  • The machines are taking over .. even in rural north Thailand ... here is a machine that plants rice ...
I was interesting to see several people enter the rice fields after the planting ... to manually fill the gaps ... there may yet be opportunities for us humans.
Am a little saddened to miss seeing manual planting ... but there must be less people suffering from back aches.
    -------------
A collection of videos covers most of the of the process of cultivating and growing rice ... they have taken several years to make ... and there may be more.
I live in Chiangmai, North Thailand surrounded by rice fields ... and just looking out the bedroom window in the morning has often resulted in me grabbing the camera and rushing out to capture another edisode.

Very glad to see such improvements. My grandmother has always reminded us how difficult it was for the farmers to plant and harvest the rice. Much gratitude.

I wish I had one of those when I was a kid. I spent 14 years of my life planting and harvesting rice. Together with corn, it is my most favorite work. The plant itself is beautiful and the care that goes to it, and the millions the rice feeds, that is mind boggling to me. That machine will save the health of millions of laborers across the world.

They're not grow on anything special but seeding tray with a small bit of dirt. What you see are the roots excessively interlocking with each other rather than soil. The machine pierces the mat like a needle without damage and wiggles/pulls free a small bundle of rich and shoves it into the dirt soil. The good thing about the machine is no more people bending their backs. Bad thing no more people bending their backs, since most are now out of work... due to one person being able to do all that.

The only people that should be sad that the old ways of rice planting are gone are chiropractors.

Planting it manually sucks. Harvesting it manually with a hand sickle sucks ten times as much. Especially when you are 6'2".

Of course they have a machine planting the rice ... if you had to work planting rice you'd think it was deep and meaningful for about 3 minutes, then you'd never want to do it again. You would also not want to pay a living wage for someone planting rice by hand either.

I know the video was done in 2011. I don't know how exposed Shamblesguru was to the rice industry. People were using planes to disperse seeds in the 70s. His surprise was a surprise to me.
Planting rice manually is a killer on the back. To me there is no joy in seeing that image.
