We've always said "don't worry it's just a Garter Snake". As kids we always picked them up. Didn't know they had (although benign to humans) any venom at all.
They're basically a friendly type snake towards us. They generally do not bite but they can give off a foul odor if frightened or threatened. The species that we have in Florida is very pretty. They're not as friendly as the Eastern Indigo though. I've seen both on our property but the Indigo primarily eats other snakes and that includes garters. The Eastern Indigo's on our property all seem to know us and make no attempt to run away or hide. We often find them at certain times of year on our porch and we either ignore them or sometimes pick them up they do not seem to mind being handled at all. They have very strong jaws but I've never even seen their teeth.
You are fortunated to be able to see Eastern indigos on your property! They are one of the most spectacular of the North American snakes without question.
Enumerating the information .... 12, 13, 14 ... gets a little tedious. I recommend a more flowing narrative and maybe add some VIDEO. Then you would have something more appealing as a documentary.
