  • Markets have tumbled in reaction to Trump's tariffs as he warns the UK is "out of line" on trade with the US.
Donald Trump's tariff's are going to have "big economic consequences" for the world, Sky's economics and data editor Ed Conway explains.
Trump's first term in the White House was a "rollercoaster" and this time "it's clear it's going to be the same", he adds.

@@AliciaMotsinger The U.S. is not as invincible as it believes Donald Trump in his characteristic arrogance has decided to wage an economic war against the very partners who have long supported the American economy. A 25% tariff on Canadian and Mexican goods a 10% tariff on China and soon tariffs on the EU. He imagines this to be a demonstration of American strength in reality it is nothing short of a strategic miscalculation of epic proportions. America likes to boast about its so-called “energy independence.” The reality? It is a myth the U.S. does produce a significant amount of oil but it still depends heavily on imports and 60% of those imports come from Canada this is not some minor statistic this is the backbone of America’s energy security. The U.S. has around 60 billion barrels of proven oil reserves Canada has 170 billion barrels nearly three times as much. And yet Trump has decided to slap a 25% tariff on the very country that provides the bulk of America’s imported crude oil What will happen when the price of Canadian crude skyrockets? American refiners will pay more and as a result American consumers will pay more at the pump the average American will not thank Trump when they are paying $5 or even $6 per gallon for petrol this is a self-Inflicted economic catastrophe. Trump claims to be making America great again yet every single move he makes pushes the U.S. closer to economic decline. This is not strength this is self-inflicted weakness every country that Trump targets will respond in kind tariffs on American goods will rise across the board and soon the U.S. will find itself the most tariffed nation on the planet. Canada will retaliate the U.S. exports billions in goods to Canada everything from machinery to agricultural products tariffs will make American products uncompetitive. Mexico will retaliate U.S. companies depend on the Mexican supply chain for manufacturing higher costs will drive production out of North America entirely. China will retaliate Beijing has no interest in playing Trump’s game they will target American farmers tech companies and industrial goods sectors that are critical to the U.S. economy. The EU will retaliate Europe will not sit idly by as Trump imposes economic warfare tariffs on U.S. goods will cut deep into American exports. The Only Loser Here Is America Trump does not understand geopolitics he does not understand economics he is making the classic mistake of every declining empire assuming that brute force alone can command obedience but the world has changed. America is not the sole economic superpower anymore. Canada the EU China and Mexico do not need the U.S. as much as the U.S. needs them. Trump is walking America into a trade war that it cannot win he believes he is punishing the world but in reality he is isolating the U.S. and making everyday Americans pay the price. His tariffs will cripple U.S. industry raise consumer prices and accelerate the decline of the American economy. Washington believes it can act without consequence that illusion is fading fast.

The US imports raw materials and manufactures the finished product selling it for a huge profit. They have about a $42billion deficit with Canada which is the 11th highest (despite him making up a new number every time he talks about it) but just on our oil alone they take 100billion of our crude and turn it into 300billion of refined products. I'm all for the EU getting slapped with tariffs. The UK wanted its independence (majority vote) but never wanted to be on bad terms. Just like an abusive spouse, the EU wanted to make an example of us because they didn't want other countries to think they should exercise their democracy and want independence.
They made things awkward, more than it needed to be. Like it had been said, we left the EU not Europe.
Our "leader" and King need to get out of bed with the WEF as well. I mean, Elon Musk wasn't welcomed by them into British politics because he's a foreign elite... Sorry what are the WEF again? Hypocrisy. Independence but friendly relations isn't an unreasonable request is it. Maybe to some it is

The outcome of this will be the rest of the world pivoting away from the US because the US cannot be trusted to meet its treaty obligations or any other agreement it makes. The Europeans and others won’t buy US defense equipment and the US will be less secure and poorer with fewer allies. This will weaken America and embolden China.

indeed we do remember last time, it all seemed to be massively overhyped mainly by the press and opposing political powers, spreading fear and uncertainty, ensuring a nice market dip, only to recover to new highs and loads of folk involved in the fear made money. Thereafter 18 months after things had recovered and the world hadn't come to an end, it had changed, in many ways it was safer until covid helped readjust everything.
