Huge thanks to Jani for sending these treats (well, most of them!!). Have you tried any of these snacks before? Which one would you want to taste? Let me know your thoughts! Also, if you enjoyed this, check out more of my taste test videos here: th-cam.com/play/PLfItiEY3o1ms_LsGHRM2shtBdgffPTx0R.html
You're welcome! :) It was fun compiling the package!
@@aefinn Good choises! Only one I "disagree" with is the chocolate orange, which I consider something worthy of the court at Hague. But, to each, our own. I know lots of people like it (Barry, for one, obviously), but it (literally) makes me hurl. If someone hands me a bag of mixxed candy, I first have to ask "are there, or hanve there been, chocolate orange in this bag?", because even just the merest sniff of it makes me nauseated.
Oh, and Jani, do you know why you suddenly more or less banned kinuski? It used to be in EVERYTHING, and now there's only a handful of products.
@@MichaelStaghorn haven't noticed any changes in amounts of kinuski in stuff. That said I think it's origins are in Russia so maybe that might be the reason...
@ Yup, it is Russian in origin. But the change I'm talking of was ~20 years ago, so it's not related to current events, at least.
Xylitol balances your mouth pH, that is why it is recommended after eating something, especially something sugary as the bacteria that grow in your mouth will excrete acid from their butts... There is additional benefic, Xylitol is sugar alcohol, the bacteria (or you) can not use it for nutrients. But it fits in the same place that glucose is suppose to go in those bacteria and just sort of hangs around there blocking it. This starves the bacteria and it can not reproduce. So it also lowers the amount of bacteria.
Excellent on long road trips, out of town work, long workdays... any time you can't brush your teeth and should. It can delay that, it isn't any kind of replacement but it helps things. It also tastes "cool" without any peppermint or menthol, it has similar effect on its own but it goes away fast. Gum is better than xylitol candy, as you chew you produce saliva and that combo is very effective.
Just remember, Xylitol, like most non-dietary sweeteners are laxative. You do need to eat a handful but, it has that effect. So, never eat a lot of xylitol. Also: TOXIC TO DOGS!! Very important little detail. They too have to chew fair bit but, you know they will chomp a bag full of candy in seconds.
The 'salt' in those liquorice things is Salammoniac (or Salmiac), aka Ammonium Chloride, which was once used as the electrolyte in old batteries called Leclanché cells, and was used theatrically to make smoke effects when heated, and can clean soldering iron tips too, other people just eat it apparently... :P
Blimey! Good info!
Ah, that's what the smoke coming out from Barry's ears was!
Ah, misses this before I wrote my comment. Knew some, but not all of this. Thanks!
Also a common ingredient in older cough syrups, which is why according to many it tastes bitterly medicinal.
@@loofy530 Salty Liquorice is still a good thing to chew on when you have a cough.
Offers some help to remove the gunk from your lungs.
I have been waiting for this video to popup and I'm so glad it's here now! One thing about the Fazer chocolates: they are made with fresh milk and not powder :) Thanks for making this video and sorry for the salmiakki! :D
Also, I don't work for Fazer but they are definitely dominating our candy market (among-side with Panda) :D
So cool, yes it was deffo milky!
@@aefinn And cookies too. Every time I'm back on 🇦🇽, I stock up on all the goodies. Doris are the best!
I miss these videos. It's been a while since you made one of this style. Good to see it back.
What sort of style do you mean? Thanks mate
@mrbarrylewis taste test style was what I meant. Sorry should have been more clear.
Yes, I loved watching all the tasting of foods from other countries in past videos, so was also happy to see this pop up. 😊
Well im finnish and when i saw the notification for finnish treats taste test it was instant click:)
Awesome, it was fun, I am jealous of your chocolates!
I came here to write this 😂
Very happy to see these videos back Barry! Keep up the good work . Liquorice is good but salty is VILE❤❤❤❤
cheers
The Tyrkisk Peber made my mouth start watering. They are so good.
Some of my friends at tennis loved it! .... edit..... (some)
Agree! I shove them in by the handful.
I was in Scandinavia last summer, and I LOADED up on those Salmiakki chocolate bars. I bought one and tried it, then immediately went back and bought three more. I love them. Then again, I love salted licorice.
Did you try the ice cream one with similar packaging?
@@jattikuukunen That's one of my fav's. My post-grocery shopping treat.
If only Barry knew that Jenkki does indeed do licorice and salmiakki flavored chewing gum. As a finn myself, that raspberry yogurt chocolate and the milk/white chocolate ones are some of my all time favorites.
