Objectivity. I would love to have a mathematician go over this "proof" (in these documents) on Numberphile. It surly would be a great educational video on how to do proper math. Thanks.
@Slimzie Maygen "Change the value of Pi to suit your needs and the task is completed." Why didn't we think of that before? So we could just change the value of 3 if we need to. Or 10. Or 1. Why, there's a whole new mathematics out there!!! Fred
@Slimzie Maygen *Circumference of circle and the shortest edge length of the mentioned Kepler right triangle are both equal to 12.* Both equal to 12?! And where did you get that from ?
This guy is AWESOME! Calcutta in the mid 1800's. Imagine someone this motivated today. Charles Hudson (active 1825-1836) British civil servant based in India. The Calcutta Monthly Journal and General Register for 1836 notes a functionary of that name as ‘head uncovenanted assistant in the Office of the Civil Auditor.’ Hudson sent several letters and papers to Thomas Young at the Royal Society in the period 1825-1830 mainly on inventions and his business address is given as ‘at the Accountant General’s Office’ None of these papers were published, but are preserved in the archives as AP/12/11-13. Hudson published his ideas independently as A new and demonstrative solution of the geometric quadrature of the circle and of the geometric mean… by Charles Hudson, of Calcutta (Calcutta, printed by Andrew D'Souza, c.1831).
To say Boole "influenced what we do now with computers" is something of a huge understatement. Boolean logic is at the very foundation of how digital computers function and there's absolutely no sign that it will change any time soon.
"The Bacon Cipher---the tastiest of all the ciphers." So nice to see Dr. Grime on here, and really lovely for Brady and Keith to pull out items that would be of special interest to him. :)
But there doesn't seem to be a "v" in the alphabet at the top, so I guess that it _is_ supposed to say "over" but they either just didn't use "v" back then or he just wanted to save some space
If I had to guess, using what someone said (u & v possibly being interchangeable) and the fact that phonetically arr is essentially the same as are (pirate speak lol) this becomes “Beware of this be are who is sent as a spy over you” I’m not to sure about the “this be are who” since it doesn’t make much sense (maybe it’s supposed to be something referencing the reader being a spy?) but the last part definitely makes sense.
"I've seen the Clangers" Yep, incontrovertible proof that the moon is inhabited. Although I can't recall the apollo astronauts commenting on the presence of a Soup Dragon at all.
+Kaedenn Proof comes down to transcendentality of Pi. (See original numberphile video on that for why) And if you want a video breakdown of the proof that Pi is transcendental... Yeah trust me you don't. It may be a little bit too complicated for numberphile. Proving transcendentally is not easy. At all.
Slimzie, I don't know which of you are wrong, but Grime talks about area, and you talk about perimeter. Maybe I lost something like "with same perimeter AND area".
I've been watching this channel for a while now. Seen most videos at least twice. I love it. But something has just suddenly struck me about it. (Call me slow if you want.) No music. Now I've finally noticed it, I just have to comment on how much better that makes this channel IMO. So many popularization of [x] channels think that adding music (usually at completely unnecessary volume and badly mixed) make things more accessible and entertaining. You seem to have taken the approach that the _subject_ should be the interesting part. And you are completely right; it is. And with nothing to distract from it, the subject shines. The fact that it's taken me months to even notice there was no music possibly proves the point; it is _not_ needed if the content holds the viewers attention. GJ.
All those ſs remind me of my favorite underhanded Futurama joke, "That's just how we write our s's, you ſtupid ſhithead." (pronounced as if ſ was read as f)
I thought this was a numberphile video, and was confused because numberphile already did squaring the circle. Also, I’ve always wanted SingingBanana 🎤🍌 in an Objectivity video!
Did James already do a White Gloves of Destiny? I can't recall! Those are my favorite episodes, so I hope Brady manages to do as many as possible. I think it's an amazing way of showing the breadth and depth of the archive!
The dots on the cypher say: "Beware of this bear r who is sent as a spy ouer you" ...huh, I just noticed that there's no "V" in the letters at the top, IDK if that's because they didn't use "v" back then or just to save some space, but I guess that is supposed to say "over"...and the extra "r" might just be a mistake, IDK Now that I think of it, the message is reminiscent of mccarthyism during the Cold War when Americans thought that Soviets (the bear is the national animal of Russia) were spying on them...except that this was made 250 years before so...interesting
r + (1/9)r approximates the square root of ((L²)/2) Where the circumference of a circle with radius "r" approximates the perimeter of a square with side length "L". This is squaring the circle. Always approximates because of pi.
Probably said already, but the idea of the Earth being a Planet wasn't just something to prove, but genuinely novel until the Copernican model of the Solar System.
Could you square it if you involved i? In another problem we saw dr Grime use i to jump in a sequence in the normal plane. Something with a cone where you went into i then back to the normal plane. Could it have been 2016?
I love the part where they have to prove the Earth is a planet. It's what separates pragmatism from dogmatism. Round Earth pragmatism vs. Flat-earth dogma.
By popular demand, some accompanying documents can be found here: www.bradyharanblog.com/blog/squaring-the-circle-the-documents
Slimzie Maygen Haha. I've seen this "proof" before.
Objectivity. I would love to have a mathematician go over this "proof" (in these documents) on Numberphile. It surly would be a great educational video on how to do proper math. Thanks.
So, if things don't add up, just re-define the value of Pi to suit your needs and voilà.
@Slimzie Maygen "Change the value of Pi to suit your needs and the task is completed."
Why didn't we think of that before? So we could just change the value of 3 if we need to. Or 10. Or 1.
Why, there's a whole new mathematics out there!!!

