Should've named themselves Paid By The Machine. I understand their first album being on a major label and getting to a bigger audience. After that they've could've went to an Indie label and made the same if not even more money and helped out a smaller company and other struggling bands. If Tom is so $15 minimum wage then he should do something about their ticket prices too. Cap them at $15. I saw Fugazi for $5 back in 1998 and RATM for $40. It's easy to scream about spreading the wealth when it doesn't affect your own pockets. I never understood these Millionaire Socialists. Only in a Capitalist country could Millionaire Socialists even exist.

The only bone of contention that anyone seems to have with anyone not named Tom Morello in Rage is the fact that they are signed to a major label. There have been rumors about "tensions," in the band from virtually its inception, and I believe that has been code for Zack and Tom don't see eye to eye. If Tom hadn't met Zack, he would have an entirely different artistic identity. He grew up worshipping 80s hair bands. He and De La Rocha could not be more diametrically opposed when it comes to their influences. In fact, Zack would probably make the collective Rock subculture gasp, when he decreed that "he doesn't really care for Black Sabbath."
As for Tim and Brad, I think they just wanted to be in a Successful band. It gets a little more complicated when you want to do this for a living. If you want to play for massive audiences, and make the highest quality albums possible. I think Zack just threw up his hands when dealing with Tom and that's why he eventually left the band. Tom wanted Rage to become even more of a juggernaut. If you listen to Zack's solo stuff, you'd realize this guy doesn't have a mainstream bone in his body.

Maynard James Keenan nearly became the vocalist of RATM. Imagine if that happened. Tom and Tim had a long talk on the phone eventually deciding to go with Zach as it made more sense for where the band was trying to go to.
It would've meant no Tool and a different path for RATM.

Fugazi stands as the ONLY band that really dared to Rage Against the Machine, and did right to the mutual ending to the band. Had their own label, $5 all ages shows, set prices for their releases, still to this day. Apples and oranges.
Fugazi's goal as a band was simply to write genuine music they liked. RATM's goal as a band was to sound the alarm about social, political and economic injustice. As noble as Fugazi's cause may be, minimal marketing and DIY doesn't reach the maximum amount of listeners.

i play guitar. as a consequence i was curious about his signature pedal.
when it was announced on social media, almost none of the comments had anything to do with the pedal... like these comments, there were all about his politics. even then the comments were generally the sort where you could tell the person was angry but didn't really understand what they were talking about. They would toss out terms like communist and socialist, but clearly did not know what they meant, or how they were different things.
Music like all art, is subjective. And thats what the RATM/Morello thing is to me. A lesson on how passionately people get about things they clearly don't put any effort into understanding at any reasonable level to be so passionate and opinionated about.

Fugazi didn't give interviews to media outlets that advertise alcohol and cigarettes; you don't even need to do that, so your reach can be wider. RATM was always corporate rock. I think RATM perfectly embodies "if you stare into the abyss too long, the abyss stares back at you." I agree with exactly 0% of their politics, but I believe they truly did believe in their message in the beginning and I respect them for doing everything it took to get that message across to fans, even if that meant crawling into bed with the Devil. But it just took its toll on them and they started to believe their shit didn't stink. They became like Stan in that anti-bullying episode of South Park. All that's left is to end up jackin it in San Diego...

And if you look at their three albums, they never lost their message like other bands have on their rise to fame. Even the cover album still stays true to the idea of raising issues that others don’t want to know about.
