    Welcome back! I love the X-Pro 3. I ordered one after reading Jonas Rask’s great article about it. I have the XT-3 as well and I view the two cameras as beautiful tools designed for different purposes, or for different shooting styles. The hidden LCD works for me, as does the e-ink display on the back. The lack of an in-your-face LCD reminds me of shooting analog, and in particular with the Leica MP and M7. It’s freeing not to have the LCD tempting you to look at the camera instead of at what is before you. Also, the body fits perfectly in my hand and, to me, reflects a high level of artistic industrial design. I think the flip-down screen is also brilliant for low or waist level shooting, especially since the bottom hinge means the view is unobstructed by the viewfinder. The restriction regarding tripod use does not bother me, since I view the XT-3 as a more all-around workhorse, including using it for landscapes and other work where a tripod is needed. To me, the X-Pro 3 is more about walking around, camera in hand, and photographing what you happen to come across. I applaud Fujifilm for taking the path less traveled, producing a unique camera that a relatively small audience will love. I also greatly enjoy Jonas Rask’s product shots. I wonder how many cameras and lenses have been sold based on customers reacting to those product shots!.

    Very insightful video. The X-Pro3 is not for everybody. That's just one more reason why it suit me.
    More specifically, the rear display is a great feature for the reasons you describe, but also because it expands the information available on camera settings BEFORE the camera is even turned on. By choosing the "classic" format for the rear display, I can know which custom setting is selected before the camera is turned on. That's because each of my custom settings is based on a different film simulation (Provia, Astia, Classic chrome, Pro Neg std, Classic negative classic, Acros red, Acros green). I can therefore also indirectly SCROLL through the list of these custom settings after pressing my "custom settings" button, once the camera is turned on. Of course, once a custom setting has been selected, I can also quickly and stealthily change the film simulation within that profile after pressing my "film sim" button. This is very visual, intuitive, quick and stealthy way to change how my JPEGs images will look. I shoot Raw+JPEG and use the JPEGs 98% of the time.

    I'm an X-Pro-2 shooter and I communicate regularly with other's. Most of us have tried an X-Pro-3 and, so far, none of us have purchased one or plan to. As far as we can tell they added more quirks (sorry but that LCD is a terrible design and execution) and didn't address issues like IBIS or an improved battery, tangible items that would have been real improvements. I am very frustrated by Fuji right now and wanted to want this camera, but I don't. For me right now I'm sticking with the X-Pro-2. It's doing the job well enough and I'm much too invested in the system (4 lenses) to jump ship... for now. The things you mention are minor at best and sound like nothing more than an attempt to put a positive spin on a very poorly designed camera.

      Seating in same boat (with 9 lenses and two body's).The rear screen is no issue for me ( on my both xpro's is turned off anyway) but stripping OVF and making it unusable for wide angle lenses or anything longer then 56mm is deal breaker.At current price no thank you Fuji, I have no desire to go for degraded OVF option for more money. To be honest xpro-3 should not cost more then $1500.

    I'm so glad I bought the x-pro 3 over the x100v. I love the flip screen because i can use it to shoot waist level like how i shoot using my 500cm hasselblad. I also love that its film focused. I love that the experience i get from using analog is kinda the same and respects the old school experience but at the same time the conveniences of new tech is there like usb c (i carry a power bank), automatic transfer to mobile phone, etc. I dont even have a huge memory card in the camera because its all stored raw on my samsung phone that's 512gb.

    I don't understand the hate for the screen to be hounest. Most of the time (99%) shooting with the viewfinder makes more sense since the backscreen reflects basically just about everything. The only time I can see it as a problem is when someone would use a tripod. But I'm sure with some acra plate a work around might be possible. The only reason I didn't get one is the price. Other then that, it is just a rediculously beautifull piece of amazing machinery!

    I have 25 years of photography experience, started at my 15th, from 35mm went through medium format and large format panoramic analogue phorography, velvia provia was my daily diary.
    Being able to try to capture that once vivid bright emulsion of Fuji colors in a handy small convenient box that is reliable, puts the photographer again at maximum creativity.
    I'm a right-eye shooter but nevertheless I prefer LCD closed and all attention going to the composition of the subject through the OVF / EVF.

    I had hoped that the X-Pro3 would introduce16mm framelines. Instead they removed the 18mm framelines! I don't mind about the hidden screen (I almost never use the LCD), and I could live without the D-pad (grudgingly), but it's a shame that they made the optical viewfinder less flexible than on the X-Pro2 and X-Pro1.

    Well, as I'm currently using an X-T3 for video work, and sometimes photography, I can clearly remember many situations where I wished I had such a simple tilt screen as there is on the X-Pro3 (for low angle shooting).
    The good protection this layout offers allows for a bigger screen too.

    I agree with you. March 2022 I received mine with a couple of lenses. So far, I am loving it. I'm also a left eye shooter and I learned on manual cameras shooting Fuji Velvia. This brings back "real" photography for me. And, as a bonus, I'm training my right eye to see. As a pretty devoted Sony guy I can't complain about this camera. It brings back the joy of just seeing. I would recommend it to anyone who loves taking pictures. On a side note, I recently took out my now ancient Sony alpha 900 DSLR. Wow. That's what prompted me to get the Fuji X-Pro3. Seeing through the lens makes a big difference for me. I feel very fortunate to have both these cameras. // alex

  • @msandersen
    @msandersen 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I don’t know if anyone has mentioned the leftie issue with this particular camera,,but I have seen reviewers knock the Sony a6000 series for that very issue, as the reviewer was left-eye dominant. I’ve thought about whether it was an issue for the X-Pro line before, I guess another reason most stick with the SLR-like middle position, even when they don’t have to anymore. Good point about there being no screen to smudge with your nose (apart from subscreen), a bigger eye cup might have helped that, perhaps detachable and replaceable rubber one.
    I think I read somewhere the x-pro 3 still does the annoying thing of turning off the screen with a proximity sensor, eg your finger touching the screen, a camera strap, whatever. I had hoped with the screen design, that was off or designed differently. Maybe not an issue unlike the other xt cameras.

