I have no idea if this will be seen or not, but I don’t think words can express how much I appreciate this video. I’m a broke engineering student who’s been using my laptop since it was purchased in 2019. When the hinge blew out a few weeks ago, I panicked. I’m barely able to pay my rent, and even though I just started a new job it’ll be a while before I have anything saved up. I absolutely can’t afford to replace my laptop, even with an old or secondhand one. I’ve had it sitting in the same place for days, afraid to touch it lest it fall apart completely and be completely destroyed. I have little experience working with computers, and while I can usually figure things out with enough time to investigate this was too high-stakes to risk messing up. Your video walked me through everything perfectly, and somehow despite my inexperience my laptop is now repaired in full working order (camera included!!!) and I can breathe easy again. Truly, and from the bottom of my heart: thank you.

Thanks so much for posting this! It was exactly what I needed to fix my daughter's computer after the hinge blew out.

Do you absolutely need a heating pad to do this? Would a blow-dryer work?

This can be done easily without removing the back of the laptop

As in the bottom of the laptop?
With failed hinge mounts, you kinda do need to remove the bottom of the laptop to get to them

right, but if you are replacing the lid the general reason for this is the hinge mounts on the lid end are broken, not the base end. of course if you want to install new hinges the back needs to be removed. i have done a few of these. 1) remove the bezel, lcd panel 2) unscrew the hinges from the lid 3) remove the webcam/wifi antennas/magnets from the lid. then fit again in the new lid (i usually loosen the hinges slightly so they put less stress on the new screws, but not so loose they cant hold the screen up properly). then just put it back together in reverse. takes about 20 mins all in. Dell have revised the lids slightly so each side has 5 mounting points instead of the usual 2, so an extra set of screws is very beneficial.
