I’m 51 in the San Francisco bay area. My female doctor actually got mad when i pushed her about doing HRT in the perimenopausal stage. Her ego was more important than my health. what?!? so upsetting. i’ve just gotten HRT through a telehealth service. nearly all symptoms gone in one month! so hope the darkness around woman’s health is lifted by the time my 23 yr old is going through the change.

I had a similar experience. The doctor actually said that HRT is the stuff of witch doctors. She then went on to suggest various over the counter remedies for each of my symptoms. I couldn't believe it. She totally dismissed all of my concerns. Shameful. Here's to being heard!

There are so many "academic doctors" (as one rude gyno referred to herself as), who know so little about menopause and have the ancient mentality that HRT is dangerous. I suffered for 3 years without HRT and had no quality of life. It caused damage to my body, I cannot undo. It still upsets me that no doctor would listen or was hesitant in addressing the hormone issues. You cannot just slap a patch on. It's not a "one size fits all" problem. Finally, found a doctor (out of pocket unfortunately) who has my HRT compounded strictly to my hormonal needs. But it took me 10 years to find him!!!!! This needs to change!

thank you for the information. I am a nurse practitioner and have been singing the praises of estrogen replacement therapy for years. I have gotten a lot of blowback from local physicians. I frequently use your recommendations to have my patience, watch menopause, Taylor, and some of the physicians that you have mentioned. I tell them that this is the best way to convince their doctors that their information is medically appropriate and that it is helpful. I am 72 years old. Have a family history of osteoporosis and I’ve been on HRT since I was 48 years old because of that I do not have osteoporosis. I also do not have heart disease and I do not have the brain fog and the memory difficulties associated with menopause. Keep educating everyone it is so important!

What kind of HRT are you on? Bioidential? Pill form or vaginal? I am having vaginal burning and irration. I have had every test imagined, and I was diagnosed with vaginal dryness. I also have aching bones, headaches, and brain fog. So, my doctor prescribed vaginal estrogen. I am 60 and still have my uterus, and I am a bit overweight. After reading the side effects, I am terrified to take it. Any suggestions?

Can’t you just prescribe it for them? My NP prescribes Estrogen patch & progesterone. She was happy to prescribe it at the FIRST sign of perimenopause (joint pain, hot flashes). I consider myself incredibly lucky and likely of the first generation of women who won’t have to live a day without hormones.

I am 47 and started HRT a month ago. It has been a gamechanger for my perimenopause. I sleep like a baby, wake up well rested, the constant urination stopped, and my brain fog is gradually fading. My PMS symptoms have improved and my period is lighter. I never had hot flashes. I am also working on getting my Vitamin D and Ferritin into optimal ranges because they are on the lower end of normal. My Primary Care Physican tried to say my bloodwork was fine. I use MIDI and they take my insurance. The Nurse Practioner that I see virtually is awesome! I do 0.025 estradiol patches that I change 2 times a week and a 200 mg progesterone capsule. I never had any spotting. When I don't forget or fall asleep beforehand, I take magnesium glycinate. I am working on my gut health and eating more because I can go all day without eating and days not eating if I am not feeling well. HRT has far more pros than cons for me, which is why I decided to do it!

I have read many of the responses and have not seen pelvic floor physical therapy(PFPT) mentioned for the incontinence issues. First I would like to thank Angie for her research based information and being so generous in sharing her own experiences and just getting the information out there regarding women's health. I have been a PFPT for over 25 years. Please ask your Dr for a PT referral and get your pelvic floor assessed as well. You may need strengthening or you may be holding the muscles tight and need to learn to let go first and then work on proprioception of the muscles. Some muscles (internally) may need help in "waking up" and some may need to let go. Core strength, glute strength, fluid intake, the timing of voiding(awareness of "just in case voiding" , frequent voiding or waiting too long), correct breathing, how to lift properly can all be very helpful also. Vaginal estrogen cream is a game changer for many, but make sure you know what is happening with the pelvic floor muscles as well.

