    Peter Erskine describes one of the most important lessons he had was from Joe Zawinul. Joe Zawinul told Peter Erskine to compose when he played a drum solo. He clearly does that in this solo and any other solo he played which I've heard. He never relies on rudiments and remains supremely musical and emotionaly expressive.

    I absolutely love all of the space he used, it’s magnificent abs adds drama and suspense without being overbearing on the music.
    His musicality is beautiful as well, you can hear the music and rhythm 🥁 in all his fills.
    One of my all time favorite drummers ❤️

    He could throw something in there, that would be impossible to describe in music notation and make it sound intentional and emotional, but always with simplicity in mind, without resorting to overly complex odd figures. Few others on any instrument have reached the same level of control and expressiveness. I am glad to have lived in the same century as this wonderful musician.

    Peter the Great! Not every drum solo has to be chock full of notes. This solo is played tastefully and with great feel!

    Freaking inspiring....you can tell the way he spaces out his fills that he can listen to himself playing.

    Sits so low . Saw some footage of Vinnie with Frank Zappa and he used to sit impossibly low also , ditto for early Weckl in the elektric band ...

    You guys enamored with the stuff past the 3:00 mark are missing the point. The stuff at the end is Erskine's bag of "crowd pleaser" tricks. The real meat is in the rest of the solo.
    Peter Erskine's sense of time-flow and subdivision is just phenomenal. This is one of the most subtle, sophisticated solos I've seen in a while- not because of his 'chops'; because Peter is making 100% use of space, subdivision and front/mid/back beat placement.

    I knew that would get a rise... : ) Just doing some drummer ball breakin' Of course Erskine is the sound of WR. Chester Thomson ain't no slouch though as witnessed by some of the bands he has performed with over the years.

    Very hard to find a drum soloist that does not depend on rudiments to express himself...

    • @callumomeagher1868
      @callumomeagher1868 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      but literally anything you play on drums is a rudiment lol... You can hit a drum once and it'd be a single stroke roll. It's about how you turn those rudiments into melody's and phrases that makes a great drum solo which Peter demonstrates so perfectly

    • @fardrum
      @fardrum 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I don't understand the meaning of your comment, it is equivalent to saying "very hard to find a guitar soloist that doesn't depend on 7 notes to express himself"

    • @wolowolowolo
      @wolowolowolo 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      @@fardrum when I mean not using rudiments, I mean the technical avalanche of doubles, fast singles, paradiddles and flams, etc... obviously using single strokes is using a rudiment, somehow, but no one says that an Iron Butterfly drum solo is full of rudiments.
      ..I don't know if I explain myself...

  • @godbluffvdgg
    @godbluffvdgg 12 ปีที่แล้ว

    Well my friend, you can't be a drummer, because you didn't agree with my statement. : )... We really can't argue opinion so I will acquiesce and state for the record that both drummers are at the pinnacle of their professions and each brings an admirable technique to their instruments. I assumed mentioning him in the same class as Gadd was homage enough. For my money Carl Palmer is the best living drummer, along with Simon Phillips, Copeland et al. Dead drummers;Don't get me started : ) Peace

    : ) If you're a drummer, you'll agree with me... If you love WR on the other hand you may be a bit preferential. That being said; Gadd would triple ratamacue flamacue his ass. : ) Erskine is a great drummer, though...
