One thing you missed which Burlington is famous for is snake alley. It's been featured on ripleys believe it or not. You drove right past it. You can see the sign to your left at 6:51. It's a one way street and the exit is where that white sign is at. It's not just a tourist attraction it's a real street that you can drive down. I was born and raised in Burlington and spent over 30 years there

There are a lot of beautiful mansions, homes and parks you missed. The Leopold Starker mansions area on south bluff. Out on Garfield. Crapo Park- hilarious name. Gorgeous view.
For me, the tragedy of Burlington is that it is beautiful enough- if somewhat inconveniently situated- to compete with any Midwest tourist trap from Galena, to Arthur to Cedarburg. But there is no vision. That ship has sailed.
Currently, a historic Cascade Bridge is doomed because the priority is to funnel more vehicle traffic from Main Street, through the beautiful parks and into unpopulated fields and parts unknown in the south- unless they want 61 traffic to use Crapo park as a cut through to bridge. Madness. The parks should
be an asset or at least amenity - not a shortcut from 61 to the bridge.
The blight is hard to miss. The town is a third smaller than when my parents moved there in 70s.

@@roberttaney1262I grew up in southeast Iowa, and attended the junior college in Burlington when it was in the old building at top of Jefferson in the late sixties. I feel the funneling traffic through Crapo would be a mistake also. What a beautiful, calm, and historic area to wreck with expressway traffic. I guess when I run back to Iowa to see my sisters and their husbands in the Washington area, I had better spend a day reminiscing in Burlington before coming home.
Crapo Park was where Dad's family had our family reunion in the summer. When Grandma passed away, she and Grandpa had 88 descendants. One of Dad's sisters and her husband and family lived not far away from the park. Burlington holds many good memories for me. I wish the best for the town!

Wow, watching this video brought back SO many incredible memories of growing up in Burlington. Such an amazing town at so many different levels. I haven't been back to Burlington in many years now, but I have a very strong recollection of what it was like there in the 70's and 80's and it was incredible! The thing that really made Burlington such a great place to be back then was the people. So many really terrific people came out of Burlington over the years. I know a lot of that is gone now and Burlington has changed and will never again be what it once was, but for those that got the chance to live there it will ALWAYS be in incredibly special and wonderful place - one line no other!

I was just a few blocks away putting concrete forms into storage at a big where house on the 3 floor and the wall facing the blast separating it about 2 inches from the building. I grew up in Mt. Pleasant (half an hour west of Burlington) in the '70s, and Burlington was the "big town" where we'd go to shop. It was on its way down then and has declined even more since. by the way, both Des Moines County and the city of Des Moines were named after the Des Moines River, which forms the "tail" of southeast Iowa. Des Moines County is quite a bit older than the city of Des Moines, and in fact Burlington was once the capital of the Iowa Territory.

Although i was not born in Burlington, i consider it my hometown, but i did move away 29 years ago for better working opportunities. It was a pretty thriving town until the 1980's or so. Kind of a have or have not town. If you worked at one of the large factories, you did well, but if not, and you did not have a degree, then like many places, you might suffer.

Speaking about drugs in Burlington, I used to live in the Quad Cities and would travel through Burlington on the weekends to visit my parents and brothers in Missouri. I would leave right after work on Thursday at 10 p.m. and get there at about 2 a.m. On one such trip i had one of my twin brothers with me, he was 17 at the time but didn't have his drivers license yet. On this trip i got tired and had to pull over and take a nap in a parking lot . After awhile my brother woke me up and told me there was a cop that had pulled up into the parking lot behind us. He was a Burlington city police officer, He informed us that Burlington has a Under 18 curfew. This police officer had the Audacity to ask if we had a big drug problem in our hometown that we were headed to. Our town has a population of just over 200, mostly old retired people. I really should have told him that there are more Burlington police officers using drugs than there are druggies in our town.