What was shocking to me is that, as you said, DEXA scans are not recommended until women reach the age of 65! And the way they are diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis is when we fall and have a fracture! This is NUTS!

I had my last period at 47. I'm 52 now and have never been on HRT. I thought I had it pretty easy, until I developed vaginal atrophy, which isn't often talked about. It has been devastating to be honest. I had to do all the research myself, my Doctor just prescribed me creams. I've recently started a course of Oestrogen pessaries under a new Doctor, it's helped with the dryness, but unfortunately, the atrophy can't be reversed.
I wish I had known this before as HRT in the early stages would of helped immensely.
I still think many Doctors aren't properly educated on other symptoms associated with the Menopause.

It took me several years of complaining to my doctors every time I saw them but I finally am over that. I am on Mimvey HRT & also estrogen cream. For this problem it's best to do both. Older women aren't even a side note in the traditional medicine field. Doctors have uniformly minimalized my pain and denied I even have it. I have had to fight for every test, for every mri. It's been maddening. I'm going to try to save myself and my sister. I bike and walk but if I do too much it really hearts and I dont want to take pain pills. I have a cardiologist appt soon for chronic overwhelming severe exhaustion and weakness the cause of which is yet to be discovered despite it taking 90% of my health and vigor away. Thank you for this video

Dr. Stacey Sims is amazing and opened my eyes to a lot of things, especially in regards to nutrition and exercise for women and the fact most of what we know about these topics is based on studies done on Men NOT women, she is focusing on researching women. I’ve been doing resistance training and HIT but I’m going to turn it up a notch and do more heavier strength training, and more sprint interval training. I’m on HRT, just estradiol, because of symptoms and a hx of cardiovascular issues in my family. Thanks for being this topic up. Women need to advocate for a stronger recognition in research for all aspects of women’s health. As Dr Sims says, women are not small men.

I was on HRT for about 15 years but I started having break through bleeding and when tested my uterus lining had thickened. I didn’t know you could have polyps in your uterus but I did. I was told that they were caused by too much estrogen . The test came back normal which I am thankful for. I have now switched to testosterone as it turns into estrogen, which was a surprise! I have used vagafem for years and I love that it is a small tablet instead of messy cream. I am not sure coming off estrogen completely is the right thing but for now I am not spotting so that is great. I would love to know more about the role that testosterone plays in all of this.

I was told that I was not a candidate for HRT because of breast cancer in my family. I would like to know if this is still true. The Mirena coil does not contain a bio- or body-identical progesterone. It contains a synthetic progestin which is not natural. We have progesterone receptors all over our body so it is not just beneficial for protecting the uterus. Progesterone promotes new bone growth. Oestrogen only slows down bone loss; it does not promote new bone growth. There are three oestrogens; estradiol (which is the most potent), estrone which (which is less potent) and estriol (which is the least potent but the safest). Bio- and body-identical progesterone, as well as its many other beneficial properties, helps the body use fat as energy, unlike oestrogen which stores fat on the body. When we age oestrogen production falls quite considerably but progesterone falls to zero. Without progesterone, therefore, the body is hormonally imbalanced. Lastly, oestrogen is an inflammatory hormone and when not balanced with progesterone (bio- or body-identical) causes cells to grow out of control and this can cause cells to mutate into cancerous cells.

