- This session we work on a very collectible Magistic chest radio. This is quite rare and will end up in my collection. It was picked up at an auction for $120. It is unknown if it works or not.

I think this is a Majestic 381 from 1932. Same as a model 380. Transformer got hot and leaked on the chassis.
Someone replaced the three E caps after that happened but they were very low value of caps at 4,8,and 10uF
probably at 450 Volts. Good idea putting a fuse in it Ron! Note the rectifier socket may also need some attention.
You got a great deal at the auction!

Wow what a great idea for a radio! A real good enclosure for the speaker with nice grilles on the front & sides, so you can listen to it with the lid down! Brilliant! And those knobs you found for it! - geez I hope you took a cast of at least one of those they were beautiful mate, almost too good to give away! Little bakelite jewels!

I really enjoy these repair radio videos. With all your knowledge on radios and making exotic vacuum tubes have you ever designed a radio telescope dish or horn? The 21cm 1420 MHz is very popular for monitoring the neutral hydrogen-line in astronomy like the NML Cygni is a 'red hypergiant' star situated within the Cygnus constellation. 😎 Thank you.
I have had this weird tube for many MANY years that looks like it came out of one of your type of radios, full wave rectifier ( GE JAN-CDR-1641 ) found it in a pile of stuff when I was in HS, and held on to it, now i see people selling for insane prices. :O

I don't know where you looked but I found plenty of examples of this set online.
It's literally called the Majestic Treasure Chest, model 381, built in 1933.
The mis-spelling I did was the problem. I put the g instead of the j. Oh well. Thanks for the info!

I think they called that model a Pirate Treasure Chest radio. Looks like a TRF with one stage RF, a Tetrode (pendode tetrode connected, but why???) detector, and one stage of audio.
Every time I see your setup I cry over the huge tube making lots of tungsten and endless borosilicate from the lab I ended up leaving behind because I exhausted myself moving tons of kovar and alloy42

I did a little digging. It's the 381 Pirate Chest.

That is a very unique and pretty radio Ron! I'm wondering how they planned to let all that rectifier heat escape the case? Other than the open bottom there appears to be no path for the rising heat to escape!
I am guessing they either didn't consider this, or they hoped the large size of the box would dissipate the heat. The heat would definitely be a factor in how long the capacitors last!

The only thing left to fix is the Title to ResToring or ResTored. Also, was it a model 380?
Having the chassis mounted upside down in the case is a recipe for having tubes come loose and heat cooking everything. Interesting cabinet style but not good for the radio guts.

I'm working on a 1941 portable all American five and was wondering were best to order caps for it? Love the chest radio. Frist time iv seen.
For small quantities Antique Radio Supply company is fine. For larger quantities (25 and up) use Mouser Electronics or Digikey.

So I just checked and this appears to be a majestic model 381, about December 1932/33

I think I come under the title of "electronics hoarder." Every square foot of the house is packed with stuff. I need a bigger house!
Would an In line fuse holder be safer incase live end comes off and touches chassis? That's what my supervisor cat is telling me to ask.
I sometimes put the fuse in heat shrink and use it to connect the wires to the fuse without soldering and insulate everything at the same time. It's smaller and easier to use
the knobs in came with look original.
I have a radio someone tried it make way back in the 1920s,they have two tubes, both missing, no idea what they used, and no tuning capacitor, just two rheostat and a big mass of sting covered wire and a brass pin secector on the other side, an option for galena on the front and I have no idea what they were aiming at...and the amount of wire connectors on top! Ayayay
I would bet the tubes are 01-A. That was the most popular (and cheapest) tube back then. Many times the radio used the capacitance of the antenna to sort of tune the set.

What a wonderful piece of history. I have just found your site and have subscribed. What value fuse would you recommend to fit in these old radios?
Look at the power rating of the radio on the label. Calculate the fuse to be about double the power rating. If the radio is missing the label, use a 1/2 amp slow blow fuse for radios with a small transformer and a 3/4 amp fuse for larger transformers.

I have my electronic fuse where I plug in everything I work on. It is set to below the fuse in the radio.

The cost went to $450 per year to host it so I cancelled it. I was only getting a few visits per week, and sometimes none in months. I lost the address of the archive. Sorry.

Hey there i just worked on Philips B5X44A i got it recapped but i can't receive FM stations anymore any idea what could cause it?
"Any more" seems to indicate that you originally could. If that is the case, carefully check your work on the re-capping. Something put to the wrong place. It can happen! I have done it myself!

I thought I saw on the sticker the name spelled "Majestic" Hmmm???
I sold one of these models on eBay since I could not find a few replacement tubes.
Do you have google? Type in "antique radio tubes" and there are dozens of sellers of all types. Tubes are not a problem in repairing old radios.
@@glasslinger I couldn’t find the G84, 57AS, or G89. There was one tube when I found mine at an estate sale. Replaced the caps and searched eBay for a few months hoping they popped up but none of them did.
@@televisionforever Ah! I see your problem! The tube numbers are odd in the Grigsby line. The tubes are 57, 58, 84, and 89. These are common tubes that cost less than $10 each.

Today we lack people who can repair these and even make tubes from scratch. But that's my least concern.
