One of my favorite author, Dominick Dunne, wrote a book about the Woodward's tragic story, "The Two Mrs. Grenvilles", exellent reading. Thank you for showing the house & property so well described in the book.
Great posting as usual however the Woodwards owned the 'Playhouse' on the Sunken Orchard estate by the architect James W O'Connor, and the shooting of Billy Woodward occurred there, not in the main house featured here
Meadowbrook Hall, the home of Matilda Dodge Wilson, the widow of car maker John Dodge. Her sister-in-law, Anna Thompson Dodge, built Rose Terrace which you have featured! Meadowbrook Hall is the 4th largest historic home in the US currently and is a museum today!
I attended maybe four concourse de elegance at Meadowbrook. It is either the forth or sixth largest private estate in North America. Have you ever toured the house itself? It was either Horace or John who died of that malady of the rich, decompensating cirrhosis in that house.
Take a look at the Marland mansion in Ponca City, Oklahoma. He was founder of Marland Oil, later became ConocoPhillips. It’s restored and was a museum house back in the late 70’s. Just amazingly beautiful. Paneling in the Dining room from Sherwood Forest. Lime wood in Mrs Marland rooms. Check it out!!
I would love to see a video on El Castile in Decatur, Texas. This is the mansion build by the Waggoners who made their fortune in cattle ranching. It was built in 1883 and supposedly is mostly original. There’s so much secrecy around it and there are few if any pictures of the inside. It is not abandoned but I don’t think it’s been occupied in decades.
The William List mansion (no longer in existence) was located in Seabrook, Texas. There are many, many dark stories surrounding it's owner, his horrid sexual life, and his murder. Most information can be found in the Houston newspaper. His daughter's murderer was on trial at the time of his death. This is a, layers upon layer's, deep story.
Ken, while many of this families mansions were destroyed or burned down, it would be nice if you could feature one of the Ames family mansions in North Easton, MA. The family owned the Ames Shovel Company and made their fortune producing shovels from the late 1700’s until the 1950’s. Some of the mansions remaining are Spring Hill, Langwater, Frothingham Hall, Queset, and Borderland.
Outstanding content Ken! Your research and narration are beyond compare. I haven't been able to find your coverage of this one, but have you covered Villa Turicum? It was a Rockefeller/McCormick home in Lake Forest, IL. And...right next door was Walden which was built by McCormick's brother.
Consider doing Tuckaway in Indianapolis. It was owned by fashion designer George Meier and his wife Nelly a world known palmist. Coco Chanel helped them decorate the house. Eleanor Roosevelt, Walt Disney, Joan Crawford were just a few of their many famous visitors. Carol Lombard was there and Nelly warned her not to fly back to L.A. the next day. She did, you know the rest. House still contains all of the correspondence, photos and autographs of all visitors.
The Conrad Caldwell hoouse in Louisville, KY is a beautiful stone Richardsonian Romanesque gem. It is at the corner of Magnolia and St. James Ct. across from Central Park.
Iwould like to see a video of Embassy row in washington DC, Kalorama in washington Dc, Perry Belmont mansion, and fairfield pond from Ira Rennert. Thanks
Rose Terrace, Anna Thompson Dodge’s house in Grosse Pointe. Built in the 30’s, sadly demolished in 1975. Anna died in 1970, age 103. I was in the house two times. Just magnificent!
You could literally have a whole channel devoted to the gold coast mansions of Long Island. They all have interesting stories behind them. Heres a few worth looking into: Knollwood Coe Hall Hempstead House The Whitney Estate The Phipps Estate Oheka Castle (the second largest private residence in the US) Templeton The Frick Estate All of them except Knollwood are still in use (though Knollwood has the most interesting story to it)
The Phipps Estate is Old Westbury Gardens, right? In my opinion the most beautiful of all. Familiar to many because of its use in movies and commercials, it's maintained in beautiful condition and open to the public. I'm surprised it has never been featured on this channel.
@@jamesclendon4811 Yes, most of the places I named have different names now. Knollwood is the Muttontown Preserve, Coe Hall is the Planting Fields Arboretum, the Frick is the Nassau County Museum of Art and Hempstead House is part of Sands Point Preserve. The North Shore of Long Island is littered with old relics of the past. I even worked in Templeton and went to school on what's left of the Whitney and DuPont estates.
Hi Ken! I love all the beautiful homes you have covered and all the info about them! The house I world love to find more out about is a house in Pittsburg Kansas. It was known as “The castle” by Pittsburg’s residents. That’s all I really know about it.
This is an amazing home full of such beautiful details. The gardens are superb. The many home owners were very blessed to have lived there. The deaths that occurred there was very tragic.
There are many famous mansions in Newport R.I. and the surrounding area that you have yet to report on. Lot's of history there from Miramar and the Elms on Bellevue Avenue.
