Thanks Paul. I'm I just into my third month of drawing having been inspired by our overseas trip in October. We visited the likes of Van Gogh museum., Rembrandt's House, Monet's garden and home, Da Vinci's home in Amboise, France and the Picasso museum in Barcelona. This had a massive impact on me and inspired me to take up drawing. I'm now reading Van Gogh"s Masterworks by Rosalind Ormiston. Regards ✍️👌 .
Thank you for sharing these interesting facts with us. Im deeply touched by Vincent and his tragic story. He must have had a beautiful yet very lonely soul.
Another wonderful overview. I am a painter and greatly appreciate your efforts to education people, particularly the young who see little outside their cellphone screen.
Sir I really admire the time you take to reply to each comment.I have not seen anybody else doing that. You definitely have a subcriber for life.Take care.
Fantastic video! I've been looking for kid friendly artist history videos for my children. My child school is sadly lacking in that area; they only do art on iPads! We've also been using your learn how to draw series. Thanks for everything!!
Really pleased you liked the video, you might be interested in the film I have made of Van Gogh which is designed for school children. It can be downloaded from artistinschool.com/van-gogh Regards Paul
one of the people who influenced my life in a tremendous and horrible way at once. I was an avid "Van Gogh addict" since I was 12 years old, many paintings and even some music of mine are heavily influenced by him. When I was about 15 Years old in a Bipolar manic episode i was in a state of psychosis where I believed I WAS Van Gogh, I cut into my foot and mixed my blood with the Oil paint. I love him, he means so much to me.
Greg, thanks for subscribing. I have deleted your other comments, you might think them 'goofy' most people find them plain insulting. If you want to be treated with respect on this channel you don't keep firing off crude, infantile comments. Simple really!
Cool! I've never heard Van Gogh's name pronounced correctly, which I'm assuming you do:) Of course, I'm an American from the South:) HA! Appalachian Mountains of western North Carolina and have only heard "Gogh" pronounced as "go"
I don’t believe he was as mentally unstable as you say. He drank absinthe, a popular cheap drink made of wormwood. That could have affected him . Why not stress that he had been a minister of the gospel before any other job. And was kicked out of the church because he was covered in dirt ministering to injured coal miners. His suicide is also in question. It would be just like him to cover up for some kid who shot him in the belly.
+The trumpet will sound I suggest you do a little more research. Both Vincent and his brother suffered from syphilis, more than likely caught by his numerous visits to prostitutes. A common result of this infection is mental illness amongst a number of other disabilities. He had a number of 'episodes' or breakdowns which eventually led to him spending over a year in the asylum. He was kicked out of the church because he had a habit of giving his clothes to the poor, a practice the church frowned on- he wasn't setting the right standards! Van Gogh was never ordained as a minister in the church, he was to obsessive for that. As you mention he was much more interested in helping the Belgian miners that following the rigidity of church doctrine. Van Gogh did die of a gun shot wound to the stomach, it is generally accepted he shot himself, but over the years theories about teenagers committing the act and even an obscure Dutch painter who was living in the next room at his lodgings in Auver sure Oise, but there is no evidence for this. Interestingly, Van Gogh's room at the Raboux Inn, which I have visited, is known as the suicides room and has never been rented out since 29th July 1890, the day of van Gogh 's death. We shall never know the truth, but probability points to suicide.
With respect, in relation to fact number one, Vincent had three brothers, the first Vincent, Theo and Cornelius 1867-1900. Ps. By the way Vincent also had three sisters, Anna, Elizabeth and Willemina.
@@ArtHistorySchool For the sake of argument there certainly is a difference between a suicide and the victim of a shooting. I choose to believe the latter.
Vincent fled France to England to avoid fighting in the Franco Prussian war...he was a teaching assistant at the down in heel school...he should have stayed here...
+MC C It was Claude Monet who fled Paris to avoid fighting in the Franco Prussian war not Van Gogh. The Franco Prussian war ended in 1871, Van Gogh came to England for the first time in May 1873 when he was transferred from Goupils Paris to their London office in Southampton Street. He also worked as a teaching assistant as you say, but that was in Ramsgate in Kent in 1876.