*Circumference of circle and the shortest edge length of the mentioned Kepler right triangle are both equal to 12.*
Both equal to 12?!
And where did you get that from ?
I haven't even watched the video yet, but we need a LOT MORE JAMES! Either on Numberphile or his own channel SingingBanana.
MORE DR JAMEEEEES!
Yes we missing him? He haven't done on his channel. ...
I wish the supposed method of squaring the circle with that gizmo had been presented.
Maybe Keith couldn't find the letters...
Sounds like something they would do on Numberphile, and they definetely should. We are sort of left hanging here.
yes, i want to know too. a pretty box is not enough.

wait few months and files of replica of it will be flying on thingiverse

It's interesting though that "s" used to be written as "f" without the cross in the middle.
I actually love James Grime. I want him to talk to me about maths stuff all day
Numberphile video series "apparently quite good", what a humble brag haha
Or would that be a brag humble?
But it is quite good, (so more a statement of fact than a humble brag.)
Best line.
7:04 In Italian we use the methaphor "squaring the circle" (quadratura del cerchio) to mean a perfect solution to a given problem
TheDatolo97
Interesting 👌👍 Different mentalities accentuate different aspects of the same matter 😉
I could watch and listen to you guys for hours.
We have plenty more videos on the channel.
The cypher at 4:30 spells :
"bewareofthisbearrwhoissentasaspyoueryou"
But there doesn't seem to be a "v" in the alphabet at the top, so I guess that it _is_ supposed to say "over" but they either just didn't use "v" back then or he just wanted to save some space
I'm not a historian but I think u and v were still interchangeable in those days
If I had to guess, using what someone said (u & v possibly being interchangeable) and the fact that phonetically arr is essentially the same as are (pirate speak lol) this becomes
“Beware of this be are who is sent as a spy over you” I’m not to sure about the “this be are who” since it doesn’t make much sense (maybe it’s supposed to be something referencing the reader being a spy?) but the last part definitely makes sense.
I think this is :
"Beware of this bear who is sent as a spy over you"
"bearer" most likely, which is interesting as it would imply the person delivering the warning is also the subject of the warning! :P
I love that you can see at 8:40 when Keith seems to make the connection between using As and Bs with binary!
You guys are simply awesome
"I've seen the Clangers"
Yep, incontrovertible proof that the moon is inhabited. Although I can't recall the apollo astronauts commenting on the presence of a Soup Dragon at all.
nasa cover up?
Must Be!
Clangers are the bomb. Got to love this Aussie-British channel.
This is so cool! And seeing you all together in this channel is awesome :-D
Thanks. Glad you liked it.
So when can we expect an analysis of the quadrature of the circle "proof", Dr Grime? I'd love to see the logic involved and where the fallacy lies.
Slimzie Maygen all work and no play makes jack a dull boy. all work and no play makes jack a dull boy
+Slimzie Maygen wtf

No I think he's wondering where the fallacy lies in this supposed proof.
Slimzie, I don't know which of you are wrong, but Grime talks about area, and you talk about perimeter. Maybe I lost something like "with same perimeter AND area".
All those S's written as F's makes me read that text with a Daffy Duck voice.
Hey I came here for James but now I’m subscribed
Can we get why he thought he had solved it?
That's what I was waiting for
PURPLE GLOVES OF POWER vs WHITE GLOVES OF DESTINY, has there been such a conflict!?!?!
Top 10 anime fights of all time.
Keith and James, what a masterpiece. Good job, keep it up.
Did Keith pick these books? Beautiful choices, as always.
Yes Keith suggested them based on a few tips about James’ interests.
Objectivity does he know every book in the library?
I've been watching this channel for a while now. Seen most videos at least twice. I love it.

This video is so cute. It makes my heart warm to see these guys just bonding over this stuff.
Need an hour of Keith reading a story or documents, would be ultimate asmr
Yay, I love Dr. Grime!
Crossover episode, how about that.
Dr.Grime, happy to see you in this video!
Boole, after whom ‘Boolean’ is named :O
And the term "boolin"
Yeet.
Audio so crisp it's making my ears quiver. Keith should do audio books.
I would deeply appreciate more of James Grime in Numberphile videos
Mah boy James Numero Prime
All those ſs remind me of my favorite underhanded Futurama joke, "That's just how we write our s's, you ſtupid ſhithead." (pronounced as if ſ was read as f)
Check out "Fad Eyed Fal" by Benny Hill.....
James!!!! He's my favorite numberphile!
Such a high density of coolness in this video
I thought this was a numberphile video, and was confused because numberphile already did squaring the circle. Also, I’ve always wanted SingingBanana 🎤🍌 in an Objectivity video!

