Very appropriate that the great Brigadier was recognised on this occasion.
He was as good as any horse that ever looked through a bridle in my opinion.
He was tested to the limit, neither distance or ground conditions were spared.
An amazing racehorse, with a perfect partner, the late Joe Mercer.

I believe that the 12 furlongs in the King George took to much out of the Brigadier and caused his upset three weeks later.

He was treated dreadfully by the Hislops.
The Brigadier was the best in recent times

A champion who had everything. I was always in the BG camp v Mill Reef. A superlative racehorse in every way.

He’d have been a good lead horse for Frankel…

Is that what you think Mattelwood you need to look again at the stats. The Brigadier won races from 5 to 12 furlongs on all conditions including heavy ground which he hated broke the course record on numerous occasions and won arguably the best 2,000 Guineas . Need I say more!!

@@petecarter2618And he won 15 before meeting defeat, and don't forget he won a strong Middle Park as a two year old, that winning top races for 6 furlongs to 12 furlongs, and won over 10 furlongs as a three year old, unlike Frankel who did step up to ten until half way through his four year old career.

@@nightowl7459 Indeed he did. He was more versatile than Frankel who only mainly raced between 1 mile and 10 furlongs on reasonable ground!!

@@petecarter2618 In credit to Frankel he did win the Dewhurst, but he definitely would have found six too short, the Brigadier had more national speed, and they took more chances with Brigadier Gerard.

@@nightowl7459 Definitely agree with you there!! It's always difficult to compare horses from different generations but Frankel was brilliant and had a different style of running to The Brigadier. It would have been more interesting if Frankel had taken more chances in his career. Mill Reef was another horse who raced on all types of ground ( heavy ground when he won the Gimcrack and very firm ground when he won his last race in the Coronation Stakes at Epsom ) which I don't think he liked too much. But they took all races in their stride in those days to prove they were champions. Nijinsky almost did it and if he had won the Arc and the Champion Stakes we would probably say he was the best of his generation!!

The Brigadier was some racehorse, especially the greatest horse race I ever witnessed, Brigadier Gerard, Mill Reef, and My Swallow, simply sensational, we all know what Mill reef went on to do DONT we, I really don’t like to compare racehorses, but on this occasion I will, FRANKEL was the most supreme race horse that I have ever witnessed, that day at Headquarters, was TRUELY SENSATIONAL in the 2000 Guineas, 15 lengths clear half way against top class opposition was simply AMAZING, went on to win HARD HELD, I have to say I won a tidy sum that incredible day, but there was more to come. The Queen Anne, I really could not believe what I was watching. The most UNIQUE RACE HORSE WE HAD EVER SEEN, and highly likely we will NEVER see AGAIN

A truly great horse and a character, but for over a mile and a quarter against Mill Reef that would have been a classic...Beautiful horses both and champions both...