Although I have watched many of your This House posts I may not have seen any that you have done about the estates of Huguette Marcelle Clark, heiress and daughter of Senator Wm. Clark who was the richest man in America tied with John D. Rockefeller. It would be terrific to see an episode that showcased her Manhattan penthouses on Central Park. Thank you for such detailed and interesting posts.
Nice video and I like the added touch that you put in the 911 information for readers who may not know about it. Just subscribed to your channel. Thank you!
A mansion torn down and orchard destroyed to make room for Elderly Living, "The (fireproof, I was told) Miller Mansion", Broad street, Meriden Connecticut. The only structure remaining is the Barn\Stable (aka chauffeurs residence) on the side street; Olive Street to the north.
would be great to see you cover the Pyrenees Castel in ALhambra CA, AKA Phil Spector house, the place where Spector shot Lana Clarkson ... I grew up next to this Historical Landmark
Excellent video. Videos on San Marino (mansion, gardens and the art: Blue Boy and Pinky especially); the Pabst mansion (Milwaukee); Shadow Lawn (West Long Branch, NJ) and on a different note Wingspread (Racine, WI) would be good videos. I also 2nd @thinktonka's suggestion of Meadowbrook Hall.
I think this is one of the more beautiful houses you've shown; a place I could actually imagine living in. While the jury may have let her off, most thinking people who understand firearm safety would find her guilty - why shoot at a shadowy figure some distance from you? She got rid of her husband, but things didn't work out how she planned. Too bad about the boys.
I enjoy your videos. It would be interesting to hear about some of the military Officers row housing. I know there is one in Vancouver Washington and one in Mare Island california. Thanks
The Woodward family were owners Belair Stud started in 1747 in Collington, MD by Samuel Ogle. Purchased by James T Woodward in 1898. Belair Stud produced 2 Triple Crown winners, Gallant Fox in 1930 and Omaha in 1935. Along with Hall of Famers Nashua, Granville, and Johnstown. The Woodwards didn't just enjoy riding, Belair Stud changed the bloodlines in American Horseracing. The photo of Wm Woodward Jr holding the horse is more likely than not Nashua himself. Really interesting story. I love your channel. Thank you so much.
Have you heard of the Fairbanks House in Dedham, MA? It's the oldest (not grandest) timber frame house in the US. Built in 1641, it was lived in by family members until 1904. And, yes, it's that Fairbanks family! Interesting family history.
You might think about John Brown House in Providence, RI. It is one of America's first mansions. It stayed in the Brown family for years and is now a museum. It is 18th century elegance.
Evidently there's a 2nd Rust mansion as well located on N. 6th and Yakima street in Tacoma, WA as well! I'd like to hear the histories of both mansions!
Oh my goodness. Gorgeous place and wonderful history until the end. SO TRAGIC. I honestly believe she didn't now it was her husband. Thank you for this great video. You do an amazing job.
The mansion no longer exists but I think you should look into the Fargo mansion in Buffalo, NY. It consumed 4 city blocks and had “timber from every state of the union”, golden doorknobs, etc. French Mansard style. William Fargo of the Wells Fargo company. There’s a lot in buffalo. I especially liked your video on the millionaire’s row in Buffalo!

Woodward's murder must have been premeditated, and she took her life out of guilt. The children lost their status, and they couldn't bare the scandal. Would you please show Howard Hughe's home.
Fascinating ---as always! Such a beautiful house yet the setting for so much sadness and tragedy. Ken, you and your viewers might be interested in the fascinating books "This Crazy Thing Called Love: the Golden World and Fatal Marriage of Ann and Billy Woodward" by Susan Braudy, published in 1992. It's a can't-put-it-down book and shows how Ann Woodward's killing of her husband really was a terrible accident. Mr. Woodward's death was a fluke because Ann was using a gun that ordinarily wouldn't have had the power to kill her husband.
Ann could have picked up the telephone and called the local police. They would have responded immediately to these wealthy taxpayers. Instead she "picked up a shotgun"??
Very interesting story; it resembles fairly closely one episode of "Columbo" where a woman murders his brother after locking him out and forcing him to try to get into the house through her bedroom. She shoots him and later claims she believed it was a burglar. Incidentally, describing Fay' Ingalls' job as a lawyer as "stressful" is a joke. I would like to have a "stressful" job like that, which would enable me to engage a famous and very expensive architect to design and build a luxurious 29-room Georgian mansion!
"Stress" is worrying if you can pay the rent at the end of the month. Ingall's "stress" was whether he could sufficiently impress others in his rich social set.
Greystone Mansion in Beverly Hills! Scandal after scandal leading to a gay love triangle and a murder / suicide. But as to which man shot which, well, that's the question. And of course the mansion is absolutely amazing.
I honestly think her entire story was a huge load of BS. She thought he was a prowler? Considering the history of upset, fighting, screaming and yelling. I have no doubt she killed him out of rage for trying to divorce.
If you or a loved one are experiencing a crisis situation, you can call or text 988 and be connected with Lifeline crisis counselor.
