    I remember the first time I saw a picture if this beauty. As a child - it was in the late sixties - I was lost in my knowledge on fighters. I've never seen this kind of wings, with double delta... Even today, Draken appears to me like a idea cames from another thinking than the major part of the aeronautical at this time. The landing itself is a bit atttonishing, seated on the tail wheel... Gracefull manner to roll to slow down after hight speed flying.
    Thank you for this part of history still flying.

      When engine is not running, there is no hydraulic pressure, the RAT (whatis called "Milla" in Draken) hangs outside, the pressure itself takes it in. Engine is started with AVPIN (isopropyl nitrate) as you mentioned.

      @@Manufly59 Based on the link below, the simulator was made by Curtiss-Wright Corp?
      The similator at Rovaniemi back then had at least three rows of cabins 4-6 meters each, there was one main switch which occasionally flew sparks when the computer was turned on (ate Amps), the operators/flight instructors table was towards the fighter, the first half of the fighter was resting on top of 3 hydraulic jacks which tilted/rolled the fighter, there was no graphical user interface at all - only analog meters, non-transparent canopy, gravity and tightening of the seat belts gave the 3D immersion inside the fighter, lights would turned on in the canopy when flying over clouds, if the fighter stalled there was a piece of metal producing from the stick and it vibrated according to the stall.
      The contacts in each circuit board needed to be cleaned occasionally while wearing a mask that got fresh air from a back pack. Fond memories from a short Time with this beast, marvelous engineering from the 1960 era.

    Nice, the pilot can get out without a ladder. And it looks upgraded. The landing looked like it needs a proper pilot though, while the trend seems to go to flying arcade machines. Let's hope these will be around for a while longer.

    What is “reaction of isopropyl Nitrate “ for? I used to load Jets and never saw that done. They don’t just get the turbine up to speed and introduce fuel?

    • @aleksimakela6787
      @aleksimakela6787 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Late answer but that refers to the starter, which runs by isopropyl nitrate. It allows engine to spool up much faster than electric starter. Close to so called cartridge start, but different.

      I remember filling up the tank with that fuel. You had a small barrel with the stuff on a cart and hand pumped it. Sometimes when you attached the hose to the plane, that stuff would leak a bit from the nozzle and run down your arm. Not a very nice feeling at all.
      I think the tank had enough fuel for three starts, maybe 10 liters in total? Someone with better memory correct me :)

    When I was in the Swedish youth airforce, sort of like the boy scouts within the airforce. I was a total viggen fanboy, yes it was way back and i am and old fat guy now, and of course i also thought the F-14 tomcat was all that :), what young adolescent didn't in those days ;o). I heard people speaking of this aircraft with reverens saying that the old school draken pilots could do things with that airplane that viggen pilots could only dream of. I am not saying it was better performance wise just that it could do some amazing flying. This is also hearsay as i have not witnessed any fancy flying in the draken. Just the genuine respectful way they talked about it made me respect this airplane a lot more.

      Well the Viggen being an attack aircraft first only had a slightly tighter turn circle than the Draken.
      The main thing with the Viggen was the electronics, there where some pretty bad ass Draken modernization's looked at before the Gripen project was green lit, most included giving in canards some even turning it into an attack aircraft with RBS 15's and everything !
