You do realize he provides the chords along with his playing, right?
The people punching things into a piano roll (or maybe a tracker, which is how a lot of this music was made way back in the day) actually have to know some music theory, so most of them are going to be looking for the kind of chords and rhythm needed to get the sound.

@@YourIdeologyIsDelusional Most older musicians like Phil Towers here always have a "new thing bad old thing good" mindset, which is absolutely cancerous

Injected With A Poison is a sadly overlooked classic and a total banger. More ideas in that one rave track than in many modern pop albums

After all and all these years, I still feel that happy feeling in my body and a little smile is on my face when I hear that M1 Piano sound. That sound was soooo huge and maybe is as big as 303, 909 and 808. It defined an era of music. It is the reason I can't sell my M1REx. It's just fantastic and played percussively even more fantastic. It was for electronic music, what was the Trabant car for the people living in the DDR/GDR. It was what the sun is for summer and snow for winter. It is what petrol and gasoline was for the automotive industry. It made everything so so so much better and was in it's way important for the scene! I love it. If there was a church of music, M1 Piano was one of the gods to send your prayers to.
Same for the TX81z Latelybass patch. :-) Graceful! Thanks!

That M1 piano cuts through anything when you play live. It's distinct tone demands to be heard, and no amount of drums or guitar can drown it out.

Got this in my high school, and after 30+ years I still enjoy designing sounds out of it. Granted it's no true Analog or FM synth, but lots of time you can get close if you are good. You can isolate out the attack of PCM and then combine with synth waveforms from DW8000 or different PCM loop to create 'synth acoustic' sounds that can only be synthesized by 8-operator FM. It takes a creative mind(not preset player) to fully explore M1's potential !

    Greetings from Canada,
Just wanted to express my thanks for all the content you produce. That early era of house/techno/acid/rave electronic dance music has been the one constant, throughout my (musical) life. While interest in other musical genres have come and gone, these songs from that era are still ones that I can listen to, at age 43, and be transported right back to the floor of the warehouse, club, or field I used to dance upon, during those days gone by.
I've always been fascinated with the arrangements, and the way you break down the patterns and instruments, is fascinating. The knowledge I've gained from you, has allowed me to fool around making my own beats and rhythms (strictly for myself...no delusions of grandeur, lol). Because of your musical analysis, I find myself grabbing my midi-synths and jamming on these classic sounds, more than I would say, pick up my guitar and channel my inner Jimi Hendrix (although, I still do that from time to time, much to the dismay of my neighbours, haha).
A sincere thank-you, for doing your part in keeping the spirit alive.

fantastic! I remember my first synth at around 1989 which was a Yamaha DX21..you would tear your hair out trying to get any half decent piano sound out of it. the M1 certainly raised the bar with that piano sound in 1988.

  • @sauermusicDE

The part starting at around 7:54 sounds AWESOME, man! I remember programming a "HOUSE PIANO" patch on my 4-operator FM synth Yamaha YS100 back in the days (well...sort of...and just as good as FM allowed it to be). I used it to play the chords of "People hold on" by Coldcut feat. Lisa Stansfield and the chords of "I don't know anybody else" by Black Box. It did the job surprisingly well.

nice video again 🤗👍 there's one thing i missed in this video; in the early rave and techno scene they used samples A LOT.. so what they used to do is they play one chord and sampled that chord on a roland w30 or an akai. then the pitched the sample some what and played that one chord sample on the midi keyboard. that's how they got that short, percursive rave sound 😎👍

Actually the time period when all this super stuff have been created was far too short, Praga Khan, Acen, Prodigy, SL2, and many more - why they do not have so many albums like Sinatra have or so? Well, we got recently few years of other nice and banging music called UK Freeform (Happy) Hardcore, but this was also insufficient.
