plus stay away from BSc general/biology,zoology, anatomy & physiology, botany, geography etc. unless you want to be a scientist/researcher/teacher/professor. and your love for life sciences in high school is not sufficient enough to sustain you long term in these fields. rather do degrees such as nursing, physiotherapy, dentistry, optometry, medicine. or go to unis that specialise in different fields of science e.g uct/up offers genetics , molecular biology, applied statistics, genetic engineering etc. dont now study BSc (physiology & anatomy) because you loved the cardiovascular system in life sciences and expect to find a job afterwards. rather do medicine and later on specialise in cardiology you know what I mean?
only do BSc if youre a highly highly highly patient & curious person who's interested in research and science for the sake of it. not money driven but genuinely want to understand and add onto existing knowledge about how the world works.
if you gonna do Bsc do it in chemistry, physics, computer sc, maths, stats, actuarial science, biotech etc because you're more likely to get a job after undergrad or even honors. these are practical degrees. not theoretical like the ones mentioned above, those need further studies and in most cases, all roads lead to academia.
BSc on its own is no good. will take you nowhere. you will not work at a hospital when you've completed your degree 😂. a lot of students go into Bsc thinking it will land them a job at a hospital. you will be in a lab and you will do work on fish and rats and frogs etc. research entails working w animals for toxicological testing etc. if you want to study anything human based, please go to the Faculty of health sciences.
I hope this helps. even if it helps one person🙏🏿❤ God bless.

This may be an unpopular opinion but if you really don't know what you want or even a bit unsure. Take a gap year, research, reach out to people in those fields and look at job opportunities plss😭 man's is not lying at all. Uni is so expensive and this economy is tuff. Futhi you don't want to do something difficult for nothing.

I can relate so much to this.
I am currently enrolled at wits for computer science and to be honest,it was my third choice but ive always wanted to study Actuarial Science
So luckily i applied to other institutions and im accepted for next year, but what i wanna say is that doing a degree that does not excite you kills passion for other fields and thats what im experiencing now
But looking at it in another perspective,i feel that i got into this degree of comsci as God's way of preparing me for varsity so that when i do Actuarial Science next year,i would have perfected my study methods and know what to expect so that i can excel ❤

Did you know you are doing the right degree to be an actuarial scientist?
Level 1 - Your recommended electives at year one are maths and statistics as a comp major. You can take actuarial 1, economics, and bus accounting on top as electives if you want - even if you don’t do those its still fine.
Level 2 - continue electing with math and statistics. No commerce electives here or you can split them in level 1 and do some here.
Level 3 - continue electing with statistics. You don’t have to elect with math here (which I believe actuarial degrees lack in this level) but can take actuarial modules as electives only.
You will get your BSc in computer science degree which is stronger than the actuarial degree itself. Get a job and while you working write your board exams. After finishing your board exams register honours full time but do it part time. Make sure you have someone in honours class that can help you with logistics of all courses. You can pay to thank them.
To be an actuarial scientist you don’t need an actuarial degree. You don’t even need a degree or a matric. You need to write board exams. But majority of companies prefer quantitative degrees to work as an actuarial. So do a very strong quantitative degree and board exams to be a very strong actuarial. I recommend majors in applied mathematics and statistics with electives in computer science and pure mathematics.
It might be hard to find a grad program with majors in applied mathematics and statistics. Further your studies in the field of applied mathematics. Apply for NRF/CoE Mass funding and do honours; finish in one year. Continue with masters ; also apply same funding. In masters degree you have lot of flexibility. You can work as an assistant lecturer/tutor many courses. You can earn money and combine it with your funding. Use that money to do your board exams while doing your masters. Make sure you finish your masters in one year.
After your masters degree go work. Register PhD part time and continue working. No actuarial degree graduate will reach you on this level.

Gift Mfowethu i want to say what you are sharing here is exactly the path i had undergone last year, i was doing a different course but i switched to my current one this year. Meaning I'm still a level 1 student instead of doing a course i was not happy with. I'm glad i made the decision and I'm ready to face any challenges to get where i want to be in future.
    You are a true inspiration❤

That's true i've just finished matric and i've decided to take a gap year not because i want to be cool or whatsoever. It's because I want to give myself some time to think which career i want in life. It may look like i wasted 1 year of my life rather wasting 3 years of your life with something that won't even make you happy in life in addition to school fees money wasted off

Nice sharing. Dreams do die. What is good is that new ones can be born. I like that you noted the importance of reflecting during the process ... Redirection happens. Proper research and planning can work for some disciplines but not others, merely due to the fact that some sectors are fast changing, while others remain quite predictable.

Thank you for sharing Gift❤. I've been in two universities already; I dropped out at the first university because I was pursuing a dream degree but at a later stage found out I was not academically fit to continue. At the second university I was pursuing a degree in relation to my academic strength, which is mathematics but dropped out due to financial constraints. So what you're saying is very true, I had to do full research before enrolling, which is true self introspection and if I had enough funds to continue. I've learnt my lesson though, I'll be going back to university to pursue a mathematics related degree making sure not to waste any more funds. Thank you sm again Gift, you're an inspiration❤