I went through perimenopause with few issues in 2018…then at age 54 I had some uterine cysts removed and suddenly symptoms became horrible. Like-am I going to be able to continue working horrible. Doctors say brain fog and vocabulary loss is not a menopause symptom…but they are certainly symptoms of disrupted sleep. Not getting adequate sleep due to night sweats is incredibly destructive to a normal healthy work/life day. I was scared to death since I’m the only source of income I have. My gyn was supportive and I’ve been on HRT with a vaginal estrogen ring plus progesterone IUD. I LOVE this combo. I’m now 59 and last year my GyN said she may want me to come off at age 60 (in 7 months…). I literally cannot fathom going off and living a normal life. Thanks to everyone for sharing. Hi Angie. I never went through menopause. At 42, my periods just stopped. Bloodwork showed that I was menopausal. They called it Premature Ovarian Failure. I did research, and went on the Vivelle Dot, and Prochieve Vaginal gel. I felt great. Unfortunately, I was taken off of everything at 48. I wish I would have had a second opinion. I would have stayed on HRT for life. I'm glad that you advocated for HRT. We have a high rate of heart disease in my family as well.
To this day, I've never had a hot flash, but now at 64, I've struggled with the menopausal belly fat. It's frustrating. I've increased weight workouts, I'm not eating more than usual.
I did have osteoporosis, which I've reversed with Prolia and weight bearing exercises.
I do take 2,000 IUs of Vitamin D, and drink calcium fortified almond milk, plus spinach on most days. Tofu, I also do zinc.
As usual, you are a fountain of information.
That's fabulous that you'll be doing a video on Menopause.
My question is what can I do to stop my body weight from shifting, and what can I do about the fluffy tummy?

Estring is the best thing for vaginal estrogen. I hope people become more aware of it because it is so much easier than using the cream every night, much less mess, much less waste of a plastic applicator, etc. I highly recommend looking into Estring. Sometimes I decide to use a little bit of estrogen on top of it with a very expensive insert, but for the most Estring takes care of everything I need . The North American menopause society, and I believe the international menopause society both do not recommend testosterone therapy for women and the doctor I follow on social media, who is very heavy in science and research (Dr.Jen Gunter and has some best selling books) always says to run away from a doctor if they want to prescribe you bioidentical testosterone from a compound pharmacy because those are not FDA approved.

I've been on testosterone pellets for 15 years (I'm 77 now). I also get low dose Estradiol with that - I'm still working and it helps me think - tried without, but I really need it. I was on the estradiol patch for 10 years, and was fine until my testosterone dropped to zero, lost my pubic hair (TMI), and lost my interest in everything, and low libido. My doctor was trained by Rebecca Glaser, a pioneer in the field of testosterone pellets for women.

Angie, that was great content! Thank you! One thing about urinary incontinence is that high insulin can also affect the bladder. When us women go into menopause, we are more prone to insulin resistance. This cannot only cause urinary incontinence but also having to get up in the middle of the night a lot to urinate. The added localized estrogen will help as well, but keeping insulin low will also make a big difference. It sounds like you’ve cut way back on the sugar so you should see a change.

I am turning 52 this year, and my bones are super strong, I haven"t had my menopause yet, and I am super healthy. I would like Dr. Haver's insights for those of us late to the HRT post-menopause and how we can still benefit. What an exciting opportunity for you! BTW, I just listened to an interview with her last week on Dr Dhru Purohit's podcast and it was really good

It also doesn't help that perimenopause and menopause come right at the most stressful time of life and out of left field.
One minute you are of childbearing age taking care of your kids and the next you have the drama of teens and young adults plus the care of aging parents and relatives, throw in a pandemic and a spouse retiring plus a college student reluctantly taking a gap year... suddenly i feel like I'm dying and have ABSOLUTELY no idea what's happening. 😢😢😢
Luckily i tweaked my diet to eliminate sugar and anything processed, lost a bit of weight (10 lbs?), and did some intermittent fasting. Almost all the symptoms went away.
In researching i read that our adrenals back up our hormones but not if they're stressed out - how can they not be?!

HRT is a “grower” so women who have had ANY cancer or HPV CANNOT be on HRT. Docs don’t connect these dots or discuss this.
Barbara Taylor and Kirsch have missed the mark on A LOT about menopause. Kitty Anderson, Dr Mathis and Dr Gersh …so far have most impressive protocols info and whole body care. ❤

I started HRT a year ago at 51, while still getting my period. My depression worsened before each period, and I had hair loss, urinary issues, and dryness. Thankfully, my doctor checked my hormones, and with oral and vaginal HRT, I feel much better. I’m nervous about bone density since I stopped lifting weights after two accidents, and being petite doesn’t help.

