  • Firstly can I apologise for the shaky footage. My partner Rosiy is still learning how to video on a bouncy VR!
    Ex Maidstone and District Bristol VR PKE809M was 46 years old in January 2020 being new to Tunbridge Wells in 1974. I've owned this old lady since February 2017 and she's slowly coming together. Mechanically she's pretty good and although her bodywork is tired it's faded she's all there and complete.
    In addition to celebrating her birthday, this run was shakedown to check everything was all right during the long winter months of inactivity. Due to the engine access panel under the back seat being removed for some routine maintenance she is quite loud inside. The jingling you can hear when she's stationary is a loose exhaust clamp and is nothing serious.
    Please check out my other bus and train videos. Please like and subscribe so you don't miss my future uploads.

    I just love that distinctive bass exhaust note overlaid with the sing-song transmission.

    I could drive these all day long. They just sound absolutely fab and for their age are actually a nice thing to drive once you have a few bodies on board and get the springs working a bit. Pain of a narrow road this was shot on mind preventing it from opening up a bit.

      Yes I miss driving these old things in every day service. I think on this occasion I was jinxed as every corner I went around something was coming towards me! Normally I don't encounter a soul along these lanes.

    Such a distinctive sound, reminds me of Saturday trips into Wrexham on the crosville.

    Had the pleasure of driving a VR a few times, sadly they were removed from service shortly after. Great bus to drive and required some gearbox skills to drive correctly. Thank you, your video brought back some fond memories.

      Glad you liked it Paul. I also drove these old things in service but they were the 5 speed ones not like this one which is a 4 speed and again is totally different to drive.

    Looking up the history of this bus,I think I rode on it to secondary school in the 1990s ,berrys beaver bus taunton Somerset ,I was last kid off,and had to shut all the windows every day for the driver

    Coming from Cardiff which was heaven if you liked your Bristol VRs. Although most of our ones were 5 speed Automatic,pulling off in first gear. Made some lovely sounds.

    How does this pneumatic gear shifting system work? What role does the compressed air have to be able to make a gear change? I assume hydraulic oil has a role in it somehow? Or is it just pneumatic? Always been curious how the shifter is up front and the gearbox far back behind. Id be grateful to be educated on it 😃

    • @jakeyb2003
      @jakeyb2003  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This is an EP system or electro Pneumatic. The gear selector sends an electric signal to a pneumatic valve at the back which then operates the brake bands for the gear selected. It's hard to explain but yes, there's hydraulic transmission fluid in the gearbox which gives the system pressure.

    • @VictheSecret
      @VictheSecret หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Effectively, it's an automatic gearbox complete with torque converter where the actual shifting is controlled manually and there's no automatic throttle dip.
