Yeahhh the Boss x employee power dynamic argument as an issue here doesn’t work since Sam technically has more power than him. She’s the daughter of his boss (who hates him) and the future CEO (as far as he knew in the beginning)

Like I get where people are coming from but the power is clearly stacked against Charles even if he is above her. Now if people don't like it because it's just an employee x boss dynamic, understandable. to each their own. It is what it is, but I still had to call out the glaring obvious

@@DayDayDoes yeah I think it’s ppl that don’t read the story. I personally like Charles and lowkey wish he was the final love interest. He’s more of a mature love interest than are in most webtoons. He has his own pitfalls, insecurities, and experiences that flesh him out more to me.

Tbh when I read Let's Play a couple years ago, I was completely unaware of the discourse within the community. But I remember really loving Charles and Sam together. I had no clue people hated him so much and viewed him as such a monster. Like you said in your video Sam had all the control in the pacing and progression of their relationship. So I'm not seeing the "groomer/rapist" argument people are trying to make... I think I loved their dynamic/relationship because Charles' main focus was always getting Sam to recognize her worth and to encourage her to be more confident. It was kind've like he was helping her finally acknowledge herself as a maturing adult. How people were able to twist that into something "evil" is wilddddd. I also really wanted Charles to remain the love interest because I thought Marshall and Sam were great as friends, they were almost giving me sibling vibes at a certain point. But hey that's just me.

Ooh, Marshall and Sam staying as friends and having some sibling vibes is totes valid. I could definitely see it and would have been believable. Honestly which way the ship leans, it would have been healthy for Sam as both Charles and Marshall are healthy alternatives once they get their shit together lol and yeah the fandom was unhinged when the finale of Season 2 happened. It was not a fun time to be a Charles fan back then.

I agree with you about Charles. I 'm one of those people who actually really loves Charles and Sam together. A few times, I thought his behavior was a little off, but then, after a second read through I understood it. If Charles only lusted after Sam he wouldn't have had the dream of Sam pregnant. He was freaked out by it because it gave him hope. Hope that he might be able to have the life he once dreamed of. Which freaked him out. It was after that we saw his need for control and jealousy come to the surface with Sam.
As for Sam herself, she is the one who really has control. She got to chose if and when this got started. Sam might mean to or might not but she uses her charms to get Charles to do way more then he was meaning to or wanted to. He was even worried about them starting anything and backed off but she pushed for it.

coming from your entire review of let's play, i agree with a lot of things here. I think it's funny that the ship name for sam and charles is 'Charm"

I cannot agree that Charles has never harmed Sam. I think the only reason it doesn't feel that way is that the story hasn't fully framed it in that direction yet. I went through a relationship that wasn't necessarily grooming, but the age and experience discrepancy left me with some serious trauma. That's what I see with Charm. When they discussed having sex four times in one night, all I could think was "That's a lot for someone without experience". Saying Sam consents misses that her participation is in part to fulfill an idea of who Charles would like, a byproduct of their dynamic neither can control. However, I still remember being utterly disgusted when Charles grabbed her after she talked to Benji and Charles finished her in front of Bowser. Even if Sam went along with it, Charles did that to control, possess, and claim her. It is a byproduct of his trauma, but it's an issue Sam should not be burdened with. It doesn't make Charles the worst person and I'd love to see him grow and get closure, I just don't feel comfortable using Sam as a tool, even if that's not his intention.

i don't understand why people hate characters for not being perfect or staying in their own lane or never having any fears or anxieties or whatever that make them a nuanced interesting character to read about... like... girl I think you just don't like to read DX

It BAFFLES me. Especially on a character that didn’t do anything problematic!! I’ve seen other characters do WORSE and they be getting praise like ???