My urologist, who is a NAM certified doctor prescribed estradiol cream and instructed to put a pea size amount on urethra to prevent the urgency issue you were describing. It worked well. It may be worth discussing with your doctor. 😀

In 2019 I had a total abdominal hysterectomy with both ovaries removed. Surgical menopause at age 43 was not fun so I immediately started HRT pellets (testosterone, estradiol) with oral progesterone. Since then my bone degeneration rapidly increased and two yrs later I had osteophytes all over my c-spine. In addition to bone pain, my skin because very dry and crepy and none of my drs seem concerned or can offer advice. I would love to hear the perspective of your menopause panel as the thought of where my bone health will be in 5yrs scares me and I’m only 48.

Thank you Angie for everything that you do to improve the lives and health of women everywhere. I went through very early menopause without a menstrual cycle for over 12 months at the age of 45 (probably even earlier but I was so not looking for menopause at that age). I truly never received great medical direction, tried a long list of things but ultimately received so much conflicting recommendations that I was never started on HRT. I am now 57 and very concerned for bone health etc and already have bilateral total knee replacements due to osteoarthritis. In the last few years with much more updated info on HRT, I am wondering if it’s too late to start. I’ve been told multiple times that after 10 years of being postmenopausal that the risks outweigh the benefits of HRT. Just wondering if your experts agree?

I would kill to have your t-scores! Please don't worry. You're just fine. I was diagnosed with osteoporosis last year at 51 and already had a score of -3.3 in my spine. Did all the calcium, vitamin D, weight lifting for a year only to find my score this year is -3.7. Terrified my vertebrae are going to crumble. Ugh. I'll start HRT but I wish I'd started years ago.

I’m on oral estrogen and progesterone I have no motivation in life. Not sure what to do. I was also on antidepressant which didn’t help, so doctor told me to eliminate the antidepressant.

I recently got my 3rd Dexascan and the results worsen with each one. It is so frustrating! I takes lots of supplements (10 K D-3, K2, magnesium) and exercise daily. At 61, I am just now starting on HRT via a low dose estrogen patch, oral progesterone and will be incorporating Testosterone in a gummy form. I have been fearful of breast cancer (strong family history of breast cancer) and those fears were echoed over the years by doctors, therefore I never even considered going on HRT until I got this recent bone scan and was told I am on the verge of osteoporosis and that estrogen may stop the progression. I was also told my vitamin D-3 levels were way too high. I am coming to the HRT table very late but am trying to do my very best to stop the leaching of my bone mass. I drink lots of coffee and always believed that as long as it was decaf it wasn't affecting my bones. I have recently learned that the acidity in coffee could be affecting my bone health too so I am swearing off coffee, getting the weighted vest and checking on the rebounder. Thank goodness for the information learned on this channel!!

Fascinating how HRT ( even vaginally) helps reduce post menopausal UTIs by 85%! Also, some people, like myself, get joint pain when taking K2. Strange.

I just wanted to say I have been on the rollercoaster of balancing the HRT levels and Perscriptions and when I switched from a patch to gel tablets my head hit the pillow and GONE until the alarm sounds. I was a good sleeper before perimenopause the beginning journey .. I was a nightmare to live with due to hot sweats and constant waking during the night. Love your channel. I also was advised 4000 of vitamin D for my hair falling out and started k2 after watchching Dr rajani ‘s anti aging supplements and it helping to retain bone loss in your face and prevent sagging. I’m still aging but I know if you read this you will delve right into that and hopefully kill 2 birds with one stone ❤ xx

I am 66. Missed the HRT new therapies. Per Dr. Haver, benefits to start now are minimal and have to be weighed against risk so I have missed the window. No HRT at this point. Also bone density shocked me, did over two years of heavy weightlifting and walking at least 5 miles a day….made no difference. Osteopenia numbers were worse, density continued declining. Younger women are fortunate to have earlier intervention options.