    Hey Palle, This is the first time I have seen one of your videos and I really enjoyed the way you just explained why you are so passionate about the X-Pro 3. (Subscribed).
    I had to write because its hard to imagine the negativity about this camera design, from reading the many comments here. What is so great about the camera world today is how much variety there is available. So we can choose what really suits us and use it to develop our own style and expression. We have unbelievably good smartphone cameras, Foveon sensors, Petzval style lenses and we can adapt vintage or even CCTV lenses to our digital cameras. Etc., etc...
    I like that Fuji engineers approached the X-Pro 3 design from an alternative perspective, with the aim of switching the emphasis from the LCD onto the viewfinder. I can’t wait to get my own X-Pro 3 and I hope it works for me as much as it does for you. But if it doesn’t I shall simply sell it on and I’ll still be grateful to Fuji for presenting us with choice and the option to think different.

    I bought one of these a few weeks ago. I feel like the rear screen fiasco was a mistake on Fujifilm's part but the camera is so strong in every other way that I will continue to use and enjoy it. I don't want to go back to my Xpro 2 or XT3, which I have if needed. Honestly if you're depending on the rear screen that much you should probably have bought something else. I use it half-folded for low shots often and it's wonderful for that. You can even use it upside down for high shots and it's better that way, too. It's like using a Rolleiflex.
    I strongly disagree with this replacing film camera shooting. To each his own, obviously. The titanium is lovely, especially in dura flavors. The only other negative I can think for this camera is you can't assign a custom button to begin/end video shooting. That's it. Everything else is strongly positive. It's a lovely camera.

    About eye dominance: most men are right eye dominant, ratio about 4:1, same as “handedness”. A high proportion of women have no eye dominance at all and can use either eye equally. A small percentage of men are the same with no eye dominance. I am left handed, left eye dominant yet I use my right eye when using a rangefinder camera because I also keep my left eye open to see what is around me. I dont think that eye dominance is an issue for most photographers at all. Fuji could easily have reversed the layout of the camera and put the viewfinder on the right end if they wanted to, but since Leica cameras have it on the left, they did too.

    Great video - agree fully. Took me out of the Leica “want” space...this is amazing. Might only add lenses now and perhaps a GFX.... only need more resolution but supposedly sony now has a 43megapixel app-s sensor..... Only miss for me is only one mag factor in the OVF. Great video. Thank you!

    Thanks for talking about a couple of things nobody mentions. I am a hobbyist and probably should not buy a camera this expensive, but the heart wants what the heart wants so I'll probably end up doing the investment. Just sometimes not sure if I should get an XT3 or XT4 as the price tag is lower... 2K vs 1.5-1.7K just seems stupid but man that 2K camera looks so damn sexy...

    Your pared back approach to this video makes it stand out from all the other X-Pro 3 reviews that I've watched. It feels more honest, and coming from an actual film-shooter. Everybody else's seems like it's coming from a camera reviewer. Thanks for this video. Now, I feel like I know who this camera is really for. =)

    I’m also a left eye shooter for the last 3 years. As I’ve lost my sight in my right eye. So I get the nose on the screen issue. I’ll have to wait a few years until I can afford this though. I love the idea of not using a screen all the time personally

    This was one of the first things I noticed about this camera. I use a D300 still and the amount of times I have to wipe the LCD screen is too much for my taste. I tend to just shoot and review images once I put them on the cpu.

    Range finder style bodies aren't for left eye shooters, it's not new to the XP3. I used to be a left eye shooter, but I trained myself to use my right eye when I started to use RF style bodies - now it seems natural for me to use my right eye, I don't even think about it.

    I love all your videos. I have a question for you…hoping you’ll answer. After falling in love with the X100V, I’m seriously considering trading in my XT3 for an XPRO 3. I shoot portraits and headshots professionally. Do you think I’d be losing anything going from the XT3 to the XPRO 3?

    • @just_A_Hack
      @just_A_Hack ปีที่แล้ว

      if this is still applicable, I would really imagine that the only thing you might be losing is extreme portability. From my understanding, the x-t3 and pro3 are larger cameras. However, you get many more options in terms of lens choice.

    Fuji makes an awesome camera with inward facing LCD......'everyone' has a hissy fit........>>> BUT.... 20+ Billion dollar $$$$$$$ companies that made BILLIONS and BILLIONS of cell phones with INWARD FACING LCD screens , aka "flip phones"......... nobody complains, everyone loves it.

    • @TaipeiGeek
      @TaipeiGeek 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      There's a reason why nobody is making flip phones right now. There's a better design that prevailed. Fuji is going back just to be different. They hamper the usability just to be cool and even charge a premium for that turd. You have to be an absolute Fuji nut to defend that.

You think that providing consumers with an alternative is a "turd" idea? As for the cost... with the hybrid viewfinder, Japanese build, and one-of-a-kind design IQ, you're nuts if you think it's overpriced. Shit I'm a Fuji fanboy... when did that happen?

    I love this camera. I prefer the rangefinder style with Fuji cameras. But I just bought the X-T3 because I could get it for halve the price...
    Therefore I would have liked if the the X-Pro3 didn't have the hybrid viewfinder. So that the camera has the same price as the X-T3.
    I like the display solution. Because I use the display mostly for settings I would have liked a bit more functionality for the subscreen. At least there should have been a button to enlight it... The ISO wheel is awkward, but no problem, because I like Auto-ISO.
