    This song has Africa written all over it... the beat, the melody. It's very beautiful. I would love to see the creative process of how this song was conceived.

    • @neilpatrickhairless
      @neilpatrickhairless ปีที่แล้ว +7

      PG is absolutely inspired by African music and has been throughout his entire solo career as a musician. I know for a fact he would sit and listen to recordings of African drum lines and tribal music and literally pluck rhythmic concepts from the recordings. He even outright called it "stealing" the ideas and implied it was because a white guy from England could never actually come up with those concepts naturally because of the difference in cultures and influences. Peter often would translate these concepts to a Linn LM-1 drum machine first, then improvise parts on his Fairlight CMI synth, often using sounds he recorded and sampled with the Fairlight himself. Lots of body and nature sounds, lots of percussive elements, soundscape type stuff. Another musician who approached writing and production similarly is Kate Bush, who also was an early user of both the Fairlight CMI and Linn LM-1, and even featured on Peter's songs. Peter was sharing equipment back and forth with her at some point.

    • @neilpatrickhairless
      @neilpatrickhairless ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Peter was also very influenced by the usage of voice in African music - how the voice itself is an instrument used for emotional effect rather than just a means of communicating speech - he talked about how African music uses a lot of gutteral and primal vocal elements which to him came across as actual "blues" and "soul" music, a vast difference from those normally found on pop music. So, what you essentially have is a guy translating very primitive, very organic, very "analog" elements to what was at the time very technologically advanced, very synthetic and "digital" format and somehow making it work and make sense in that context. Again, Kate Bush was also known for being very good at doing a similar thing with her music. Very old traditional musical and emotional ideas being translated to newer formats and using both of those conditions to serve each other.

      Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think the OP meant the song musically is very reminiscent of Toto's Africa, which came out only a few years earlier. I also had to think of that song, listening to In Your Eyes.

      Rick Beato is the channel you need for this. That's how I found this song. He did a fascinating long interview with Daniel Lanois. You want this interview. This is the title of it... The Daniel Lanois Interview: Peter Gabriel, U2, Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson...
      I loved the moment Rick had this song play. You get to see Daniel's reaction to it. We need to be profusely thanking him for his work as a producer on this song. This is a gooood song!!! It's rather brand new to me. That interview was the moment I first heard it.
      Are ya saying this song is like Toto's Africa? Ha ha! I'mma gonna put them back to back now on a playlist. Thanks! Also, it has a world music vibe sooo, if you're saying it's got that continental Africa vibe, yeah. It's a texture-y layered song. Am I supposed to pay attention to the lyrics? I'm wrapped up in the instrumental portion. Some of this song has me randomly going all Lion King Hakuna Matata. This song....I can replay it for a long time on a loop. I gotta get this on an LP. Must have it.

    Most of us 80s kids took for granted that our music would continue to get better. The 90s Seattle Bands did something new that hadn't been done and I could appreciate the art but nothing will ever touch the soul that this era held as normal. A decent song comes every now and then lately but the 50s to 80s will probably never be beaten. Peter Gabriel was one of the best and I didn't even recognize that as a young man. Glad I do now and I try to give my poor children this insight. I wouldn't let them know this but it's sad how thier future has evolved.

    • @miketee2444
      @miketee2444 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That comment is so vague and general it kinda shows that you are just trying for a response, like children often do. What is sad for you that you don't realize how utterly stupid you have proven to be in front of thousands of people. Kids used to be taught a simple saying and it still holds true. If you don't have something nice to say then just shut your mouth.

    • @neilpatrickhairless
      @neilpatrickhairless ปีที่แล้ว

      the Seattle bands dumbed everything down to a point even a child could understand the musical ideas. It was more a regression than a progression. At least the 70's and 80's had people breaking out of comfort zones and societal and cultural "norms". Grunge and post-punk wasn't anything but a musical protest against progressive thought of any kind. Not saying one is better than the other, just fundamentally different and opposing ends of the spectrum

    In my opinion this is one of the greatest songs ever written. It is widely known that Peter Gabriel wrote it about actress Rosanna Arquette, his girlfriend at the time. Fun fact there is also a song by Toto called Rosanna that was also written by the lead singer when he was dating actress Rosanna Arquette when the lead singer was dating her. She is quite the Muse....

      Rosanna Arquette was dating Steve Porcaro, one of Toto's keyboard players - not one of Toto's 3 lead vocalists.
      Steve Porcaro also co-wrote Michael Jackson's "Human Nature"

I am one of those that are GLAD popular TV shows and movies and such are using music from this era and that its connecting with people who could be my kids age if I had kids. Music and art are cool like that - it bridges a lot of gaps

    My ex-husband, who was terrified of singing, once left a message on my answering machine of him singing this song because i'd broken up with him when i found out i was carrying his child. He stood by me and was a lovely man, and even though we had to part eventually, his beauty still smiles to me through this song and his love for Peter Gabriel--so much that our daughter's middle name became "Eden" after another Gabriel tune... i smile every time :)

I broke up w him just because I freaked out when I found out I was pregnant... but he sang this in a message on my machine a week later, i proposed to him at that point, and we had 7 happy years and two awesome kids together before going our separate ways because he came out😊 (We actually had a daughter and gave her the middle name Eden in reference to "The Blood of Eden.") He's an odd one, but we have remained close friends, maybe in part because we introduced each other to music like this...

    Days pass and this emptiness fills my heart
    When I want to run away
    I drive off in my car
    But whichever way I go

    Today is my Moms birthday. Just listening to some of her favorites and remembering the good old days. She's been gone gone for almost 5 years and I'm still a 53 year old LOST man! Nothing prepares you for the loss of all your favorite people so love them while you still have them!

      I hear this almost every day and it never gets old. aren't we all longing for the resolution to a thousand searches,constantly? isn't it time to let the light into our own eyes, to become sources of hope for others? Go ahead, take hold of eternal life--what have you got to lose?

    This song is one of the greatest love songs, if not THE greatest, ever created I swear. I’m only a teen right now and I hadn’t heard of this song until a few months ago and it has changed the way I see music and how versatile and emotional music can really be, along with how deep it can really cut with the right phrases and words. Whenever I listen to this song I get emotional just by the first verse with tears already in my eyes. It reminds of this person I want so badly to be with but I just keep messing up, but this song helps me get through whatever self firefight I face. This song, unlike most of what comes out today, captures the beauty of one emotion so perfectly and poetically it’s hard to not cry. I may be young and not know what love exactly is but I can imagine it’s exactly how I feel when I hear this song. The urgency to want someone but being scared to give your all to them, but at the same time running back to them and seeing the perfection that lies within their eyes, both of these accompanied with the emotion of feeling complete because of that one person. I dream to write and compose songs just as beautiful as this one, it’s insane how much one song can change the way you think and feel and want. This song is really the greatest piece of work I’ve ever heard, thank you Peter Gabriel.
