How to get back in when your canoe flips!

  • Large and Heavier Canoes are hard to flip. This is a technique that's a bit easier to manage.
    It's used if you find yourself far from shore and cant swim to it.
    Since this canoe is about 16'6 long - the Capistrano Flip Method doesn't really work for me.
    In this video I show how to empty a swamped canoe, flip it over, and then get in - all in deep water.
    Best piece of advice I can give here is to practice the technique so you can stay calm and perform it if you ever need to!
    If your looking for the Bailing Pouch I use, you can find it here:

      Be super careful pulling on those middle bars, they are only there so the canoe doesn't collapse in on itself they aren't meant to be pulled on like that and I've seen them get ripped out before grabbing them while climbing in.

    Water can always try to kill you unexpectedly. I hit a huge dead tree sideways in Rattlesnake Creek, right at the mouth where it enters the Clark Fork. It was my 1st time in a shallow kayak, and I planned a quick trial run, and the creek was shallow. I had trouble steering, realized I had little to no control, caught the fast part, got sideways,
    & hit a huge snag, flipped & got pinned. I was a quick second thinking "well, this can't be right, it's shallow, and I'm pinned upside down under water." I got out, but my boat was sunk in the current & I was about to lose it forever. I cut up my fingers holding on to the boat, finally got hold of the rope, waded the 50 yards upstream to my house dragging the half-swamped kayak, put on some bandaids, took out an ad in the newspaper, & sold it. Goodbye, sweet little blue deathtrap.

    Best way to protect yourselves from canoe flips: Don't get in a stupid canoe

  • @jlondon1441
    @jlondon1441 ปีที่แล้ว

    I was taught to push down on one end, raising the other end out of the water and then flip. Almost want it to stand straight up. Then enter the canoe by pulling yourself up from the end, straddling the point, using the leftover water as a ballast. Once inside, you bail out the water or just paddle it to shore with the water and empty there. Hell, we used to race the canoes completely swamped.

    The cool thing about two person canoe rescues is you don't get the water in the boat the first time and your partner can counterbalance to make re-entry more easy. Thanks, Boy Scouts.

    i think the best way to re enter a canoe of that size is to go from the front or back and lift yourself up onto it from straight on. it takes a lot of muscle but if you can do it, youll be able to do it solo or with others.

    In a kayak it’s always graceful when you roll just to flick and you’re back in the game. I don’t think I’ve ever gracefully got back in a canoe after tipping it. Being tall with long legs just makes all the floundering to get in look all the worse…

    I've just dragged it back to shore for a complete re-set once or twice. There was one time when my battlecanoes partner forgot how to swim as soon as we both hit the water. That was fun.

    I usually push the rear down between my legs and slide on top like doing a weird workout dip. Caution careful of the ball sack when executing this maneuver. Then there’s no need to almost flip yourself over again and have to bail out 5 gallons of water

    I would of done a sitting roll entry back into it, from a instructor. Also remember to always stay with your boat, paddle isn’t the number 1 priority. You should always have a spare attached to the boat, a paddle without a boat is abit useless.
    Either way great demonstration thank you.

    May I ask - No airbags in canoe?
    Yes I see the moulded section - in the UK we would still add airbags to ensure flotation

    I use an outrigger on my canoe. It adjusts in and out for various conditions and situation. Haven't had a rollover since I installed it, even with grandkids jumping all over and even adults that don't know how to balance. Might be something for folks to look into. It doesn't take up much space or add a lot of weight, about 10lb.

  • @DesieveWagner

    This is an interesting way to self rescue. It's way easier to just put your weight on one end of the boat the other end well raise out of the water. Grab a side rail and roll to the side. The boat well Bob up as u roll removing alot more water then this method. It's super easy I learned when I was 11 and like 80lbs at a summer camp. This method is great for people who can lift the boat but it's alot more work for no reason and saving energy in a rescue situation is always the best choice

    It helps when you are in 4 feet of water. I tried getting back in a small inflatable we rented in the Caribbean. I did but it took 5 minutes. When you have nothing to stand on, you struggle to simply keep your head above water.

    Haha, sometimes its worse with help. Boy Scout canoe trip and had to qualify as a group to make sure we could pull each other into the canoe if one fell out. Well some wimp couldn't pull me in so my much larger and few years older cousin shows him how it's done and throws me half way over the far rail.

    I saw someone do it very differently.
    They turned the canoe right side up. Slipped themself into it and got lengthwise in the canoe and down in the water. They then splashed violently to throw a low of the water out.

      @TheBearEssentials  ปีที่แล้ว