You do white chocolate so much better than anybody else. Generally not a fan, but when it's Fazer, I'll gladly have a bbite.
“It’s almost like someone’s gone to Liquorice and made it angrier” 😂 hahaha
Be careful, xylotol is toxic to dogs so super make sure Boston stays away. Great video 😊 I too hate licorice so I felt your pain watching 😅
Oh man, it's been a while since I've seen you do a snack taste tests, it was one of my favorite series from you. 😅
haha yeah, happy to do some more I think, the playlist has loads on there! Think Hawaii was a good one!
@@mrbarrylewis Oooh, if you are planning to do more, I suggest trying those online snack boxes, Barry.
I think I remember one called *"Try Treats"* or something like that(?). Basically, it's a subscription thing where you get a snack box from certain countries, at least, from the videos I've seen. 😅
Salty liquorice is amazing!
Some of my chums from tennis enjoyed it, but they like liquorice more than me
Must be like marmite, you either love it or hate it...
This is like a culmination of all my years of being your fan Barry. Great job on the reviews, and well done soldiering through all that salmiac. The raspberry yoghurt one is one of my favourites and just the mention of it made my mouth water a bit.
As a Finn, it's amazing how sensitive you are to liquorice. A Pepe or filled liquorice stick is not at all spicy (the Turkish peppers or the "salmiakki" type stuff can be). They're just soft, quite savoury (they don't taste salty, nor very sweet) sweets. Yet somehow it causes this super strong reaction.
Ah yes I just don't like liqourice at all - strong or not really, the salted thing was deffo a notch higher!
@@mrbarrylewis Next time someone need to send an Liqourice Beginners Package from Finland. With Moomin liqourice meant for small kids.
In the Netherlands we like it too
Yep, I’m the same as Barry..From black jelly beans, to anise cookies, to any fancy licorice treats..
If it’s not the cherry/strawberry variety, licorice is one of my least favorite flavors
i hate liquorice as well.
I was really hoping there'd be a supercut of all your taste reactions at the end! :)
Great vid as always
I love liquorice even i am not from Nordic country (i am from Serbia) when i was been young around age of 16 i was visiting relatives in Switzerland and i tried liquorice rolled candy and i fell in love , in 2019 i was finally find some Nordic candy store in main street in Belgrade (Knez Mihajlova) and i bought salmiaki candies i give to some of my friends but they spit out but i enjoy in this taste. Btw i read somewhere that some guy eat entire big bag of salmiaki and he was go in hospital and die because liquorice have some compound which is toxic if you eat too much. From Wikipedia : Continuous intake of large amounts of liquorice is a widely known cause of pseudo-hyperaldosteronism leading to hypertension and hypokalemia. These manifestations are usually mild, although in some cases may generate life-threatening complications, i.e., arrhythmias, muscle paralysis, rhabdomyolysis, and coma.
Yes, liquorice reduces kalium and increases blood pressure, so there can be symptoms depending on dosage. Some people should avoid them entirely, while others are fine with eating quite a bit.
yeah, eating like kilo of ammonium chloride is not a way to go really XD
I love when you do these kind of videos brilliant 🤩 Thanks for sharing Barry 🤪👍🍫🍬🍭
thanks
Loving the cut away cam!!!
As an American, I loved black licorice since I was a kid. Me and my Mom are the only ones in our family of 8 that like it. Best brand is Panda which is sold just about everywhere in the US. I had no idea it was a Finnish brand. Thank you Finland ❤😊
tyrkisk peper is very popular in Sweden and my favorite sweets! I demolish a bag in under 30 minutes and my mouth bleeds for a week afterwards. Salmiak and chocolate are two of the best things in the world 😍
Minutes? Weakling! ;-P
@ well it’s hard to finish a bag of 150 g in seconds 😅😅
@ Much to learn, you have, young Padawan.
A shiver, an actual shiver went down my spine when you crunched into the liquorice ball 😆 thanks for that 😅
Love your videos barry! And the new kitchen looks great too!
It's been a while since you made one of these Treat videos, great to see a return! :)
... hearing salmiakki being called "angry licorice" is a new one. I can't argue though
Thank you for sharing these treats with us!
Hallo Barry! Love the new kitchen studio!!! ☺️
cheers
If you ever decide to travel to Finland with Mrs. B, we'll be more than happy to show you some cool places around. Something like Rovaniemi and The Santa's Village is deffo something you should experience. Also, it would be a million pound chance to do some more finnish treat eating and maybe some other national delicacies Jani couldn't send because reasons.