After watching several of the Iowa videos, Keokuk(where I grew up), Burlington and Muscky, the route you chose is quite random. For instance the Keokuk vid you took the left turn at the Old Lincoln School and went back into the virtually poorest most undeveloped part of town. These old river towns had a lot of wealth back years ago, and there are hundreds of incredible old houses. I also went to college in Burlington, and worked there for years. Knowing the area and having spoke to law enforcement, many of the crimes committed are transplants from the nearest metro areas, whom seek refuse from arrest in thier own city. They bring in drugs and illegal weapons and cause a lot of chaos. there is more to that story than meets the eye. also there are incredible views to be seen along the bluffs of the Mississippi in Iowa. when I moved from Keokuk, that is what I missed the most was the views, and the river. When you see it everyday, then move you realize the natural beauty that you take for granted everyday. I have been through hundreds of these small towns, and sadly there is a lot of attrition. It's everywhere, not just the midwest. Many smaller towns are doing a great job of restoring the older downtown areas, but some are just too far gone to salvage.

Burlington Iowa once was the capital of Iowa when North and South Dakota territories were a part of Iowa. Something you wouldn't have noticed with just driving through town is those tall buildings in downtown Burlington have active store fronts but most of the upper levels are all vacant, in fact there are many that are unsafe to go into any levels above the first floor because they have been so neglected. However I must also admit that they have done a few Renovations on a few buildings down town to make them safer and have discovered some of the old hidden rooms for the Underground Railroad which used to run through here. Thank you again for this video. It's nice to not feel so neglected as a town

Very interested in any history you may know about JD Harmer in the late 1800'a, his lumber company and/or his home built in the 1890''s at 1428th N. 7th Street. I am his great great grand daughter.

Heritage hill homes are a time capsule, and what about beautiful Crapo Park and those beautiful river views?. Next time you do a video, you should find someone who lives there to show you the good parts since all you focus on is sketchy areas. A balanced perspective would be nice. You did a lot research for Dubuque video yet... yet not for Burlington. Make a trip to the "Old Library" Des Moines County historical center downtown and re-do this vid...

River towns in iowa have a higher crime rate because a lot of the drogs(ice) get imported through the river. Higher concentrations of ice definitely contribute to the crime.

I lived in Burlington as a wee-little Xerro in the late 70s. My dad was the store manager of the K-Mart there (I think I saw where the K-Mart was). A lot obviously has changed since 1979. I recognized the bridge, McDonald's, and the high school. From what I can gather, it seems like St. Paul and St. Mary's Catholic schools are gone. Is Course Elementary still around?

It floods on both sides. It seems like Illinois gets it worse because the levy breaks. The city of Burlington has spent millions the past couple years putting in a flood wall. Also Burlington is very hilly so most of it sits up high so when it floods its the area in this video where he shows the memorial auditorium and the port of Burlington.

There are areas that flood on both sides of the Mississippi River. Just north of Burlington along a fun to drive highway 99 is a large river bottom agricultural area that went clear under during the last bad flood. Most of the low areas have levies, but they do not always holder.

people from chicago run the drugs in. they are always getting popped by the police. not to say veteran locals dont have their share in that. but a lot of the river towns have seen a plague of chicago based guns and drugs. a lot has changed since you last were here though. updates of downtown. new roads and new/ revitalized buildings. downtown has become more of a populated hangout like it was back in the day. lofts, bars, resturants, random shops. airb, etc. next time your around check out crapo park and mosquitto park. great high views overlooking the river. snake alley, bluff road (which in the video you turned to the highway before hand and missed it). great scenic drive.

Crime in this town has an interesting history. In the 20s it was a place to chill if things were too hot in Chicago. Capone rented cabins in the island adjacent to downtown in the Mississippi. There was some jurisdictional confusion that played to their favor. During Prohibition Burlington was the hub of a wheel that placed it in equal distance to much larger towns. Illegal booze and slot machines were warehoused here for eventual distribution elsewhere. The point is that crime in this city still follows the same pattern. Criminals from Chicago and St. Louis use it as kind of a safe house when they need to leave their primary territory. Drugs rather than booze move through this town as well and for the same reasons as alcohol once did. Many fortune 500 companies have left and incentive is low in the schools. There's little future here and the smart kids leave. The "non hard chargers" are left behind to disrupt classrooms and push up the crime levels.
