Our First Visit to Dominican Republic - Amber Cove - HAL Nieuw Statendam - February 2020

- On this cruise, the itinerary is completely new to us! Four new ports... that is so exciting! First up in Amber Cove in the Dominican Republic. We had been told it looks like Jurassic Park as you sail in and it is so true... well the movie was partially filmed here! The landscape is just beautiful and we can't wait to explore. Once onboard we piddle around the port for a bit and then are determined to get to the beach. We walk out of the port area and it is just a short taxi ride there. The beach is small and perfectly shaded by palm trees and it also has great views of the ship. After having a local beer and relaxing for a bit, we head back to the port area to check out the pool. This port is owned by the Carnival Corporation so only those ships dock here. There is a great pool - it is huge! There are slides, splash areas for the kids and even a zip line. It is a great place to spend the day!

Just an update on that beach. We were at amber cove last week and no taxis will take you there so we walked. Took about 30 minutes and it is not a clean area. Wasted day
Y'all definitely know how to cruise! Can't wait to get back out there. It's because of y'all my hubby finally let me book outside of Carnival. We will be on the Encore next year and I'm ecstatic! Thank you!

Ships dock in Puerto plata, I go to Punta Cana on the south end sand like silk, just like Riveria Maya like powder white...Don't do cruises only all inclusives...

I have been on the Koningsdam twice already. The Dive and the Deli are so good. I swear that HAL have the BEST seasoned fries. Lovely beach you were at.

Good night??? First, yes they have a wrap-around promenade. That beach near Amber Cove was great. You did perfect with"Puerto Plata". There are other things to do besides the sad coffee hacienda tour or so. I hope you found the deli by the pool, good pizza, and the tacos station by the burgers (not as good as Carnival 's). Also, check out the movies upstairs at night. Same as TV but a bigger screen...the deli is open and you could try the late buffet (J)! Like if you were still there...LOL
I'll be in Amber Cove by July 6th (11 days away) & I'm super excited! Taking the Carnival Horizon out of Miami, Fl. I loved this video :) so beautiful there & now I know some places to stop. Thanks for the video!!!

We are doing this cruise in October. Would you say this cruise line is still old people? It seems to me that it isn't that so much anymore?
Stay in the port you can get a beer for $1.00 or $2.00 I know we have been there lots of times oh yes a bottle of pop $1:00 in port .
Would love to see your sand collection on how you display it could yall do a show an tell sometime soon

Only drink bottles and sealed drink...cholera in Santo domingo...no ice eithet
Question....I've heard that if you get your passport stamped at places like this it can/will void your official passport. Is this true?

So pretty. We went in January 2020. The Damajagua Waterfall excursion was the best! Plus I love stones and Larimar is only found in the Dominican republic so I had to get some.

Are you able to take a taxi to get there if you are docked at the other port in DR? Will be on NCL Escape in March 2023?
This is Carnival’s private port so you would be docked at the other port. Only Carnival Corp ship guests are allowed in here.

Nice video ! But no scenes in any Jurassic Park movie where filmed in the DR the amber mine in the movie that is supposed to be in the DR is actually Hoopii Falls in Kauai.

I will be in Amber Cove on November 30th, since I have been there many times before, I am not sure if I will get off the ship. However, I have never spent time at their pool so if I do anything maybe I would check that out. Or do what you were originally going to do and make it a spa day.

Thanks for this info! My Dominican husband and I are going to Amber Cove soon and hoping to meet up with 4 of his family members in port. Do you think they’ll be able to enter the port and spend the day in Aqua Zone with us, or is it closed off and have people checking cruise cards? Thank you for any info!!!!

Did you guys try the pizza place? We are taking the ship to Europe in April. Hopefully the CDC gets off their but and approve cruising.
We went to Amber Cover when Carnival re-routed the Horizon due to Covid-19 The first week of March. The day we arrived it was torrential rain all day. Our excursion was cancelled not due to rain but operational issues...Thank God..it saved us a couple hundred bucks.... any beach excursions went on as scheduled. We didn't get off the ship. Looks like you had great weather.
I love Amber Cove .. it’s so pretty . I like to get a taxi and explore Puerto Plata. I love mingling with locals and giving my money to local spots .

This time last year we where just about to leave from Northern ireland for a week in Florida followed by a week on the carnival breeze visiting Amber cove, Grand turk, St Thomas and Puerto Rico. Then 2 more weeks in Florida it was our first cruise and it wont be our last xx
So you know if you can go outside the port area? Go to a different city, like Santiago which is an hour away. Thanks, and love your video.

I went to La Romana, DR on a December Carnival cruise in 2003. It was the HOTTEST place I have ever been!!!

I’m loving this series and ship! Seems like maybe an older crowd? Which I think we’d love. Do most ports have local transport (those bicycle carts) from the ship to the port area? My husband has a bad back, so if we can limit the walking, that helps him enjoy.

I stayed at the resort next to Amber cove years ago, they were actually dredging and blasting at the time preparing to put the docks in. I remember how beautiful the beach was.

You may not get the chance to see Sunrise... since Carnival is putting her up for sale for $350 million. Great videos, we're going to Amber Cove in Oct if sailing resumes.

Yeah they do that sometimes! It can be mistaken as drugs!
Where do you keep all your sand at home? I have some in a huge wine bottle that stands about 15 inches high.
I bought little bottles with a cork from Amazon and put the sand in each with a label.

I stayed at that hotel next to the port (port wasn’t there) in 2003 ... it was the RIU Bachata at the time .... the bay was untouched and beautiful.

No we never made it to MDR
@@EECCTravels -- Too bad. I think HAL has the best overall MDR breakfast and dinner offerings of any cruise line I've been on.

When you do its best to have an excursion because while the port is nice. There's not much to do there.