I LOVE that liquorice chocolate. It’s amazing with a glass of red wine! 🍷 😋
Not a fan of red wine, but I can imagine it works very well for those who are. I like to pair it with a mug of Lapsan Souchong tea.
Well done on the Sisu candy, Barry! I feel like you deserve Finnish citizenship for that one! :D
I used to love liquorice as a kid, always got them little liquorice wheels at halloween and hoarded them because no one else wanted them!
My mind goes right back to your Facebook video saying you might actually like some of the liquorice
Yeah, I deffo think it's something I can work at, deffo prefer it if I had to pick it over aniseed!
Just finished your stream! You legend :)
Barry, you're a real trouper to get through all that liquorice!
Suomi mainittu! 🇫🇮 🎉
Google Translated that to 'Finland mentioned?!' lol if that's right, then yep, Finland is very much mentioned!
@@mrbarrylewis Yes, it's correct!. When Finland is somehow mentioned, it needs to be commented. Also "Torilla tavataan!" is a thing to say. It's translated as "Let's meet at the marketplace!" in english.
@@mrbarrylewis We Finns get excited whenever someone mentions Finland. 😁
@@JefutusDangotus This exactly! 😂
torille perkele
You have just summoned all the Finns to your comment section
Respect for going back for the sisu. The "turkish pepper" is my favorite of all of these.
Pätkis the mint chocolate originated to Fazer upcycling mint chocolates that didn't pass the quality testing for proper premium finished look, so they were chopped up and pressed into small chocolate bars that were sold cheap. Until people really started to love the chocolate bars and they became their own thing. That's probably why you don't get any minty-filling per say because that'd had been in the original mint chocolates.
Great video, very funny reactions. Salmiakki has that nice invigorating feel to it. Like smelling salt effect to shock your senses a bit. We made salmiakki in school by combining chlorine and ammonia vapors (do not try at home and do not eat it). Two dangerous chemicals form a salt, so tasty.
Adore your vibe, keep staying you.
Hi Barry! Lol I find that those who like licorice would just love those snacks. I would love to try all the licorice from Finland, but I don't know anyone there to send me any. I feel for you trying them.
Haven’t finished the video yet, but I can’t resist to comment now already🫣😂 I absolutely love Tyrkisk Peber. Crash them, put them into chocolate biscuit dough and bake the biscuits. Delicious😋
I remember when Tyrkisk Peber was still made in Denmark. To Fazer's credit, they're still just as excellent as they were back then. Classic kid's candy.
The main reason for the Spelling
OooooO is this the new outside kitchen ? Looks great
We have Fazer in Denmark too, and it's really lovely. I'm not the biggest fan of the liquorice stuff myself, but I can make a bag of Dumle disappear like that!
Fazer is popular in all the Nordic countries
Fun fact: Pätkis was originally made from leftover chocolate and the name could somewhat refer to leftovers or leftover bits. I think that they invented a great way to use the leftovers to create a sellable product. Also the "iso" and "stor" simply means big in both Finnish and Swedish haha.
Dumle is originally from Sweden..(Fazer bought the brand in 1975) We eat tons and tons of the stuff just as the finns do. :)
Looks like your vid hit the finnish algo, was a worthy watch. :D One day you've eaten enough liqourice to start liking it >:)
If you crunch tyrkis peber to dust and add absolut vodka.. Chake it and stir it and let it set in the fridge for a few days you get a stonking good shot drink :) Its actually dangreously good
I definitely agree with you Barry! I'm from the U.S. and there's a lot of black licorice flavored things here, and I just couldn't adapt to liking it. It's a very overwhelming flavor, especially if you dont care for it in the first place. 😂
I love both of those crisps.
Love Tupla.
smells it then says "if it smells the way it tastes" thanks fr the great entertainment Bazza XD
Ahaha, the ammonium chloride (what the actual salmiakki "salt" part of salted liquorice is) is DEFINITELY an aquired taste! The flames on the Tyrkisk Peber bag denote the strength, and the black ones you got sent are the strongest possible flavour at 3 flames. There are some fruity 1 and 2 flame ones that just have a bit of a kick in the middle but are otherwise pretty sweet and mellow. I can demolish a whole bag of those within a day if I'm not careful, while the black ones usualy last me a whole week if not more :D
As for bright colours... we don't do artificial colourants in most, almost any, food, because they're unhealthy and unnecessary - and when it comes to chocolate, it's very hard to dye such a strong brown with something else, and chocolate is a required part of a flavoured _chocolate truffle_ filling :'D
And yet the level three is pretty mild compearing to "Svenskjävlar"
Dumle is so so good. Impossible to stop literally
tyrkish pepper is so good i love it and we even have licorice with chili as afilling where i live
"Tyrkisk peber" actually originates from denmark (est.1977) but was bought by fazer in the nineties.
