This comment is a year too late, but for the record, this was a great reaction. You got the meaning of the song, and the feeling of the song, and -- unfortunately -- the shortness of the song. But it said everything it needed to say in just three verses and two minutes. He painted such a vivid picture of Grandma that we know exactly what she was like. What an intimate personal song -- and probably too quiet and personal to make the top 40. But it sticks with you, more than 50 years later, when most of the other songs that hit the top 40 in the fall of 1971 have been forgotten. (But they played it a long on WARM-590 AM in Wilkes-Barre).
I gotta go see my mamaw. She's over 90 now and it took me too long to appreciate where she was coming from. I'm so blessed to have her in my life still.
Bill Withers has got soul in those VOCALS! I don’t know a lot of his music but I should explore it… Lean on Me is the one literally everyone knows. It’s a total classic.

He wrote such classics as Lean on me, Hello like before, Grandma Hands, Use me, Who is he , Lovely day, I want to spend the night, Just the two of Us, Ain't no Sunshine, he was huge in the 70's r&b world. There was a such thing in the 70's as black radio and Bill was huge on black radio.
Not My Favorite Bill Withers Classic. But like You Both said,.. Just about Everyone can relate to Grandma's Hands. Both of My Grandma's Helped Raised Me. My Mom's Mother is the Last of them Both Living. They Both have taught Me all there is to Know about Living this thing We call LIFE. 💝💝💝💝💝