That object against the red background of the box would make a cool flag design.
6:12 the moment brady realises someone has finally trumped in naming things
Thought I clicked a numperphile video. Not dissapointed though.
Is this the same John Wilkins who created the Philosophical Language, one of the first constructed languages?
The purple gloves of WAAAAAHHHHHHHH
I really don't understand why this show isn't more popular.
Exactly because of that, because it is a show and nothing more.
Keith and James? Fml, this is heaven.
Brady, you know you're the real star of Numberphile
"What's in the box?!?!?!??!"
Fun...thanks everyone...love these
Great. Cheers for watching.
0:59 y(olo)! even the old masters knew it
"The tastiest of all the cyphers" FTW
I love Brady trying to be objective about Numberphile... ;)
James Grime is the best ever!
Brady's hair in this video is weirdly perfect
Is a "white gloves of destiny with James Grime" coming up?
Coincidentally i was just watching James video on Squaring the Circle a few days ago
I want to see a numberfile video discussing the proof encompacted in that object.
"Kieth, Whats in the box?" needs to be on a T Shirt now
I love the coincidence that earlier this night, I was having a conversation with my wife on search engine's current lack of Boolean search terms.
I hope James has a White Gloves of Destiny coming too.
Maybe...
Presentation is everything
1:50 *Chuckles mathematically*
Now that James has been on Objectivity, we need to bring Cliff Stoll next. Anyone agreeing on this, too? :-)
I'm not sure the internet could handle it. I wonder if TRS has any papers about non-Euclidean manifolds? Surely. ;)
The dots on the cypher say:
"Beware of this bear r who is sent as a spy ouer you"
...huh, I just noticed that there's no "V" in the letters at the top, IDK if that's because they didn't use "v" back then or just to save some space, but I guess that is supposed to say "over"...and the extra "r" might just be a mistake, IDK

I once had someone ask me if there was ever a book that made me cry. I said, "Trigonometry."😅
James should get his own gloves. The marigolds of mathematics
John Wilkins shows up in the Baroque Cycle/Cryptonomicon books by Neal Stephenson, which might be what is tickling the back of James' mind...?
If you grab a rope with both ends tied you can make any form and get the same area?
r + (1/9)r approximates the square root of ((L²)/2)
Where the circumference of a circle with radius "r" approximates the perimeter of a square with side length "L". This is squaring the circle. Always approximates because of pi.
"...which apparently is quite good" is quite good. :-)
I'd like to learn more about Keith the librarian. How does one become a librarian for the Royal Society?
Indeed, in many programming languages, the basic data type to represent a true or false value is called... a *boolean* value
Keith has such a pleasant voice
At 1:09, isn't it that Thales was the first person to put up that kind of deduction(modus ponens)?
"The Earth may be a planet" ahahah
Objectivity’s new graphic logo!
6:05 He put Brad Pitt to shame with that delivery.
And, how does the proof of squaring go? I mean this one in this video? Where does it break down?
That text by John Wilkins is fascinating. It's available on archive d0t 0rg
Ooo, Dr Grime!
All they needed was a bit of string. Then you can get 1/2 the circumference and avoid the transcendental number issue.
Great video.
YES finally !
Probably said already, but the idea of the Earth being a Planet wasn't just something to prove, but genuinely novel until the Copernican model of the Solar System.
I really like Keith's ring!
Hierarchy of Glove confirmed!
I found that old prints really have long S's (ſ). That's interesting.
Besides the Bacon cipher, there is also the Pigpen cipher.
Learned about Boole in high school and the Boolean algebra that is used by computers
Yes but how does the pretty thing work Brady? The channel is made to satisfy curiosity and now im dying from it. Was this the goal? Cuz Well played.
MichaelKingsfordGray i know you cant square a circle. Just wondering how it was "supposed" to work.
I love james
Wow! You look great, Dr. Haran! Fitotron5000 for life! Love, Tim
19th century James!
Could you square it if you involved i?
In another problem we saw dr Grime use i to jump in a sequence in the normal plane. Something with a cone where you went into i then back to the normal plane. Could it have been 2016?

"star of the numberphile series"
Tell that in front of Matt Parker, Tony Padilla, Tadashi Tokieda, Cliff Stoll, etc.
2:03 : Doesn’t it look like the wave function symmetrization for identical particles quantum sistems? What’s that really?
really? some more detail about the clicky tile? like what are the lines on the squared circle, and how close it is to being correct?
Infinity war is the most ambitious crossover
in hi-
It's GRIMES, the Singing Banana!
Nice T-Shirt you are wearing there, Brady.
Thanks. Golden ratio seeds!
The T-Shirt is the real Numberphile crossover.
I'm surprised they let you touch it w/out gloves.