Van Gogh notoriously despised photography and only two authenticated photographic images exist taken when he was 13 and 19. No mention of photography is found in his letters in which he details the creation of virtually every painting he created. There is one painting that looks similar to a photograph recently discovered, that some claim to be of Van Gogh.
HARD TO BELIEVE!! The two photographs of Vincent at 13. & 19 years old are actually photos of brother Theo!! Yes!! They must have been mis-identified many years ago. A few forensic scientists made this fact known. Imagine, all the books showing the two photos at 13 & 19 are wrong. If a thousand old beliefs were ruined in our march to truth we must still march on. ~Stopford Brooke
A letter to me from Pascal Bonafoux, 2004, says. it is without a doubt, Vincent! Pascal wrote five books about including "The Passionate Eye' Van Gogh's self-portraits." Check Pascal Bonafoux 'Librarything.com
I'll never accept the vulgar opinion this man suicided. It is not evidence to say his (gossiping) peasant neighbors called his apartment "the suicide room." No weapon was found; no note written. I've read nothing about VvG ever owning a pistol, and he was a prolific writer, he surely would have felt compelled to pen a farewell. His assumed suicide is romantic art mythology. Having elevated this humble artist to grandure, don't we at least owe him the benefit of the doubt?
You are entitled to your opinion. I have been to the Ravoux Inn in Auver sur Oise, which is now a museum, and there is written documentary evidence that the room in which Van Gogh died, had not been rented out since 29th July 1890 and that it was then referred to as 'the suicides room'. The people who knew Van Gogh and lived with him and owned the Inn in 1890 used the same term. I suggest if you come to Europe, visit the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, the world authority on Van Gogh as I have done. It holds the bequest of letters, paintings, drawings of Van Gogh collected by Theo's wife, look at the research that the museum holds, including his medical records and see if you still hold the same opinion.
The problem is all hyper realistic painting/drawing looks the same, technically very good, but lacks individuality, passion and creativity. It is more of a technical exercise than an artist expression. Like him or not, Van Gogh's work is individual, creative, full of passion, life and angst and easily recognisable, not something you can say about hyper realism.
I could have told you, Vincent this world was never meant for one as beautiful as you ❤
Yes, Don McLean's song 'Vincent' sums him up perfectly. Paul

He actually had another brother, who was younger, named Cor.
You are right, he also had three sisters. He also had an elder brother called Vincent who died before he was born and who he was named after. Paul
Correct, wasn't Cor thought to have committed suicide? Although listed as being killed in action

Great job! Although, as far as I know Vincent was admitted to the Asylum in Saint-Rémy in May 1889.
You are right, a slip of the tongue, it was 1889 not 1888

Hasn't his death by suicide been questioned and he likely was shot by a young man who was among a group who teased and tormented him?
There are a number of theories, the one I mentioned is the generally accepted view, but who knows? Cheers Paul

I like the way you can reply to everyone's comment you are really fair!!☺️
But your obviously not gonna reply to me :(
Why would I not reply to you, mind you, you haven't said much to comment on.
I didn't know "Fact #9", that his room was left the same. I guess you mean that except for what Gachet and his Son stole.
You know that as a fact?
You sound so definitive- yet there are too many inaccuracies and omissions for my taste. Better research next time, please!
Can you list the inaccuracies? As regards omissions not surprising really when I'm only mention 10 facts about his life.
half of these arent even facts its theories...

H-He COMMENTED ON YOUR COMMENTS!!
He only sold one painting in his life? Well, he certainly traded for many works, so selling is not everything!
There's only one documented sale, but as you say he probably traded pictures for food. Luckily, he had a brother to support him financially.
Didn't they find out that Van Gogh had epilepsy?
Not sure about the epilepsy but it seems he was almost certainly bi-polar