Love your videos!
thanks
A norwegian licorice people wnjoy is kick. Its more sweet and it isnt salty. Same with licorice boat
1:36 Barry really loves the smell of the Finnish air... I wonder if that makes a difference to the initial smell as well. Clearly the air has been trapped in there from when it was packaged in Finland.
Dumle is actually originally from Sweden.
Salmiak (salmiakki) is one of the best things in the world! :D
your reactions are funny
I get like that in supermarkets abroad, I find International snacks like the bar that can be snapped really fascinating!
5:43 You can do that with the duo bars in the UK. It's what you're supposed to do.
Loads of fun😋
As a liquoricehating swede(yes I know I bring shame to my ancestors) I have found that the best way to eat liquorice is to find hard candy liquorice that has raspberryflavour mixed with the liquoriceflavour. It makes a world of difference, the sweet fruity flavour lowers the abrassivness of the liquorice while the liquorice in turn makes the fruitflavour not overbearingly sweet.
And to your contemporaries
Fazer (which I'm told is NOT pronounced like "phaser" but more like you would pronounce "seltzer") IMO makes the best chocolate in the world and Dumle are my favorites. Hard to come by here in Germany though. You really should let it melt in your mouth. The taste is out of this world (Marabou comes close and is found more often here - it's Mondelez' Swedish counterpart to Fazer).
Heh. When you made that face at the beginning I was thinking "Salmiakki?". Of course I was right. XD Can't stand it either. I once tasted one that nearly kicked it out of my socks because it was that salty.
This remindend me I forgot to compliment @mrbarrylewis on the pronunciation! Most English speakers say "Dum-el". 👍 Barry!
Fazer is superior to Marabou, real milk, no milk powder. Marabou is way to sweet, in fact I can't stand their products any more (I'm Swedish).
1:31 I guess you could say the one that escaped was nacho cheese ball!
You might wanna find your bitcoin details - today's value is 77,257.93GBP 👀😂
I love watching you try foreign snacks and the roller coaster journey your taste buds go on!
I honestly thought the 'sifu' packaging said something else (with a t instead of the i) and now I can't stop laughing 😂.
Oh, you love a rye crisp, do ya?
Tell me, what makes a crisp wry? Bit funny, innit.
Sorry... I learned it by watching you!
Also, Finnish stuff is nice in general, good shout. Cheers, Barry, take it easy, mun.
That's punny, right there.
They sell a lot of these in Estonia. I always stock up on Nacho Cheese Balls when I'm there.
Salmiakki, one assumes... :D Fun fact, Horna in the Sisu packaging means Hell. I seem to recall those were a bit too much for me, and I absolutely love salmiakki. The raspberry yoghurt bar does say Fazer on the top, it's just, the full name of the guy who started the whole enterprise back in the day, Karl Fazer.
Hello could you please review the kuvings yoghurt, cheese, pickle and vinegar maker as it looks amazing and I’m wondering if it’s possible to make kimchi with 🤔😁😁and I’ve learnt a lot from your videos 👍👍👍👍
oooh not seen that cheers, will have a look
Good timing as I just bought some Fazer chocolate today after a while since gingerbread one was on sale. This was a fun video, missed these. Pätkis is one of my favourite choco bars, think this was a pretty good set of choices
I LOVE the Salmiakki chocolate bar but I never see them in the stores anymore here in Sweden.
Finland, send some over please!
City Gross carries them; at least here in Tokholm.
Fazer online store do sell them for an example. Feel free to order from there.
Liquorice allsorts, the jelly tots are great
A tasting video? In THIS economy?!
lol i'm not sure how much the postage was but fair play to Jani for sending them in
Starting out strong with those ruffled crisps in the care package. A good ruffle hits just right...
As for the Taffel Hearts, they kind of remind me of Chex in terms of that waffley maizey texture. Which reminds me; be careful if any big green goopy fellas show up at your house. Flemoids tend to be troublesome unless you have a teleporter handy.
There is cardamom in those cinnamon bun oat bars, because cardamom is a must in Finnish buns (pulla)
I used to love liqourice as a kid but really went off it in my teens, for some reason.
Tyrkis peber is one of my favourit candys.
The finnish J in Jani is like Y in Yahoo.
