Retaining rings are used to retain a variety of objects in place; this retainment typically occurs in an axial direction (e.g. retaining a ball bearing in a bore). There are internal and external styles of retaining rings, meaning they can be installed on the outside of a shaft or on the inside of a bore (hole). There are a few types of retaining rings: arguably the most typical are the “e-clip” style and the standard style. The e-clip type can only be applied externally, while the standard type can be applied either internally or externally. The standard type requires a special tool to install or remove, while the e-clip style can be installed or removed with a variety of common shop tools, like a flat head screwdriver.
