Hi Tom I discovered carving in January this year so very new to carving. My first bird was a loon and I wish I had seen your videos back then, it would have been very helpful. Very excited to learn from your videos and can't wait to watch them all and put into practice your methods. Thank you for sharing your many years of knowledge for us beginners.
I use a .TX Foredom for the heavy work and a Gessewin Marathon Micromotor for the fine details. You can get bits from the Jaymes Company. They have a web site and there are others you can get these bits from. I put a short video together covering those and the equipment I use. Just search to videos on my channel for “tools and equipment”. Hope that helps.
Yes I have SO. A long time ago I did a GWT hen decorative but I just don't have the patience to do an entire decorative bird. Having too much fun doing what I do!
Tom, when you started out, did you ever go through two or three heads when you were making a decoy to try to get one that looks good? I am thinking about doing that as I usually am not happy with the heads/bills that I am turning out. Bruce Brandeberry
Yep. That’s why I normally carve the head first. It’s where the life is conveyed and if I like the way the head turns out it motivates me to want to finish the bird.
I was just sitting at my kitchen table drawing and thought about mallard ducks 🦆 made from wood 🪵 I clicked on videos, and welp found yours clicked on it. What kind of wood do you use?
Thanks Tom its a pleasure being able to follow along as you create your carvings. I have learned so much!!
You are very welcome and thanks for the feedback!

Wonderful! That’s very encouraging and I’m so glad these are helpful. I hope you enjoy carving as much as I do. Thanks for the note!
That's some beautiful work in the making. Thanks for the videos! It's a pleasure watching a master carver. Thank you !
Thank you very much!
Another great video TC, all shaped up nicely. I think I am ready to see the finished product. Thank you. 🙏🏻
You and me both! Will post some pictures of the finished bird when I get him done. Thanks!
Amazing skill
Thank you!
Really enjoy your videos. What kind of Dremel type tool are you using? Where do you order your bits from? Thanks!

That's going to be a really nice bird Tom. Just curious..have you ever challenged yourself with a full decorative?
I may have worded this wrong. Maybe it isn't a challenge for you. Anyway...have you ever done one?

I use Tupelo but many carvers use basswood, cedar and pine as well.