I had no idea so many women are on HRT! I feel completely alone because I honestly feel better at age 57. I started menopause at 48, and had a lot of these symptoms but now, nothing. I am so much more calm and level headed compared to me before menopause. It seems I am alone in this.

Many functional medicine docs says we don’t need to take calcium supplements. We get enough and more could cause heart disease and will need to be on calcium channel blockers. What can also help in osteoporosis is testosterone. I am now taking estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone.

Angie, thank you for shining a light on bone density. So important for all of us women to share.
DEXA Scans don't measure the quality of bones, they only measure how well your bones absorb X-ray. Then they compare your score to a 35 year old's bones.
I agree that weight bearing exercise (using heavy weights, jumping, stomping) will help increase bone mass, as well as eating healthy, getting enough of the right protein, and supplementing with high quality vitamins and minerals.
Our bones are in a constant state of renewal. Bone is living tissue that is constantly being broken down and replaced. Osteoblasts = new cells that form new bones and grow and heal existing bones. Osteoclasts = the body's process of breaking down bone in order to build it up again.
See a functional medicine doctor to get advice, not your usual PCP. Also highly recommend watching Dr. Peter Osborne's video on osteoporosis and bone density. ♥

Hi Angie, I am so looking forward to you interview with Dr. Haver, she is my go-to specialist (as well as most of the other doctors you mentioned - we share the same list😋). I have sooo many questions for Dr. Haver:
    1. Intermittent fasting: Dr. Haver practises the 16-8 eating window and is all for it, because it reduces chronic inflammation. I did the same for over a year, but recently went down to 12-12 or 14-10 after listening to Dr. Sims who says that women should not fast for more than 12 hours because this downregulates thyroid function and also leads to more lean mass loss. So I am confused....is 16-8 or 12-12 the best approach?
    2. HRT: Is it ever too early to start? I know Dr. Haver says "start when you start feeling that something feels off" What if there are no symptoms apart from a change in blood flow (no missed periods yet)? Is that too early? Assuming that someone wants to stay on HRT indefinitely for the health benefits it provides, would more years of exposure to HRT (i.e. starting earlier and not waiting until the last stages of peri) increase breast cancer risk significantly in the long run?
    3. Topical Vaginal Estrogen: would it make sense to start taking it before real issues appear, just as a precaution? Would an early start provide better protection against atrophy further down the line, or does it make no real difference?
It would be great if you could ask her these questions, but even if you don't, it will be a great interview, Dr. Haver is so inspiring! Thank you for interviewing specialists and helping educate women 😍

I used HRT for 5 years because of horrible menopausal symptoms but when I developed breast cancer, invasive ductal carcinoma stage one estrogen and progesterone positive , I had to stop HRT cold turkey. It is not that the HRT caused my breast cancer but it did feed it. So after having a bilateral mastectomy I had so suffer the rebound effects of stopping HRT. No one tells you about what happens when you have to stop HRT. I now use a vaginal estrogen (the only kind that my oncologist will let me have) and Veozah, which has been a lifesaver for the hot flashes. I agree that having estrogen replacement is awesome until you have to stop.

I went to the North American Menopause Society web site and searched for a doctor in my area. I was figuring the doctor being part of this specialist society would be educated and help me get on to HRT. Nope, I did not have symptoms enough to put me on it. I wanted HRT to protect my heart. I also heard that estrogen helps protect women from heart issues and I have a family full of heart problems. Not me yet. I am 62 and can not get on HRT

I have been on oral HRT for about 14 years. I recently had a radical hysterectomy due to fibroids and heavy bleeding. My surgeon told me to discontinue my HRT therapy and all of my symptoms are back with a vengeance. I’m basically in good health but I have a lot of heart disease and cancer in my family. I really want to continue my HRT. I would love your doctor’s advice. Thank you in advance for asking this question for me!
