    fantastic idea! Deer like to munch on my garden - this may not help completely but will definitely deter a little bit at least!

    Thank you for this great video! Here I have squirrels, so I'll put a top on it so the critters don't climb up and then down into the inside.

    I went outside this morning and was SO frustrated to see my planted sunflower seeds that had sprouted yesterday have now disappeared... they were munched down to the ground. I will be making some of these today in hopes of protecting my 2nd try at planting sunflower seeds in just 1 week. Thank you very much for this video... and for showing clearly how easy these plant protectors can be made. 😊

    Thanks for the idea. I can't help but wonder why there's 5 people who gave a thumbs down so far. People with issues I guess.

    I have trouble with hornworms in the tomatoes and squirrels in just about everything. I bought some "fruit protectors" online, which are finely woven plastic bags with ties. The mesh is so fine that nothing much can get through except air and water. I bought three sizes, and am using them on loquats (squirrel's favorite), oranges and peaches. The trick is to tie them securely like you would tie your shoe, in a bow, and tight, tight, tight. The squirrels are frustrated, and I am eating some loquats for the first time in many years. They can have the top of the tree and I'll take most of the bottom. But I am using them also in completely covering plastic pots, using wooden skewers I get at the dollar store to provide an inner bag structure so the wind doesn't flatten them. So far, so good. Be careful not to cover flowers that still need pollinating though. Wait until the fruit sets. They don't cost much, and can be used season after season.

    This is a good way to protect your tea roses and tree peony from desiccating winter winds.
    Make the cages a little bigger and fill with fallen tree leaves. Seal tightly.

      I bought fifty of those online, and they are several inches deep, so will secure wire, cloth, rope, or what have you. They are also quite cheap and made out of metal.

    Thank you! I live in Canada and have quail in the garden that like to destroy my sunflowers. This is something I’ll try as it’s hard to prevent them from tearing all the leaves off or ripping out the entire plant.

    Tip: why not cut 1foot strips since it’s already 2ft wide?

    Great video! Question….weave the bamboo stick through the wire? Can’t see what you did!

  • @happysnappess
    @happysnappess 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Hi, thanks for this. :) It's hard to see what you are doing with the bamboo stick.
    Are you weaving it in & out of the holes? It doesn't look like it, not sure how it works if one just plants the stick in the ground inside he cage... thanks.

    • @yellowbird5411
      @yellowbird5411 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think if you put two or three sticks around the inside, the wire won't blow up against the plant or tip over. I would probably use ground pegs, but that's just me. Raccoons can lift the wire up and get underneath. I have raccoons, and they make a mess. So do the possums, but not as much.

    I loved rabbits but since their eat all my plants I just wanna rid them I wouldn't wanna kill them but would rather do something to stop it I'm also trying chilly and garlic powder around the plant not over the root zone tho so can only be used in some ways not not every way

    Does this protect the plants from squirrels and chipmunks too or can they just climb over the top?

    • @ColorfulGardener
      @ColorfulGardener  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      The holes are large enough for squirrels and chipmunks to get through. Unless you get a different fencing material with smaller holes and piece of fabric to wrap around the top for smaller animals. The chicken wire is great against rabbits, dogs, and cats.

    I think I’ll make mine 2 feet tall cause I’m battling a fat groundhog over here and I don’t think a foot tall will be enough for him.

  • @ginafriend1690
    @ginafriend1690 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    This is the only way I see TH-camrs making these. I'm trying to find a simpler way, hoping this was. Rabbits can jump up to 2 feet, so your rabbits are different! I bought 3 feet chickenwire. I'm sure to cut my hands with on that note.
