You're correct in this instance, they're paying homage to old school rap, interpolating KICK IN THE DOOR, P.I.M.P, MADE YOU LOOK and PON DE REPLAY.
BLACKPINK is unique in the K-Pop world. K-Pop has always had Western influences and used some English, Rap, HipHop, EDM and Pop as well as traditional Korean music, but BLACKPINK has hit the "sweet spot" that appeals to both the Eastern and Western ear, specifically the HipHop community. One reason is that three of the girls are fluent English speakers (Rosé, with the blonde hair, is a New Zealander who grew up in Australia, Jennie, the dark haired rapper, spent five years in New Zealand and Lisa, the rapper with the bucket hat, is Thai and grew up speaking English as well.) Another reason is Teddy Park, their writer/producer, who is a rapper who grew up in New York and California before moving to S. Korea.

Yes bro, that was their homage to 50 years of hip hop...tons of references

Actually it came out on the recognized 49th anniversary of hip hop. This was a tribute to their influences.

Each member is a Global Ambassador for multiple luxury brands:

    So you have...
Jennie, red outfit, Korean. Born in S Korea but spent 5 years in New Zealand. Main rapper, lead vocalist.
Lisa, red hair, Thai. Born and raised in Thailand. Main dancer, lead rapper, sub vocalist. Fun fact... she is close friends with Bang Chan of Stray Kids. They have matching hoodies she sent him for his birthday.
Rosè, blonde hair, Korean from Australia. Born in New Zealand but grew up in Australia. Main vocalist, lead dancer.
Jisoo, in the cage, Korean. Born and raised in S Korea. Visual, lead vocalist.
No greenscreen or CGI. All of their sets are built for them.

Welcome to the world of Blackpink. They never disappoint and any MV you choose to react to is just as good as this one. I recommend that you start with their debut, with Boombayah and Whistle.

  • @SuperJuntax

    FUNFACT bout the song:
    - Jennie straight up started the song with notorious big lyrics references "kickin the door waving the 44"
    - lisa's "one by one then two by two" references to rihanna's "pon de replay" song
    - "look what you made us do" lyrics references to taylor swift's song
    - lisa and jennie rap part using samples sound reference to easy e's song "real muthaphukkin g's" (homage to boom bap era)
    - theres also 50 cent,wu tang and nas refference on the songs, try pick it up
All this refferences seems relevant with the month when its released, its 49th hip hop culture annvrsary

OF COURSE, they're influenced by American hip-hop because their producer with all songs is Teddy Park. He is Korean-American rapper, songwriter, and record producer. Born in Seoul, South Korea, Park moved to the United States with his family as a young child. When he was 17 years old, Park and his friend Danny flew to South Korea during summer vacation to audition for YG Entertainment and debuted with the group 1TYM. For so many years after that he became an in-house producer for YG Entertainment and co-founded The Black Label in 2016. And he made the ‌🇧‌🇱‌🇦‌‌🇨‌🇰‌🇵‌🇮‌🇳‌🇰‌ stardom ✨️

actually this song was mainly an homage for their inspirational figures in old school hiphop
the frst line :"kick in the door, waving the coco" was Biggie's , next they referenced Rihanna :"one by one and two by two", the whole rap verse was a shout out for the west side old rap

  • @ningfication_
    @ningfication_ 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

he is very right about blackpink having a sound inspired by American artists, when jennie (the first girl) came in, she was referencing a biggie song with the lyric “kick in the door waving the coco” when lisa, (the second girl) came in, she was referencing a rihanna song with the lyric “one by one and a two by two” there’s actually a whole scandal behind these lyrics and blackpink got a lot of backlash for “plagiarism against black artists” so yeah 😭

Kpop artists are inspired by American R&B, Rock, etc. They add their own creativity, sensibilities, as well. Hear Red Velvet's Automatic, for example, to hear what I mean. Some groups work with African American creators as well. Any (G)I-dle, Soyeon, rapping? Lion, M/V for sure.🥰🥰
