    Omg how did you get this interview?! She’s literally an icon in Japan and was the pioneer for mixed race acts period. I love how down to earth she continues to be considering what she did for the Japanese music industry at such a young age. We love you Crystal. Her new single called Love Yourself is a whole bop too!!!

    • @TheAerialgreen
      @TheAerialgreen 2 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      That's not true. She's well known, and I really like her, but she's not an icon nor a pioneer for biracial performers in Japan. There have been plenty of biracial performers in the entertainment industry, even way back in the Showa era.

      @OderaIgbokwe วันที่ผ่านมา +10

      @@TheAerialgreen You say not an icon or a pioneer, as though there can only be one in music history? It's a strange and negative take to have. When it comes to 2000s j-pop and r&b, and Black people singing in Japan Crystal is absolutely an icon and one of the most well known impactful artists.

    Crystal is so right about Japan being self-sufficient and not as hungry for global success, which is valid, but at the same time Japan / J-pop has so many talented artists and art forms that I believe deserve worldwide recognition!! I recently got into Psychic Fever from Exile Tribe because they went viral on TikTok. They also have a half Nigerian member and half moroccan/korean member who definitely would be popular in the west.

      I thought for a long time that Japan has so many top-tier artists as good as Korea that the rest of the world should know about but yea I've also heard that Japan makes already a lot of profit from their own people so they don't necessarily need to go global I also think there is also more diversity in Japanese mainstream in both music genres and more people of other races without changing their natural looks

    Like Crystal. I grew up as a military dependent and attended Yamato/Yokota High Schools in the 70s. What was wonderful was the large number of bi-racial kids, dads who were US Military, along with Japanese kids who were getting an American style education. It was a melting pot of all kinds of nationalities. I grew up listening to JPOP along with American music. Even in the 70s there was a hafu(half) girl group called Golden Half with Japanese girls who were bi-racial. I got into Crystal in early 2000s and have loved all of her music. Thanks for this interview. She amazingly looks like she did over 20 years ago!

    Crystal Kay was so important to me as a blasian kid I was lucky to find her album over 20 years ago thrifting in Amsterdam back then nobody was really into Japanese or Korean stuff (I used to blind buy Cd albums stuff from yesasia back then haha) I was really lucky finding her album so randomly artists like her and Yoon Mirea/Tasha made me so happy as I saw other blasian people in a pop culture I was into and there weren’t that many other blasians doing their thing. When it comes to representation of
    diversity this is such a better time for a lot of people and I hope it will get even better in the future!

    i was like "hmmmm?" when she said kpop opens up the gate for asian musicians abroad because i feel like she's only looking at the American market perhaps. but in asia, we've been listening to Japanese music and watching japanese drama, even before korean entertainment was a thing! the problem was, as she also said, the Japanese companies only care about Japanese market. if M-flo (and i know her from the M-Flo loves days), tokyo jihen performed in my country i would definitely go to watch them! I'm not into jpop idols, but i know a lot of people would watch them too. the market is even bigger i think for jpop or Japanese bands. like my friends have been going to japan and other countries a lot just to watch Diru.
