You're not wrong. For as much as we, as a society, have romanticized and mythologized Stan Lee as a beloved grandfatherly personality who's a revered pioneer and visionary in American pop culture, Stan had some character flaws of his own that were kept hidden from the public.
Within the comic book industry altogether, Stan was viewed by his contemporaries in the Marvel offices as a bit of a glory hog & shameless self-promoter. Whenever interviewers and various other pop culture commenters bestowed praise upon him, he never responded with enough of the requisite humility other comics professionals would've liked for him to, nor would he ever deflect the praise by saying it's all a team effort that would've never been possible without guys like Jack Kirby, Steve Ditko, John Romita, and other creatives at Marvel HQ contributing and pulling their weight also. Stan always felt compelled to be the largest personality in the room he was standing in, and this had a tendency to rub a lot of the other comics pros the wrong way. In other words, as harsh as this will sound (even though I don't mean for it to because I'm also a fanboy who adores Stan Lee), Stan could be something of a narcissist, unfortunately. Things always had to be about Stan, and him constantly courting other avenues such as the college speaking circuit & TV interviews in an attempt to increase his own star/celebrity status.
These aspects of his character are what drove him to be the pop culture giant he became. These are the types of people with the ambition & confidence to succeed in whatever it is they do. While these aspects of his personality are what made him & Marvel Comics so successful, it was also these same character flaws that repelled Jack Kirby & Todd McFarland into leaving him. There was a lot of bitterness and resentment that still remained with all these men, even towards the ends of their lives, unfortunately.
