5 days travelling through Panama (the road ends) (EP 65)

Last week we concluded a month on travel in Costa Rica. And just as we arrived at the border with Panama, the rainy season arrived with us. We do not have much time in Panama but we were dedicated to make the most of it. Unfortunately the heavy rains decided otherwise. Change on plans are not always a bad things, and it is life right? So we went with the flow and spent more time meeting people and eating local food than hiking. Eventually the rain stopped and we could enjoy our last days travelling in the country under the sun. We even got to meet old travel friends and discover the Panama Canal the best way possible.
We were due to arrive to Panama City on a set date for an important appointment. We explain you why in this video. A lot is about to change in the following weeks!

I didnt realize you spent a whole month in costa rica. Im with you on the heat and humidity. Id rather stay in the mountains where it is a little fresher. My husband told me the border at panama and costa rica is busy because people from costa rica go to the border to buy things because it is cheaper. That walkway on the ridge and the view was cool. Also good choice of music for the hike.

Hahaha actually the first episodes until maybe Alaska nick was always piloting. Only after mathilde took over. And now it s a bit of a mix.

Yes he is Panamanian but worked many years in the USA as a doctor before settling back in his childhood village! A nice encounter for sure ! Speaking Spanish really opens a lot of opportunities for us it is really underrated hahaha

What do the immigration officers in these countries usually ask before they let you guys in to their country (papers, etc?) would love to experience what you guys are doing right now, travel in a car from country to country. You guys are just inspiring!
Thank you! Honestly we never have complicated questions. Usually just where are you from and where are you going. The papers are almost always the same and very simple in the Americas: passport, and car registration nothing else
I appreciate your sharing of your travels (!) but I really wonder: Do you ever feel that you want to spend more time in the countries that you travel through so fast?
Hi JA, thanks for your question. We see sometime people saying we go too fast but we are not sure it is a fair assessment compared to most travellers. Some country we spend more time (USA 3 months, Canada 3 months, Mexico 3 months, Costa RIca 1 months) some we spend less time (often smaller countries: 1 week in el salvador, honduras, nicaragua and panama). Those are conscious choices that do not reduce how much we enjoy the trip but are made based on the diversity of landscapes and activities for us to enjoy. Most people actually dont spend more than a week in those countries when travelling there. we get to see them all so we consider ourselves lucky. We would not have the budget to take the luxury to spend a month in each country nor we would want to be 15 years on the road. What is true is that we move everyday contrarily to some people who can spend a week on the same beach. But that is how we are we love moving all the time and it allows us to meet more people and see more places. And if we feel we lack time for any reason: we have always the option to go back at some point in our life!

Yes we purchase insurance in each country. In most you just purchase it at the border as you enter, for some you can purchase them in advance. For instance in the Central American countries of the C4 we found one insurance that worked everywhere

Did you find any difficulty in Mexico or Central American so far finding DIesel at gas stations as opposed to regular gas?
Never, it was very rare to not find diesel at a station. But we also have a large tank so we did not need to be looking for it all the time

I have 2 questions. Has your mapping system ever failed you? You seem so confident heading down unknown roads in strange countries.
Have you ever had a stress moment where the other helps you to remain calm?
Hi Ursula! so far no major problem for mapping. they did become less and less reliable so we are a bit more careful and tend to double check the itineraries. In cities they are really bad sometimes but no major trouble so far.
We constanstly balance each other in stressful moments. It is rare that both of us stress at the same time, in some way we always have one calming or rationalizing the other ahah at least so far.
I'm glad to hear that. Stress can creep up on you at the end of a long day, even when one is trying so hard to be cool. Yes, the mapping just amazes me. I'm glad you have it. And that it is mostly reliable😎🌝

Pour le moment jamais jamais. Ils ne voient pas la camera de devant j'ai l'impression... c'est super discret. bon on ne sait pas mais sur toute l'Amérique centrale pour le moment pas de soucis
The United States built the Panama Canal and owned it for 75 years. They then allowed Panama to take control of the Panama Canal in 1999.
Gringoland stole the land, and gave it back to Panama a long time later
America is only one continent and you can divide it into 3 regions, north america from Mexico to Canada, Central America from Guatemala to Panama and South America from Colombia to the tip of Argentina. it is only one continent for all the English speaking countries in the continent, Gringoland divides it in 2 separate continents, and also stole the name for themselves-
