All of the LoTR movies came out on my mom's BDay. We'd get them for her birthday present. The Prequal, though, 'The Hobbit' is not. But we're giving a trip to see it to her for an early birthday present.
I said that about HP7 but their it worked out quite well and (back to the Hobbit) for example the battle is very detailed in the book so you could make one movie out of it without problems ... I think it'll work out well :)
