to mind, email or call me, I'll provide the number in the email, ravage2064@yahoo.com