Edit: Second try at 2:18 was actually perfect.
About that bar with the cinnamon, do you remember that cinnamon challenge ?
2:53 "if it smells the way it tastes" think u meant to say "if it tastes the way it smells" 😂😂
I was addicted to Strawbarry Licorice Nibs a few years ago. I ate a bag every night before bed. I stopped cold turkey when the price doubled and lost 50 lbs in less than a year.
Were winning you over slowly to licorice!
Fazer is almost always pronounced wrong by English speaking ppl! 🤭❤
I'll help you: 'z' is always pronounced separately as 't' + 's' in Finnish. So it's like two letters: "Fatser". 😊
Also the way you pronounce the letter 'a' would be written "ei" in Finnish... 🤭 So no: it's 'a', not "ei". 😄❤
You can put the word in Google Translate and then listen how it is pronounced in Finnish. 🤗❤️
We dont use powder in our chocolates, we use fresh milk.
I have lived in Finland for 50 years and cant eat the salt licoriceat all, but the chocolatr is phenonomel
I'm with you on the Salmaki - I love licorice, but hate it salted. Luckily, many, many people do like it. If we all liked the same things, then it's possible that there wouldn't be enough to go around.
Xylitol is an artificial sweetener (I'm very allergic to it, like most artificial sweeteners), which can aid dental hygiene, but, if consumed in largish amounts, can be quite laxative. 🤔😆😆😆
Pass the licorice on to Stuart - he loves it.
Xylitol occurs naturally in small amounts in plums, strawberries, cauliflower, and pumpkin. Human body also produces some grams every day on its own. So it's not artificial in that sense, although it's produced at industrial scale from plants that contain xylan.
Liquorice is laxative too!
21:26 Ritter Sport makes a bar with a strawberry yogurt filling, if I recall correctly. If this bar is anything like that, I'd DEMOLISH it.
It would be nice if you do these on a regular basis, treats from around the world.
Finland mentioned, lets meet at the marketplace!
Sisu candies are often used as cough drops
If that Fazerina had salted caramel ADDED to it (so orange truffle, salted caramel, milk chocolate enveloping it)... I'd be in heaven... broke heaven but still
I have eaten like 2-3 bags of Tyrkisk Peber these last two weeks 😅
Watching this makes me wonder if Lakrids by Bülow can make you like liqurice. They have this whole «share it with a liqurice hater» campaign 😅
23:30 are those look a bit like fisherman's friends or Victory Vs
As an 🇦🇽 (🇸🇪/🇫🇮), I'll confirm that Fazer (Fah-T'zer) is THAT prevalent! They also make lots of baked goods (among them, the IMO best cookies in the world: Doris). and any trip down a 🇫🇮 candy or cookie aisle will be about 50% Fazer.
It's funny how 🇸🇪 is the land of Fika, but 🇫🇮 are the ones with the biggest assortment of Fika-appropriate noms.
🇫🇮 used to be the king of an originally Russian sweet called Kinuski (caramel/fudge), but something like two decades ago, they just stopped, for some reason. 🤷♂
🇸🇪 goes nuts for liquorice too (anyone who does a 🇸🇪 box for Barry commits a crime if they don't include Djungelvrål), but 🇫🇮 top'em by about five times over.
And here's my pushing-up-my-glasses-and-saying-well-actually moment:
Salmiak ≠ Liquorice. It's a salt (ammonium chloride). Most commonly used in "food" to make liquorice salty, but there are salty liquorice without it, and it's not solely for liquorice.
Back in the days when I was a kid, they used to sell these plastic test tubes with salmiakki powder in the candy aisles on 🇦🇽. I used to clean out the whole inventory and "deal" it at school in 🇸🇪. Good times.
Also, to anyone making a 🇸🇪 box for Barry: Make sure to get ALL the different Marabou bars; probably best to go with the mini sized ones, or the box will weigh more than an elephant.
Fazer is even more popular in Sweden too now with the Mondelez/Marabou buissness in Putins Russia. For christmas i bought the Fazer Favorite box instead of the Marabou Aladdin or paradis.
9:45 I know it's not a good dog trait (breeding wise). But I cannot help that tongue hanging out funny
Sidenote / True test: Salmiak. Even contested in the Netherlands where most people like Licorice.
Barry I think you’re getting fondant or cream mixed up with truffle, truffles should never be orange or any other colour, fondants and cream fillings both often have a colour
Yup good stuff, I can confirm :)
What is it with always giving the Tyrkisk Peber bag and never the Salmiakki Mix bag for people not accustomed to salmiakki?
