My humble opinion is that Fukue now knows that all those years that she was bullied and felt probably alone, and surely sad, there was her childhood friend on the other side of the world thinking of her, and writing songs about her, trying to find her, and willing to fly around the world and put all the effort you guys did to find her. That must have been a beautiful healing feeling for the little girl inside her that went through so much. Both the actual real life events and the film are absolute gems, and hope all involved are great, and so glad that Fukue is doing so well.
    Thank you guys.

I had a pen pal for many years in the 80’s… being I’m male and she female, we quit writing as adults. For my part, I knew she was married, kids, etc. so I figured it would come across wrong, or hard to explain to a husband, if we still communicated as much as we did as teens. Anyway, in this age of technology, I did Google her name in 2012 just to see if there was any info on her or a Facebook page, etc. out of curiosity. Well sadly, she died in a head on collision the previous year. But the reason I even mention it is to share that her mom and I are now friends and she was so happy when I reached out to her. My own mom died 18 years ago, so it’s been a welcoming friendship that came to be out of something tragic.

I literally found the original documentary tonight, watched it and then watched this follow up. (July 19, 2020)
A BIG WELL DONE to you ALL. You made a truly moving and marvellous short documentary that I could actually watch over and over. It really was a sad yet beautiful story of love and friendship that we don't see or hear much of (right again Jess) and luckily for us but mostly for Jess and Fukue it has a happy ending.
You were commenting how ppl from all over the world watched it so... I was born, grew up and live in Australia 🇦🇺
I think Jess is SO RIGHT in saying what she did about the images and videos etc that her parents gave you to make this movie. They took us all back to those times in our childhood’s and so we related to the story in a much much more familiar way than if those hadn’t been included! So a massive THANK YOU TO JESS’ PARENTS 🥰!!
I have wondered Jess, has Fukue ever tell you the story of her childhood? I understand from everything you have all said here, including Ed, that the Japanese culture is very different to our western culture. That they are a very private society, one in which you don’t ask personal questions, that that’s considered very rude.
Obviously though that part of the story is still a quite compelling mystery, at least to me because I grew up in an impoverished family although likely not as bad as it seems Fukue had.
I said that about Japanese society because I guess I’m not expecting you to actually tell us what she said if she did tell you, but I was simply wondering if she ever solved that mystery for you?
Lastly I would like to say that there are probably more stories like this or stories of lost relatives so maybe, which this wretched Covid-19 Pandemic is over you could maybe make some more of these?
I know there are stories because my mum came from Austria, my dad from Denmark and on my mum’s side her dad was Czech and her mum was Hungarian. I have NEVER met any of my relatives that live in those countries or even know if they are still there. I’m pretty sure there more people like Jess and Fukue and me and my lost relatives out there that could be a treasure trove of really moving, watchable and popular short documentaries.
    * I’m pretty sad and disappointed that you didn’t include a link to Jess’ TH-cam channel. How about editing it and putting that in for her? After all, without her there would be no story!?!
Thanks again to all of you for this beautiful story 💋🇦🇺

I really appreciate you sharing in such a well-spoken way 🤗 And, i also appreciate you mentioning the absence of a link to my TH-cam channel or website on this vid and the original, because I did ask them nicely to do so on multiple occasions, and with this film having catapulted CBC docs’ subscribership from 6k to 150k, they can sure afford to share the wealth, and help me get to 5k 😂😭.

My Babushka, Dedushka (Grandma and Grandpa) and I immigrated here from Russia in the early 60's. My parents both died when I was 4, so my Grandparents became my Guardians. 3 years later my Grandparents passed away 6 months apart and I was put in foster care. A couple years later, I was adopted by the best Dad anyone could ever ask for. He took it upon himself to find any living relatives and my neighbor who I grew up with. Unfortunately, he had no such luck but, that's okay. For him too go that far for me, meant the world to me. Rest In Paradise Dad, I love you so much.

The team did an amazing job on this documentary! I thought the editing did a great job of succinctly and conveying a decades-long mess of emotions and information. The music and choice to use Jess' work in the end credit music was perfect. I really appreciated your Q&A on it as well. You had great points about the challenges of language for a delicate topic involving privacy, the good fortune to find such willingness and receptiveness as well as the storybook happy conclusion, and the relative rarity of media stories in both non/fiction about deep lifelong friendships. It did occur to me while watching that Jess's parents had preserved an incredible amount of pre-Internet videos and photos, though I didn't think about the narrative impact until Jess mentioned it. I'm roughly the same age, and using my own experience for comparison, I barely existed in any media records until about 2006. :D

Jess is so right about the VHS tapes being such an integral part of the video, reliving those memories with her was magical. I wonder how the Story was received in Japan ? Can you tell ? It seems to have had a lot of Media Coverage there.
And I am surely happy to hear, that Fukue did not get any bad Comments. I am always surprised that there is any Bullying in Japan, when they are known to be ultra-social. But then again - Bullying seems to be universal, and the Japanese People still are Human Beings, I suppose.
By the way, I can remember going to School not knowing the Language - that is hard, but it did not last long, at that age (7 Years old) You still are able to assimilate a Language rapidly. But I only had to learn English, not Japanese :)

I really hate to be “that person”, really I do… and I did leave a positive comment on the documentary page BUT damn Daniel, put your phone down or whatever you’re messing with. You are the only one who only looks at the camera when you are talking. Don’t ask a question to someone and then attend to something else as they answer you. It’s distracting to watch and rude to them. Bless your heart.

This is a boring video. Quite frankly, no one really cares about the film makers. We care about the subjects, ESPECIALLY Fukue. this is just narcissism on the part of the film-makers.
